Glamping near the English Riviera, with wood-fired hot tubs and coarse fishing lakes

When we tell you that Rocombe Valley Retreat is equipped with five wood-fired hot tubs and that each is filled with the site's own spring water, chances are that this Devonshire glamping site has already secured your attention. Everyone loves a good hot tub — particularly the site's previous guests, who raved about them so much that its hosts bought more to ensure that supply met demand. So now everyone who visits this spot in the countryside gets a chance for some R&R in the water, whether you're retreating here for a secluded break in its easy-going glamping accommodation, want to explore the nearby beaches, or you're seeking a fishing holiday where you make the most of its beautiful adjacent lakes.

Rocombe Valley Retreat has most glamping options covered. Whereas other sites will typically consist of bell tents or shepherds huts or yurts, Rocombe has decided to include all of them, along with a custom-built safari tent and a cosy gypsy caravan. Each is well-equipped with supplied bedding, cooking equipment and woodburning stoves utilising wood chopped from the farm's trees.

And speaking of the farm — expect to see wildlife here that you wouldn't clap eyes on in the city, with its three natural spring-fed ponds providing a natural haven for kingfishers, Canadian geese and the like, and you may also spot bullfinches and buzzards, tawny and barn owls in the surrounding trees. The ponds have been stocked with coarse fish, so bring your fishing license and rod with you to catch a bite or two, while looking out for rabbits, badgers and foxes in the surrounding fields and farmland.

For days off-site, you're ideally positioned within reach of the English Riviera. Torquay's Torre Abbey Sands is a short drive away, as is the stunning, secluded Anstey's Cove and the quintessentially British seaside of Paignton Sands, with its crazy golf and donkey rides. And Devon's countryside really is at your fingertips here — that is, if you can be convinced to leave your hot tub.

Shepherd's Hut
Shepards hut
Booked the shepherds hut for a birthday weekend. We pre requested the hot tub (there was a pricing discrepancy which was cleared up) When we arrived we managed to find our way to the hut, called using the number found in the welcome folder then settled in. The pre booked hot tub message wasn’t passed on and wasn’t pre warmed so it took a good few hours before we could get in. Paul was very welcoming and gave us some good tips on where to go for food and the beach. There’s only three toilets and showers on the site between the 5 units. The hut was nice, clean and the bed was comfortable and had full kitchen utensils a available. Things I would say would be handy to add imo: - Pegs to hang a towel on for the hot tub. - site map to help locate the toilets etc - pre provide the contact numbers to reach for check in - more than one peg in the shower block Other than that was a cute stay and the Shepard hit was nice and tucked away with bushes around for peaceful romantic get away

Large Yurt
Had a fabulous long weekend in this gorgeous campsite. Out yurt was spacious and well equipped. We mastered the wood burner and the nights were coasts despite cold clear nights. We were very lucky with the weather, glorious spring sunshine and we enjoyed trips to Ness Cove and Meadingcombe. Had a fabulous meal at the Wild Goose and fish and chips in Torquay. We god the hot tub going and our gang of teenagers loved it. Elliot was a great host. We loved it, gorgeous Devon countryside, the joys of roasting marshmallows without the hassle of camping.

Shepherd's Hut
A great getaway weekend for my partner's birthday! Had everything you needed from gas cooker, utensils etc., and of course the hot tub situated right outside. A secluded spot with sheep, carp and owls for company and a short walk to the coast and the lovely nearby village pub. Friendly welcoming hosts, and we would certainly love to visit again!

The perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. We are nestled amongst rolling Devonshire Countryside just outside Torquay, but we could be 1000 miles away… Glamping in Devon – get the best of both worlds. We manage a small, peaceful site with a cosy Shepherds Hut and beautiful Yurts and a fantastic Safari Tent set in an idyllic rural location beside a brook and 3 lakes, 2 of which offer great sport for coarse fishing. We fill all five of our onsite hot tubs with our own spring water. The valley and surrounding hills have a network of lanes and tracks making it ideal countryside for walking and mountain biking – or just take a stroll to one of the many country pubs around. Wander over to watch the chickens scratch about, or see the carp feed and bask in the sun – you may even see one of the otters that live in our stream, catch a buzzard circling overhead, or a Jay flash past… Due to the popularity of our hot tubs we have added two more to the site. You have uninterrupted views of the rolling hills and can hear the nature all around, but still have the privacy of being tucked away at the rear of our beautiful plot. We are a couple of miles from the sea with beautiful coastal walks and quiet sheltered beaches and yet just 30 minutes drive away from Dartmoor. Our Shepherds Hut is available all year round, so when the seasons have changed you can still snuggle down in one of our little hideaways. Once the sun pokes its head out from behind the clouds (which it does here more than any other place in the UK remember – we are the English Riviera!) you are in a perfect place to take advantage of everything that beautiful South Devon has to offer… Or you may just prefer to lounge around the camp and watch Nature unfold around you… *Please note, hot tubs are an additional charge. Contact us for more info.
Nearby attractions

If you’re into fishing, you needn’t go anywhere for entertainment as there are two spring-fed and well-stocked ponds on site. Glamping guests can fish them for free (though a rod licence is required). Off-site, all the attractions of the English Riviera are within easy reach. Torquay is closest (five miles) with Paignton and Brixham a little further around the bay. Teignmouth and Newton Abbot are both within five miles of the site and Totnes (10 miles) and Dartmouth are within easy visiting distance too (24 miles). Of course, this means there are plenty of beaches, boat rides and the usual seaside attractions. There’s also adrenaline-fuelled adventure with Rock Solid Coasteering (07723 088292). Family-friendly attractions in the area include Babbacombe Model Village (01803 315315) just a couple of miles down the road, Paignton Zoo (01803 697500) and Woodlands Family Theme Park on the edge of Totnes (01803 712598). Kents Cavern prehistoric caves (01803 215136) are just 13 miles from the site, and for grown-ups, there are tours and tastings at the Old Walls Vineyard (01626 770877) six miles away.

Food and drink

The Church House Inn (01626 872475) is the closest pub, just a mile down the road in Stokeinteignhead with a menu that’s highly recommended. The village also has a community shop where you can pick up all the basics. For more shops and places to eat out, head to the bigger village of Shaldon, three miles up the road where The Clipper Cafe (01626 873747), The Ode Cafe (01626 873427) and The Ness (01626 873480) are all good options. For local ales, try The Railway Brew House (01626 354166), in Newton Abbot or the Wild Goose (01626 872241) in Combeinteignhead.
