Nearly wild woodland camping in Dorset

Bridgewood Camping offers pitches in a Dorset woodland between the beautiful town of Sherborne and the historic village of Cerne Abbas. But these are not just any pitches – they’re wild ones – or very nearly wild anyway. Your Hipcamp hosts, Sarah and Paul, are very happy for you to stay in their six-acre wood and have smoothed away the very roughest edges by providing rustic facilities. Overall, though, there’s no denying that this is camping for those who want to get off grid and close to nature. It’s tents only with bivvies and hammock campers more than welcome too.

If you like the sound of all that but lack a tent, The Woodland Cabin could be for you. It’s a rustic hideaway which is off grid like the rest of the campsite but has its own eco en-suite. By that we mean a compost loo and a gas-powered shower with a limited water supply. There are beds (but no bedding), seating, a camping stove and a log burner too. Outside you have a fire pit and a picnic bench. It’s in its own area of the woods, like each of the six camping pitches – which are well spaced apart. These share two compost loos and two shower cubicles. There’s no water supply to the woods, so if you want to use them, you need to collect a solar shower bag from the field where they’ll have warmed up in the sun. It’s also where you’ll find the water tap and Sarah and Paul’s pigs, chicken and bees.

For a taste of their homemade produce, head for the horsebox trailer. Inside, you can buy eggs, honey and logs for your fire and find out about the area too. An OS map details the local footpaths. Use them for a walk through the wider woodland or to navigate to the local pub. The closest shop and a lovely tea room can be found five miles down the road at Cerne Abbas – famous for the huge chalk outline of the Cerne Abbas Giant on a nearby hillside. It’s a great place for a walk. In the other direction from the site it’s seven miles to lovely Sherborne town.

The Woodland Cabin
Gorgeous spot in beautiful woodland
What an amazing, little gem of a place! Stayed here with my husband and our little girl, for his birthday. It felt glorious to switch off from everything for a few days. The hut is so well equipped, we had everything we needed. We braved the walk to to the pub through the woods, which is easy once you know where you’re going 😂 beautiful woodland, with lots of space for everyone. Do be cautious of ticks though (managed to catch one on my daughter before it had attached). All in all, a gorgeous spot - felt very lucky to find it at short notice 😁

Bridgewood Tent Pitch
We loved our stay at Sarah's site, the location is beautiful and the amenities were perfect. She provided everything we needed to feel off-the-grid and still very comfortable! Sarah was very accomodating, and the pitch was secluded and quiet.

Bridgewood Camping
This campsite is lovely, the pitches are nice and the ground is super soft, so pitching a tent is super easy. The showers and bathroom are eco, so there is no plumbing at all. You have showers in water heated by bags left in the sun. The toilets are compostable too. So make sure you are okay with this. There is a pub within walking distance which is nice!

The Woodland Cabin
We loved the cabin in the woods as it was so relaxing and very calm to sit outside and listen to the birds in the forest, and Sarah and Paul were so helpful with any concerns & questions that we had, definitely somewhere we will look to return to :)

We have 6 acres of woodland with pitches spaced out, some can become adjoining pitches for friends wanting to pitch close. You can nestle in the trees with a hammock, bivy or tent. Have a firepit and surround yourself in nature. Just off a main road means you can venture to town or endless countryside. Pitch... (2 Adults, 1 tent, 1 Car)... £30.00/night Additional Adult (17yrs+) .......... £15.00/night Additional Young Person (2-16yrs) ... £10.00/night Additional Young Person (0-1yr) ... £5.00/night *well be-haved, leashed Dogs ... £10.00/night Additional CAR .... £5.00 Each pitch has concrete slabs for firepit siting. Free use of 1 firepit per pitch when purchasing logs/kindling from us. Log trug £5.00 and kindling £1.50 per bundle. WE DO NOT ALLOW WOOD OR KINDLING FROM OTHER SOURCES TO BE BROUGHT OR USED IN OUR WOODLAND - because of the risk of disease or pests being introduced into our environment from an unknown source may harm/kill or be detrimental to our Ancient Woodland. We provide rubbish bins, trolleys for you to convey your equipment to our designated pitches, loo roll in our loo huts, sun (solar) heated shower bags, mains water stand pipe and the fresh air in which to unwind. Our aim is to provide somewhere rather than a traditional field for camping, with as much as possible to spend time OFF-GRID and promote a 'LEAVE NO TRACE' ethos! If you want a quiet break with time for reflection, flora and fauna, wildlife and an appreciation of your surroundings our woodland is for you, however, if you prefer modern day luxuries and are put off by slightly inclement weather carefully consider all the above! We will aim to help where we can and very much look forward to Welcoming you for your stay. Thank you.
Nearby attractions

The campsite in which the woodland is situated connects to a wider woodland and there are public footpaths which you can use to explore further. The site is at the top of the Dorset National Landscape and there are plenty of other options for walking within it – including the Hardy Way, the Wessex Ridgeway and routes to see the chalk outline of the Cerne Abbas Giant starting from Cerne Abbas village (five miles). The town of Sherborne (seven miles) is home to Sherborne Abbey and two castles: the ruins of Sherborne Old Castle, open to the public via English Heritage, and the “new” Sherborne Castle and Gardens built as recently as 1594 by Sir Walter Raleigh. Dorchester is 11 miles away and has some good museums, ideal for rainy days, and the Dorset coast is just over half an hour’s drive. Weymouth (21 miles) is a good option for a swim or paddle in the sea.

Food and drink

If you’re lucky, you may be able to pick up some Bridgewood honey or eggs from the horsebox trailer shop. For more than that, head into Cerne Abbas (five miles) where there’s a well-stocked village shop. The village also has a choice of pubs but the closest pub to site is only about half a mile from site, Hunter’s Moon, an 18th-century Dorset inn which serves food. You can walk there on local footpaths in 15 minutes or along the road in less than 10 – but do be careful and take a torch if you go at night as it is an A road with a 40-mph speed limit. More independent shops, supermarkets and eateries are available in Sherborne (seven miles) or Dorchester (11 miles).
