Yurts on a farm site with its own riverside beach in Devon’s Tamar Valley

Lower Marsh Farm offers dog-friendly yurt glamping in the Tamar Valley on the Devon-Cornwall border. It’s a 40-acre farm that’s managed for wildlife on the banks of the river with just three yurts in its wild meadows. Not that you'll necessarily recognise them. The 'yurts' are more like timber-walled cabins, designed to stand up to the famously changeable British weather and give you the chance to enjoy this special spot all year round. In spring you can see daffodils and bluebells in the farm’s woodland. In summer you can swim from the private shingle beach on the river. In autumn the campfire comes in handy and in winter you can watch wading birds on the riverside salt marshes.

This varied habitat provides the backdrop to stays, which are surrounded by—not at the mercy of—nature. Each yurt is a cosy bedroom for two, with a king-sized bed, twinkly lights, and a log burner. Chenoweth Yurt is the most secluded, in a meadow on its own. Haye and Noss Mayo Yurts share a meadow but still have plenty of space. The set up means they can be booked individually or together, which will suit families with teens or couples who want to holiday together. They both have zip-and-link beds so they can be configured as twin bedrooms instead of doubles, and there’s a compost loo in the field they share. Otherwise facilities, like the parking, are a short walk away in the farm courtyard. As well as a bathroom with a hot shower and flushing loo, there’s a boot room, a laundry, a games room with table tennis, and a field kitchen.

Glampers, like guests at the farm’s three self-catering cottages, have freedom to explore across the whole site. There are pathways across the salt marshes down to riverside beach and there are routes through the woodland too. The farm is on the edge of the tiny settlement of Landulph, which sits between Devon’s Dartmoor National Park and the Rame Head Peninsula on the South Cornish Coast. It means you have the full range of South-West treasures within reach: wild moors, rivers, quiet countryside, and beaches.

Chenoweth Yurt

Beautiful relaxing time. Area was incredible the scenery and area was bliss. The animals were a lovely touch waking up and see all the peacocks and chickens around.

Off Grid Authentic Yurt

A romantic mini-break

We had such a lovely stay! Our yurt was so cosy, it was evidently very well insulated, and the features inside were beautifully handcrafted! I loved the farm atmosphere with the ducks and chickens wandering around, as well as some very inquisitive peacocks! I had never seen baby peacocks before, they’re very cute. The kitchenette was also a strong plus point with gas hob, and the fridge/freezer meant our food stayed fresh and we didn’t need to shop every day. The bathroom was really clean and comfortable, we happened to be the only people staying in the yurts (out of three) so had the kitchen and bathroom to ourselves, which was a bonus. The bathroom was a bit of a walk away, through the field and down some stairs (as was the entrance + the car) which was fine for us, but I think my parents would have struggled for example. Olivia was there to welcome us and was really friendly and helpful, and was happy to chat when we asked for some local recommendations. It felt like we had our own space and privacy too though :) overall, we made some lovely memories here and we would love to stay again!

Located in the beautiful Tamar Valley on the Cornwall / Devon board, our spacious authentic ‘off grid’ yurts are set on our traditional gently sloping meadow, in a rural location overlooking the river and a Nature Reserve. Inside, our yurts are furnished with king sized double bed, a log burner and bespoke styling with solar powered atmospheric lighting. For your improved comfort, the yurts are insulated (warm in cooler weather, and cooler in warm weather!) and fully water proof. Outside, relax in rustic seating around a fire pit and just star gaze. The fire pit is also BBQ, marshmallow toaster, kettle boiler or even full English breakfast maker! A modern shared bathroom is conveniently located a short walk away. As is a shared rustic field kitchen with under cover cooking / dining facilities. Please be aware no naked flames are allowed in yurts with the exception of the log burner. - An EV charger is available at the farm (request a tag when booking and you will be charged for the amount of electricity used).

Nearby attractions

Lower Marsh Farm itself provides a fair amount to do with walking routes through the orchard, woodland and salt marshes. The riverside is a haven for wading birds so it’s a good palace for birdwatching. At high tide the farm’s private beach on the river provides the opportunity to go for a dip, a paddleboard or a kayak. If you don’t have your own kayak or paddleboard, you can hire them and book a lesson with local company, Mai Adventures. The farm is within the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and close to Dartmoor National Park so there’s plenty of good walking, wild swimming and cycling further afield too. Tamar Trails (13 miles away) are a network of off-road routes around a former quarry that are great for family cycling, walking and running. There’s also a treetop adventure course. The National Trust’s Cotehele Estate is eight miles from site where there’s a Tudor house, 14 acres of gardens and 12 acres of orchards to explore. For a seaside beach, head to Downderry and Seaton for shingle, Portwrinkle for rockpooling or Whitsand for three miles of sand and the opportunity to surf, all about 14 miles from the site.

Food and drink

You can walk from Lower Marsh Farm to The Rising Sun pub in Botus Fleming (two miles) for a drink but, for food, you’ll need to go elsewhere. MAMM Market Garden and Cafe is a good place to head for lunch with seasonal, local produce in its cafe and for sale, four miles away, in St Mellion. The Weary Friar is a traditional inn that does food in Saltash (five miles away) and the Who’d Have Thought It Inn is another pub with food and nice views (six miles) that’s not too far. For a good meal in a pub that’s dog friendly, The Springer Spaniel comes recommended by your hosts at Lower Marsh Farm. It’s 13 miles away but worth the drive. For local produce to cook back on site on your campfire or in the communal kitchen, there are plenty of farm shops and markets. Happy Wallow Farm Shop is one of the closest (six miles). Head for Tamar Valley Meats (five miles) for barbecue fodder. The closest supermarket is also nearby on the outskirts of Saltash.
