Rustic yurt glamping with a riverside setting, fell views and an enviable Lake District location

The Borrowdale valley – south of Keswick, at the foot of Derwent Water – pretty much encapsulates what’s best about the Lake District. Apart from the odd small hamlet, this dramatically beautiful landscape (National Trust-owned for the most part) is the preserve of traditional hill farms, one of which has gone into partnership with glamping provider Inside Out Camping – and a more bucolic site is difficult to imagine.

On the banks of the River Derwent, the six rustically-furnished yurts each sleep up to five people, with proper beds for four and the option of a blow-up mattress if you need to pump up the numbers. There’s a wood-burning stove, cooking facilities and a box of games for rainy days, while the hard-wood floors are topped with Morrocan rugs. Yet, while nights beside a fire and sleeping in proper beds has its obvious merits, Inside Out Camping is a place where, really, it’s the setting that sells. The location is an absolute marvel.

Beside your yurt, you can sit and listen to the babbling of the river or roll up your trousers and take a paddle. Around you, meanwhile, some of the greatest mountains of the North Lakes reach to the sky. To the south is Green Gable and Great Gable – which combined make an excellent walk directly from the site – and the long ridge of Glaramara, while, on the north side of Inside Out Camping is 2,470-foot Dale Head. The road next to the site, meanwhile, is the famous Honister Pass and it’s only a steep five-minute drive to its top where Honister Slate Mine is a rightfully popular attraction.

Whether it’s hiking over the pass to Buttermere, taking on the great challenge of climbing Scafell Pike (a 12-mile route from the campsite) or simply lounging by the river and soaking up some sun, you’re bound for a back-to-nature treat in one of the Lakes’ loveliest valleys.

We had an amazing four night stay at Seatoller. The Yurts are fantastic, comfortable and very well equipped, the log fire adds atmosphere and was very cosy. The location is ideal with easy access to Derwent water where we went swimming and hired a boat, Honister slate mine where we had an extreme adventure and walking distance to the corridor route to the top of Scafell Pike. Utterly fabulous holiday, highly recommended.

We have just returned from 4 nights in a Yurt and we had a great time. The yurt was comfortable, clean and charming. We had heat in excess of 29c so the yurt was very hot! What would have made the experience even better would have been some sort of fridge, or access to a 12 volt car cigarette socket to charge our cool box as we had no way of keeping anything cool at all. The Inventory was very good and we had everything we needed. The showers were just a 5 minute walk away and they were lovely and hot too. Thank you Simon for making our stay great and going out of your way to bring the Prosecco.

Seatoller Yurt
Well-equipped yurt with all the comforts of home! Comfortable and warm beds, two burner stove, and lovely cosy log fire. The gentle noise of the beautiful river close by lulls you to sleep and the dawn chorus helps wake you up! Noticeably quiet road - so little traffic. Showers are large and spacious with unlimited free hot water (100 yards away). Toilets and washing up facilities are a little nearer (50 yards), but cold water only.

Great facilities- cooker, stove, gas and first bag of wood supplied for the wood burning stove. A little chilly whilst we were there, but the stove took the edge off that at night. Really good local walks on your doorstep. The reason for 4 stars is that the bedding was mostly down and non hypoallergenic (I'm sure Simon would have sorted this is we had asked but signal was hard to come by!), and the showers were a little further than we had hoped- although they were nice and clean and hot. We would definitely recommend and stay again ourselves.

If you enjoy camping but dread never being fully dry or warm and cooking in the rain then this is perfect! One week in the wettest place in England was fantastic. The yurts were perfect, clean, tidy and well provisioned. Big enough for 3/4 not to feel on top of each other, small enough to be cosy. We were worried initially about the lack of electricity but they have an excellent solar power system of lights and USB chargers which was great, not that you need it there's zero phone signal so no need for phones anyway! Check in was super easy, we just turned up and were ready to go. Toilets were a minute walk away, no frills cold water only and washing up facilities. Showers are at the main farm house, other reviews say they're a 15min walk away, my 3yr old made it in 7. I've walked further in other campsite. Shower cubicles are enormous and easily wash a family in one go, warm and clean. Major bonus is Apple Jacks pizza and breakfast place at the farmhouse for a cheeky takeaway! Brilliant location for walks or rides. Regular buses into Keswick and up Honnister. Simon was a star, quietly present and was great with some troublesome campers. Couldn't recommend it more, would definitely do this again!

Inside Out Yurts in Seatoller, Borrowdale provide you with affordable comfort in a beautiful place. It's the ideal place to come and stay with family or friends as you can wander by the River Derwent close to the site or walk straight out on to the fells. From the quaint Lake District town of Keswick you drive along the shores of Derwentwater into the breathtakingly stunning Borrowdale valley and on to the foot of Honister pass. Here you will find our comfortable yurts from where you can seek excitement and adventure or just relax and reconnect with nature in this stunning picturesque location. We have yurts at the Seatoller Farm, in the Borrowdale valley near Keswick. It is a working hill farm run by the Simpson family. The farmers own the campsite as a whole and we share their facilities. The Lake District is world renowned for its natural beauty, receiving UNESCO World Heritage site status in 2017. This accolade only went to confirm what everyone who visits this area already knew. We believe here in Borrowdale we have the views and landscape to rival anywhere in the world.
Nearby attractions
Seatoller Farm is handy for serious climbs up Scafell Pike, Great Gable and others. The major town of Keswick (market days on Thursday and Saturday) is 5 miles up the road (there’s a regular bus), and there are cruise-launch piers all around nearby Derwent Water (017687 77263) so you can leave the car at the campsites for the duration.
Food and drink

Grange Bridge Cottage Tea Shop (017687 77201) is perfect for riverside teas and lunches, and no less than Prince Charles is a regular visitor to the Flock-In café and farm-shop at Rosthwaite’s Yew Tree Farm (017687 77675). Best valley pub is the Riverside Bar at the Scafell Hotel, also in Rosthwaite – you can walk from either site, but take a torch for the journey back.
