Adults-only bell tents on an off-grid site with campfires near the North Cornish coast

If your vision of a holiday in Cornwall involves yoga, surfing, campfires, canvas and a taste of the simple life, then leave the family-friendly sites behind and book a bell tent at The Paddock Wildcamp. It’s an adults-only, bell tent site in countryside between Perranporth and Newquay. There’s a yoga school across the road, a thatch-roofed pub a mile down the road and a choice of beaches five minutes’ drive away. Ready to go? We don’t blame you.

This new-for-2021 summer campsite ticks the boxes in so many ways, but it’s fair to say it won’t be for everyone. The place is off grid and, while the solar power on site is enough to charge phones and tablets, don’t expect to plug in a hairdryer or get your ice blocks frozen. Part of the joy of being here is enjoying the simple life for a few days and owner Ren is a sociable sort who’ll be happy to share tips on sustainable living. Having said all that, The Paddock Wildcamp is not without its luxuries. Ren has travelled the world, staying in and managing hostels, so she knows how to look after her guests.

She has pre-pitched four bell tents here and kitted each out with a bed. You’ll need to bring your own bedding and food but otherwise it’s all set up for you. There are solar lights, cooking equipment and a fire pit outside. There’s a rustic but lovely outdoor kitchen – all reclaimed wood, corrugated tin cladding and fairy lights – with a gas stove, barbecue, kitchen sink and all-important kettle. There’s a hot shower and a compost loo that’s so good it’s won an award from the Cornish off-grid community.

The site is just an acre but as there’s only ever a handful of grown-up glampers there’s plenty of room to roam alongside the site’s free-range chickens and ducks. Roam out of site and a mile down the road and you can eat at The Smuggler’s Den pub or follow footpaths across fields for 40 minutes to swim at Holywell Bay. Otherwise, it’s five or ten minutes in the car to reach the surf at Perranporth or Newquay, half an hour to Padstow or St Ives. This is the place to base yourself if you want a summer holiday on the north Cornish coast away from the crowds. It’s a chilled-out spot that’s near great beaches; off grid but on point.

Perranporth Bell tent
Magical paddock
The experience was exactly what me and my partner were looking for. Off grid and back to nature. The bell tents were spacious and bed was comfortable. The amenities were excellent and even using a compost toilet was a great experience and not as smelly as you would have thought. Lovely hot shower available and the outdoor kitchen had everything you needed with an open fire. Absolutely magical place and Ren was the perfect host, so friendly.

Perranporth Bell tent
We stayed here for 3 nights back in July and we had a great time. The outdoor kitchen and fire pit are a great place to spend the evenings. Holy Well beach is a lovely walk away, about 45 mins. Ren was very accommodating and my dog had a great time!

We stayed here for a special anniversary and found this place to be just what we wanted in what is a very busy summer in Cornwall. It is tucked away from the hustle and bustle but Perranporth is a short drive away, we walked to Holywell Bay which took us 40minutes and it is a lovely beach. Ren gave us a warm welcome and nothing was too much trouble. The camp kitchen had everything we needed and our first experience of a compost toilet was not bad at all due to Rens helpful instructions. We were well impressed with the lengths that have been gone to to make the space beautiful. Thank you.

So glad to have come across this site, so chilled and in a perfect location. Ideal for couples and small groups of friends. Will definitely be booking to go again next year. Highly recommend!

Ren and Betty were the perfect hosts, so helpful and kind. Ren had loads of knowledge about the local area and couldn’t have done more to make us feel welcome. The tent was lovely and the beds were super comfy. It was great to get back to basics and know that we were helping the environment. Everything we needed was supplied and the kitchen area especially was lovely. It had everything we needed and was so beautiful. It was great to wake up with the chickens and ducks roaming around and it was so beautiful to end the day cozied up in front of the fire pit underneath the solar lights. The area was situated right near Perranporth and not far from Newquay so was great for surfing. We honestly didn’t want to leave and hope to go back next year! What you get for the price is unbelievable and we both feel so fortunate to have stumbled across this gem!

The award winning Paddock is set on a quiet lane with open valley views of the beautiful Cornish countryside. I live on-site in my off-grid log cabin I built and try to be as sustainable as I can by living simply, growing as much of my food, composting waste food, recycling and aim to be plastic-free as possible. Sustainability is at the heart of all I do and all of the buildings at the Paddock are made from recycled materials that would otherwise go to landfill or be burnt. Shabby chiq at its finest! The Paddock has been a labour of love over the past few years transforming it from an unloved, overgrown field into a space of tranquility and colour. I have a variety of chickens and ducks that free-range during the day and are excellent at keeping pesky slugs and snails at bay as well as producing delicious eggs that are available to buy, highly recommended for your breakfast. Spend your days relaxing while listening to bird songs, watching the swifts and swallows swoop down or the buzzards that soar overhead, or explore the local walks, villages and many places of interest Cornwall has to offer. If you surf then you will be spoilt for choice of beaches all within a few minutes drive. If you have never surfed and fancy having a go then you can either hire a board and suit for the day or maybe book a half-day lesson at one of the many surf schools in the area. After all that activity there's nothing better than enjoying a drink while watching the stunning Cornish sunset from a beach bar or returning to the Paddock for a bbq and relax around the firepit, you might even hear the owls hooting if you listen carefully. However you choose to spend your days here, you will return home relaxed and revitalised.
Nearby attractions

There is a yoga school, Lime House Yoga (01872 572620) just over the road from the site. The closest beaches are Holywell bay and Perranporth, both about a five-minute drive away (two miles), with Newquay six miles in the other direction. You can walk across fields to Holywell Bay with its distinctive Gull Rocks, which fans of the TV series Poldark may recognise. There are plenty of surf schools and lots of facilities on the beaches of Newquay and Perranporth. Holywell is a quieter spot with just one seasonal shop. All of the north coast of Cornwall is yours to explore with foodie harbour town Padstow 20 miles north of The Paddock and artsy St Ives just under 30 miles south. Both Lands End and the less commercialised Lizard Point are around 40 miles from here and a drive of about an hour.

Food and drink

The closest pub is the charming Smugglers Den Pub and Restaurant (01637 830209), a mile away and walkable along a quiet country lane. It offers great quality food all day but you're advised to book in advance for dinner as it is very popular. There are plenty of places to eat and drink in Perranporth, a five-minute drive from site, including the famous bar on the beach –The Wateringhole, which often has live music. For organic and good quality local produce try Mr Fruity in Goonhavern, a couple of miles down the road. There are plenty of shops for supplies including an excellent butcher (Chapmans) in Perranporth. For seasonal local produce, there's also a farmers market once a month in Newquay (six miles from site) and a more regular, weekly one in Truro (nine miles away) on Saturdays.
