A cabin with views on a private country estate in Dorchester

Cottage Orné sits high on a hillside looking down the Bride Valley in the Dorset National Landscape, just a few miles inland from the Jurassic Coast. Perhaps most striking in the view from the deck of this little cabin though, is “the big house” on whose estate it sits. Belmont House is a fascinating country pile surrounded by 180 acres which you are welcome to explore. It’s home to cows, sheep and chickens who you’re likely to meet when you stay. It’s also home to your host, Evie, who, like this stylish and self-contained little cabin, is welcoming and lovely.

The cabin has everything a couple or a family of four could want for a few days away including the kitchen sink – and a dishwasher too. It’s a compact little space offering open-plan living but it really packs it in. There’s a king-sized bed that’s theatrically framed by curtains, a sofa bed and a cool mezzanine double in the eaves, that your kids are going to love. There’s a table and chairs, a well-stocked kitchenette and an en suite shower room and loo. It’s self catering – studio style that’s well connected to the outdoors. If the sun is shining during your stay, you’re bound to spend a lot of time on the deck outside the front door. There’s an off-ground fire pit which doubles as a barbecue and a place to toast marshmallows, as well as those lovely views.

Evie is often on hand to explain the surprisingly short history of her family’s home at Belmont House or to take you to meet the animals who live on the estate’s farm. If she’s not around you’re welcome to wander. Off site, Dorset’s coast and countryside are both tempting to investigate. Burton Bradstock is the closest place to swim or sunbathe, at one end of Chesil Beach, and there are plenty more within an easy drive. The estate is also between Dorchester and Bridport, both worth a look around and handy if you need supplies for cooking at your lovely little cabin.

The Cottage Orné host sensational panoramic views Of the Bride Valley, and a stones throw from the Jurassic Coast. Built with comfort in mind The Orne will make an ideal and unique stay for any season all year round. The cabin is surrounded by nature and guest are welcome to walk where they like. There is a king sized bed, plus sofa bed and a small double mezzanine designed for children.  The kitchen has all the modcons dishwasher, hot water 24/7 and well heated throughout. Fire pit on deck with festoon lighting.  There is parking behind cabin.

Our stay at Cottage Orne.
Such a lovely stay! We couldnt have asked for better hosts at Cottage Orne, friendly, welcoming and we felt at home straight away! The cabin was lovely, packed with everything we needed along with a very comfortable bed, mezzanine bed and pull out sofa bed so there was plenty of room for our stay. The grounds were incredible with lots of lovely farm animals to see and beautiful views all around us. Amazing experience that we would recommend to everyone!

The Cottage Orné
Great stay
We really loved our stay at Evie's cabin, there are beautiful views and lovely touches everywhere. It's quite remote, very quiet at night, we enjoyed listening to the owls and looking at the stars. Easy to find with directions provided. The kids really enjoyed sleeping in the bunkbed too. We will definitely be back if we are back in the area. Thank you again!

The Cottage Orné
Relaxing break
I went to Cottage Orne with two girlfriends for a relaxing weekend break and we had a wonderful time. Cottage Orne has been beautifully put together and styled, and the location is perfect for getting away from it all. It was great to meet Evie and hear the story of the house. Thank you Evie for sharing part of your home for others to enjoy!

Nearby attractions

Cottage Orné is within the estate of Belmont House which is between the villages of Long Bredy and Little Bredy in the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There are plenty of good walks around the area – especially if you like the challenge of hills – including on the Macmillan Way which passes close by. Closer to the coast is the South Dorset Ridgeway and on the coastline is the South West Coast Path. The nearest beaches are about six miles away. A popular one to head for is Hive Beach, just off the village of Burton Bradstock (six miles) where sand is backed by cliffs and you can find fossils. A little further along the coast, with more facilities, is West Bay (10 miles). Charmouth and Lyme Regis are both within 20 miles. In the other direction, Weymouth, is only 12 miles away. For something other than a day on the beach, head for the Subtropical Gardens or the Swannery at Abbotsbury (seven miles), the market town of Bridport or the country town of Dorchester (both eight miles). Just beyond Dorchester, you can visit Thomas Hardy’s Cottage, thanks to the National Trust who maintain it as it was in the 1800s. Families with little kids might like to visit Vurlands Farm for more farm animals and indoor and outdoor play areas. It's five miles from site.

Food and drink

The closest place for a meal out whilst staying at Cottage Orné is The White Horse Inn in Litton Cheney (two miles away). And somewhere recommended by your host, Evie, is The Parlour, a lovely restaurant on Bredy Farm (five miles) which serves good Italian food, including pizzas, at lunchtimes and in the evenings. If you’re down at Burton Bradstock’s beach for the day, try The Hive Beach Cafe (six miles) for fish and seafood dishes. The village is also home to the closest shop for picking up supplies if you want to cook on site, as is Abbotsbury where there’s a farm shop with local produce. For more than that head to Bridport or Dorchester (both eight miles) which both have plenty of independent shops and larger grocery stores. Bridport has a market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Dorchester had a market on Wednesdays.
