An off-grid shepherd’s hut site out on Bodmin Moor

It’s not often you get to stay in the heart of a National Landscape, within a Site of Special Scientific Interest, or on a Dark Sky Reserve, but Diddylake is in the middle of all three. The site consists of two handbuilt shepherd’s huts situated by the ruined Diddylake House on Cornwall’s Bodmin Moor. It feels a world away from just about anything and is all yours for the duration of your stay.

This is a solo-hire site and both huts are for you. One is your bedroom with a wood-burning stove and thick blankets keeping it cosy in any weather. The other is your kitchen with hobs and a dining table plus a barbecue and fire pit just outside. A shower and compost loo are in their own wood-and-wavy-tin hut down by the old house. The whole site is off grid and has been put together by host Jackson with recycled finds and local timber, giving the spaces a homely, timeless feel and excellent eco-friendly credentials. There might be a chilly stroll to the loo or a dash between the huts here and there, but it all gives you a sense of living in a different age and in a real wilderness.

Jackson’s home, the farmhouse, is a few hundred metres away, and doesn’t intrude on you at all, but it’s still close enough that you can wander up for assistance or to visit the cows he keeps. Beyond that, you have the whole of Bodmin Moor on your doorstep and the coast within easy reach. You can split your days between rambling in the hills and surfing from Cornwall’s beaches; generally enjoying the great outdoors. You’re certainly in touch with that here. Even lounging at the huts, you’ll not want for wildlife encounters. Birds include red kites, buzzards, swallows and skylarks to mention just a few. Listen carefully and you could hear a cuckoo. Deer and fox are frequent visitors and if you keep your eyes peeled you might see butterflies, dragonflies, newts and frogs. A camera comes in handy out here where there’s more wildlife than people and at night, that seclusion is brought home further by spectacular starry skies.

Two handcrafted shepherd huts in a very private, tranquil location on Bodmin Moor. The huts are off grid and have a low environmental impact. We're 3.5 miles away from the picturesque village of St Neot and 8 miles away from the historic market town of Liskeard. The North and South coasts are easily accessible offering some of the best surfing, swimming and cliff walks. The huts are cosy and homely with logburner and comfortable bed! The spring fed hot/cold shower is next to a compost loo.

Diddylake Shepherd Huts
Amazing spot. Be prepared for bumpy road to get to the shepherd huts, our little city car just about managed so be fine for bigger cars. We loved the off-grid living and the beautiful put together spaces in a calm and revitalising setting. Would definitely recommend!

Diddylake Shepherd Huts
What a lovely stay in what felt like the middle of nowhere. The outdoor space was lovely to spend the day taking it slow and the bedroom hut was nice and cosy in the evenings with the fire roaring. There was electric to charge things, but everything else was off grid. The decor was so cosy and well thought out and it was so lovely talking to Jackson’s Mum who was so welcoming. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

Nearby attractions

Diddylake Shepherd’s Huts are within the granite moorland of Bodmin Moor where there’s much open-access land you can explore. If you want to scale one of its characteristic tors, head for Brown Gelly, four miles from site. It’s a similar distance to Golitha Falls, another nice place for a walk. Carnglaze Caverns are former slate mines which are now open as a tourist attraction (three miles). Cornwall’s largest body of inland water, Colliford Lake, is four miles away with a water’s edge walkway while Siblyback Lake (six miles) is the place to head for if you want to paddleboard or kayak, with hire options available. Jamaica Inn, the pub made famous by Daphne du Maurier, is seven miles from the shepherd’s huts and has a small Smuggler’s Museum next to the pub. The south coast is about 12 miles from the site with the coastal town of Looe one of the closest places to visit. The north coast takes a bot longer to reach but is still do-able in a day trip. Tintagel is 26 miles, Crackington Haven and Newquay both under 30 miles away – all about 45 minutes’ drive.

Food and drink

St Neot is the closest village to Diddylake, just over three miles away. There’s a small community-run village shop and a pub that does food, The London Inn. Its menu of pub grub uses West Country produce wherever possible. A bit further afield, but worth the visit is the atmospheric old smuggler’s haunt, Jamaica Inn, made famous by the Daphne du Maurier novel of the same name. If you want more produce than the local shop can provide, the town of Liskeard has more shops and is eight miles from site.
