The Lake District is arguably the most beautiful corner of England. With a combination of picture-perfect villages, sensational lakes and glorious green dales, this remarkable region is surely the perfect retreat for any camper. Described by romantic poet William Wordsworth as “The loveliest spot that man hath found” it’s hard to disagree, especially on a clear Cumbrian day.
Tucked away down a narrow country lane, Eskdale can be found in one of the Lake's more secluded pockets. Run by the ever-friendly Sara and Martyn, the eight acres of flat, well maintained grassland are backed by tall trees with a tranquil stream snaking past.
Upon arrival, you instantly realise Eskdale's facilities have been created with hassle-free camping in mind. Pitch sizes are generous, facilities well-maintained, and the fully-stocked shop is a life saver when you forget your toothbrush!
If you wish to get reacquainted with Mother Nature, then Eskdale’s location couldn’t be better. The site is ideally placed for reaching the impressive Wasdale fells or climbing England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike. Also right on your doorstep is one of the most beautiful train journeys in England, the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway. This historic, narrow gauge railway carries passengers along seven miles of spectacular scenery on an unforgettable 40-minute ride.
Eskdale has a cosy, friendly atmosphere and is a genuinely lovely place to camp, in a region with no shortage of great pitchup spots.
The list of things to see and do in the Lake District is endless, so here are a couple suggestions that are close to Eskdale. The Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway (01229 717171) is a wonderfully nostalgic way to take in the spectacular scenery. The small, scenic village of Boot is just a few minutes walk away. After crossing the 17th century packhorse bridge, visit one of the very few remaining two-wheel water mills at The Eskdale Mill (019467 23335.) Take the “Millers Tour” and learn about Cumbrian life, its industry and its people. The secluded Japanese Garden at Eskdale Green is one of the jewels in Cumbria’s horticultural crown. Following years of neglect, the garden has been lovingly restored and now displays some vibrant Japanese maples, thickets of bamboo and dainty little bridges. The forest is open to the public and makes a great little walk. For outdoor adventure activities contact West Lakes Adventure, less than a mile away.
Eskdale has a good choice of places to eat, with plenty of friendly pubs, restaurants and cosy tea rooms all close-by. The Woolpack Inn (01946 723230) is a charming, traditional Cumbrian pub with a contemporary twist. The downstairs dining room has been transformed into a sleek, new eaterie serving gourmet wood-fired pizzas. The recently refurbished Boot Inn (019467 23711) has a varied selection of local cuisine that gives diners a real taste of Cumbria. Fill up on the generously sized “Great British Sunday Lunch” which serves prime cuts of local meat with all the trimmings. Only a short stroll away is the family run, Brook House Inn (019467 23288.) Voted West Cumbria’s pub of the year, this traditional tavern serves fine British food and a wide range of local ales. Onsite catering options are also available.
