There’s a good chance once you’ve found this removed farmland glamping site, you’ll never want to leave. Nestled amongst some of the most glorious countryside in south-west England, The Orchard Retreat offers three locally-handcrafted yurts – Bramley, Pippin and Russet (named after the surrounding apple trees); each dotted on a sloping four acre orchard, surrounded by fields, streams and pretty ponds. So why not swing over to Devon for a detox from the digital world?
Each dwelling comes furnished in a stylish and romantic way – from the stable doors, comprised of a mixture of ash, chestnut and hazel, to the wood-burning stove and warm rugs, guests can envelop themselves in a truly luxurious camping experience. This family run business is clearly a labour of love for owners Nick and Vicky, who understand that creating a memorable glampsite takes more than just plonking some yurts in a field. The ‘Facilities Lodge’ is testament to that. Follow the path lit by solar lanterns and you will find a private bathroom complete with shower, sink and flushing loo. There’s also a shared kitchen area for cooking, however most take advantage of their own BBQ and picnic table – perfect for a spot of al fresco dining at sunset.
And as for offsite activities? Thankfully nature has laid on a smorgasbord of adventures for you to savour. Bring a bike and explore the tranquil Grand Western Canal Cycle Route, which runs through the heart of Devon. Often along the towpath, this flat and mainly off-road route is ideal for families with children, offering sweeping landscape views, varying between sheltered woodlands and the lofty plateaus of the Blackdown Hills. But it’s not all about the great outdoors; the lively market towns of Tiverton and Crediton are both just a 15 minute drive away. The former was once a prime industrial centre and samples of local lace can be seen at the award-winning Tiverton Museum, whilst Crediton is best known for St. Boniface Church and boasts one of the country's finest farmers' markets.
Whether you want to wander through enchanted woods, play in streams, or simply escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, guests are free to revel at this sizeable slice of glamping perfection. “Off-grid living at its very best” is how Nick and Vicky describe a stay at The Orchard Retreat. And as you unwind outside your secluded, homely yurt, tucking into some tasty local produce and savouring those delightful countryside views, you can’t help but think that's a fair assessment.
