A yurt, a gypsy wagon, and wild camping pitches in a Devon valley.

Campsite Aldridge Mill is deep in the Devon countryside and offers a taste of a wild Nomadic life to anyone who’s passing through. There are camping pitches for people with their own tent or van, and there’s a yurt and a bow-top gypsy wagon too. But please don’t call these options glamping. Your hosts are keen to point out that what you get here are not stays in purpose-built accommodation but the opportunity for an off-grid holiday in an authentic Mongolian yurt and a genuine gypsy wagon. Both have character and history that you can’t erase or replicate. And the same could be said for the land they sit in. This peaceful site is situated among the untamed meadows, streams, and woodland of an ancient Devonshire valley, a few miles south of Exmoor.

The yurt was, in fact, once lived in by your hosts so it is homely and exceptionally well equipped. It has a log burner and a kitchenette, as well as a double bed and double futon too. It’s suitable for up to four and sits in its own meadow, with a private compost loo and green valley views, among the 40-plus acres belonging to Aldridge Mill. Likewise the gypsy wagon, which sleeps two. It's also located in its own space with its own loo and views. Elsewhere within the land is the wild camping field. Here, only a handful of campers are allowed at a time – perhaps three or four tents or vans. There are a couple of compost loos but little else by way of facilities. If you want to wash or wash-up, you do so in the stream (strictly eco-friendly products only), your water is filtered from a well and the lighting (at the yurt and wagon) is powered by the sun.

In many aspects this is as close to wild camping as you can get which won’t suit campers who are used to manicured sites – but those who see beauty in long grass and notice stars on dark nights will probably love it here. You can use the place as a launchpad to explore Exmoor National Park and further afield in Devon or simply stay local to enjoy what’s close by. The campsite is situated between the villages of Oakford and Stoodleigh which each have a pub that does food. The towns of Bampton, Tiverton and Dulverton are all within 10 miles.

First rate stay. Highly recommended
We had the best time in this little caravan. Perfect size for the two of us and it was excellently stocked with everything we needed. Fresh water was just at the bottom of the hill and the compost loo was a nice touch. Beautiful view of the valley and very peaceful. Directions were clear and hosts were available for help and advice whenever we needed. Highly, highly recommend. Will absolutely be back, thanks so much!!

Yurt with stunning views
After our campervan let us down we had to find "glamping" style alternatives, but we like low-key, alternative vibes and the Yurt couldn't have been more that! Welcoming and helpful hosts who responded to our small requests but weren't actually anywhere to be seen otherwise - a wild camping, off-grid dream. Other than a couple of bikes and cars whizzing by at after work time, you feel like you're in the middle of nowhere. Thanks for having us!

What a fantastic weekend!
An outstandingly beautiful camp spot. Could not recommend Aldridge Mill enough. The children paddled in the stream the whole weekend, we enjoyed a walk into the woods and the sound of the birds in the mornings. Just utterly perfect. Thank you so much

Beautiful secluded wood and valley
Beautiful secluded spot with river, small water meadow and a large wood on a hill with incredible species diversity. Weirdly, for such a secluded place I got 4G reception. Soon switched it off though :) This is a true gem for almost-wild camping. Loo and drinking water, a flat pitch (in the main field) and a firepit: perfect. Decided not to wash or wash up as the cows from the field on the opposite bank were in the stream and I was travelling with someone in their 70s :) We went hacking on the moor at West Anstey Riding Stables after our stay. Highly recommended.

Aldridge Mill is an old working mill that finished grinding corn in the 1930’s. It is nestled deep in a sheltered valley accessed by windy lanes from the A361 which travels across the top of mid Devon. We are very blessed by the nature surrounding us. It is timeless and untouched, full of the beauty and charm of England. The valley is heavily wooded and criss crossed by waterways, with walks for every level of adventure and plenty of hidden wild dipping spots. We are situated between two small villages, Oakford and Stoodleigh which each have a lovely local pub. There are plenty of charming villages all within easy reach and with many good food options all around. The small town of Bampton is 4 miles away with independent cafes, butchers, bakers and a great local fresh produce shop. Exmoor and the river Exe are just above us and we are perfectly placed to be able to explore the sandy surf beaches in the west, the jurassic coast to the south and the wild north Devon coast above us.
Nearby attractions

Aldridge Mill is situated in more than 40 acres which campers are welcome to explore for walks and wild swimming. You can walk on public footpaths out into the surrounding countryside. The village of Oakford is less than two miles away, the village of Stoodleigh is just under three and the small, historic town of Bampton is four miles from site. The edge of Exmoor National Park is about five miles to the north with the gateway town of Dulverton (seven miles) a good place to start an adventure as it’s home to a National Park Centre. Walking, cycling and horse riding are popular things to do and there are stables at West Anstey from where you can go pony trekking on the moor. Alternatively, you can drive right across to reach the Exmoor coast at Porlock, Bossington or Lynton (all within 30 miles; about an hour’s drive). The south coast of Devon at Exmouth and the west coast beaches at Westward Ho! and Appledore are a similar distance. Closer to home, Tiverton is within 10 miles of the site – and home to Tiverton Castle and the Tiverton Canal Co who will take you on a horse-drawn barge trip on the canal that passes through town.

Food and drink

There are two pubs within three miles of Aldridge Mill campsite and you can walk to either if you enjoy a walk. The Red Lion in Oakford is closest with The Stoodleigh Inn a little further, both do food. There are more options in Bampton (four miles) where you’ll also find the closest shops. For a meal out, perhaps head for The Bridge House or Spelt. There are also a number of cafes, independent shops and small grocery stores. For a supermarket, head to Tiverton (nine miles).
