Glamping pods in Cumbria's secluded Eden Valley with views of the Pennines

Cairn Meadow’s four cosy, well-equipped glamping pods are huddled around a natural pond in the Cumbrian countryside, providing a peaceful getaway that serves as the perfect base to explore north-west England. Within a 20-minute drive you can get to the Great Border City of Carlisle, the beautiful Geltsdale Nature Reserve, or historic Hadrian’s Wall, while a little further will take you to the Lake District. And yet the site itself feels miles away. A real hidden preserve, with views out onto the Pennines.

This family-run campsite teams an ideal location with robust amenities. The self-contained pods feature everything you need – an en-suite bathroom, TV, and a kitchenette – along with a number of luxuries – underfloor heating, a firepit, and a hireable barbecue for rustling up some food with your loved ones. Each pod sleeps up to four between their comfortable double bed and pull-out sofa bed, and two of the pods are pet-friendly, so you can bring your dog along for the trip.

The campsite is tucked away in a quiet part of the idyllic Eden Valley, with Cairn Beck flowing alongside. Admire your surroundings from the picnic benches, located in their own wide patch of grass next to the pods, where there's also a firepit. The abundance of water here means you’ll see plenty of wildlife, with the pods themselves – from Moorhen to Oyster Catcher – appropriately named after wading birds.

Carlisle is great for days out. There's the castle at its heart (home to Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life) and the city's grand cathedral, while the market town of Brampton is a top spot for pubs and cafes. It's 30 minutes, meanwhile, to the edge of the Lake District, where the likes of Skiddaw, Blencathra, High Pike and Great Sca Fell are the nearest peaks to climb. Start and finish somewhere like Keswick for good foodie options after or make your way back to Cairn Meadow for something closer to home... If you fancy a tipple without the drive, The Pheasant is a 20-minute walk away, a good old-fashioned country pub with a real sun trap of a beer garden.

Great stay
Was a lovely sight, and the pod was immaculately clean and well equipped. Lovely spot with great views and it was very spacious. Only downside was no internet/mobile connection or WiFi. Lovely pub with great food a short walk away.

Perfect all round!
Very comfortable Pods, absolutely perfect. Lots of small touches to ensure we had a great stay by the host. Lots of space for our dog to have fun and considering we didn't have great weather the Pods were warm and cozy and the underfloor heating was a welcomed luxury. Perfect for a getaway and we will definitely be back. Thanks for hosting us.

Gorgeous stay
Absolutely beautiful pod and location. The pod was immaculate, and very well equipped. It had been thoroughly cleaned and had everything we needed. The double bed was brilliant and very comfortable and there was plenty of pillows and bedding. The sofa bed was the only thing that let the pod down, it wasn't very comfortable and had a metal bar that ran along the middle which made it difficult for an older child to sleep on. Shower was a welcome treat and we had plenty of hot water as well as soft, fresh smelling towels. The owner had kindly left a bottle of beer and a small bottle of wine for the grown ups and some Haribo which was a lovely treat. There was also a pint of fresh milk in the fridge. Once of the nicest glamping pods we've stayed in and definitely the cleanest and best equipped!

Glamping pod with dog
The pitch was lovely with parking next to the pod. There was a large grassy area in front of the pod with a picnic table and fire pitch for each pod, with plenty space between each one . The pods looked onto the hill with sheep and cows around us . My dog loved the space too .

The site is a quiet family run tranquil at the foot of the North Pennines, just beside the Eden Valley. We have static caravans and 6 touring pitches. Only 30 minutes from the Lake District, with Hadrian's wall nearby, the unspoilt Eden Valley and Solway coast all easily reachable. We have the market towns of Brampton and Penrith close by and we border the city of Carlisle. We have numerous lovely walks within a 5min car ride, Talkin tarn the river Gelt, Castle Carrick reservoir and the north pennines
Nearby attractions

Carlisle Castle is a 20-minute drive away and is right in the centre of Carlisle itself. This 900-year-old structure has stood tall following many sieges, with it therefore containing visible evidence of centuries of wars. Hadrian's Wall is a 30-minute drive, providing unforgettable views across its 73-mile stretch, a place to see rare artefacts from the Roman era. Talkin Tarn is a great day out for the family, with this country park providing a bunch of activities – kayaking, paddleboarding, and canoeing are available in its 65-acre lake – as is open water swimming for the brave – along with tearooms for a coffee break. For more picturesque scenery, travel 30 minutes to the Lake District, the largest National Park in England – given its size, make sure you plan a full day out here!

Food and drink

The Pheasant Inn is the closest pub to the site, with it reachable in a 20-minute walk. There's a sizeable outdoor seating area alongside it, and it boasts an individually selected wine menu along with real ales from local breweries, and a restaurant menu of premium takes on classic dishes from around the world. Fantails is a 10-minute drive away, a unique building dating back to the 1600s that used to be a blacksmith's forge. Located on the village green, here you'll find sizeable skewers from its classic dining menu, a special kids menu, and a whole host of cocktails. Bookings are advised (01228 560239). Carlisle has a slew of places to eat and drink, from the luxurious Penny Blue – a bar and restaurant within the award-winning Halston Hotel – and its unique tapas menu, to the extremely popular Alexandros Greek Restaurant and Deli. There's deli takeaway here, too, so you can grab something on the go if you're strapped for time!
