Traditional family camping near Coverack, with the promise of coast, countryside and Cornish ice cream

The white-washed homes and cottages of Coverack, tumble down from the surrounding hills as if drawn by the promise of the beach and the irresistibly pleasing sight of fishing boats bobbing on the water. Resisting the pull, are two farms on the edge of the village, both owned by members of an old-school Cornish family, the Roskillys. The north-east hillside is home to their ice cream farm and the organic dairy herd that supplies it. The south-west hillside is home to Coverack Camping, with a pleasant footpath connecting the two.

Caravans and campers have been making their way to Coverack Camping at Penmarth Farm for half a century, attracted by the valley views and sea glimpses the place provides. Established by Ben and Georgia Roskilly, it’s now being run by the next generation; nephew Jake and his partner Annette. There are plans to introduce Keltic and Bell Tents - pre erected tents on a decked area for the 2022 season, comfortable camping (work in progress), but for now, the modernisation has been subtle and it remains a fairly traditional place. The few static caravans of yesteryear and the slightly creaky toilet block may be gone but it remains a back-to-basics site with simple facilities. New compost loos, refurbished solar thermal shower with electric backup and a washing up area about the size of it; everything you need and nothing you don’t.

Pitches are pre-allocated and set across a number of hedged paddocks either side of a track which gives access for small campervans, small caravans, and tents. There are four grass pitches where electric hook-up is possible. The rest, 5 pitches for small caravans and 30 for tents, are grassy and off grid. For tent campers, the established access route means it’s perfect for those who like the convenience of parking next to pitch.

The real glory of this place is that it’s the closest campsite to the village (apart from a few pitches in the YHA garden). It’s a five-minute walk on footpaths to the sand and shingle beach that low tide reveals at Coverack and to its little harbour. The village has all the basics; a shop, fish and chips and somewhere to hire kayaks and paddleboards. You can walk from here on the South West Coast Path or drive 30 minutes to the UK’s most southerly spot at spectacular Lizard Point. And, don’t forget, for a taste of Roskillys organic ice cream you only have to hike over to the next hill. It’s a couple of miles from the campsite and a visit also offers a look round the farm. Cows, countryside, coast and ice cream... the staples of a holiday in Cornwall are here in spades – or should that be scoops?

Ben's Field Grass Pitch
Lovely campsite inear Coverack
We loved tent camping here! The piches on Ben”s potch field were large and there was a relaxed atmosphere. Toilets and showers are kept clean and the campsite is run in a smart, humorous and original manner. Coverack is just beautiful and a romantic 10 minute walk away.

Sea View Pitch 43 (Donkey Field)
Beautiful!
Absolutely fantastic campsite in a beautiful location. Sam and Isaac were so friendly, welcoming and helpful and everything was perfect for the whole stay. The pitches are really well spaced and the facilities are excellent and well planned. Coverack is gorgeous and we had the best fish and chips ever at the Lifeboat House on the harbour. Loved it, thank you! X

walker pitch
A treasure to be discovered
Peaceful and yet in walking distance to the harbor area, this place is a gem waiting to be explored. Communication with Annette and all staff has been very friendly and welcoming. We also liked their focus on environmental aspects and the fact that toilets have been placed close to all campsites.

Sea View pitch 45 (Donkey Field)
Pitch 45, although not the best seaview, was the most private. At the end of the donkey field, a quiet pitch with beautiful flora and birdsong.

Coverack Camping at Penmarth Farm. Welcome to Coverack Camping at Penmarth Farm, situated just above the picturesque fishing village of Coverack. The campsite is located on the East side of the Lizard Peninsula, Cornwall. Coverack Camping is a basic no frills eco campsite, close to nature, for tents, caravans (small), campervans and motorhomes (small) and 5x Celtic Tents ( comfortable camping). The campsite is set in 7 acres, separated into 7 small meadows, all surrounded by traditional Cornish Hedges that are full of native flora and fauna, providing shelter from the prevailing winds. It is a tranquil setting that has changed little in the past 50 years that it has been a campsite. The campsite is 5-10 minutes walking distance to the sandy beach of Coverack. Facilities include showers heated by solar thermal energy (with electric backup), lots of conveniently placed compost toilets, a covered picnic area with washing up facilities, freezer, internet and USB charge points. In the Main Field there are 4 x Celtic Longhouse Tents and 1 x Celtic Pod Tent (large insulated timber framed tents on a wooden deck, COMFORTABLE CAMPING), 8 x Electric Hook Ups, 7 x grass pitches with no electricity suitable for tents and small camper vans. The pitches are generous in size at least 10m in width. In this field are the showers, washing up facilities, a covered picnic area and water points. There are also male, female and unisex compost toilets. In the Lower Meadow, there is 5 pitches suitable for tents and small campervans with nearby compost toilets and water points. Upper Meadow there are 2 pitches for tents and small campervans and 5 walker pitches for small tents only (no cars). In the Donkey Field, (named after the original inhabitants) there are 21 pitches for tents, campervans & small motor homes. There is a separate vehicle access to this field 30m from the main entrance towards Coverack, the field has water points and compost toilets. The Donkeys have been moved to new pastures ! In Bay Field there are 6 pitches for tents and small campervans, vehicle access is via the Donkey or Main field. This field has sea views of Coverack Bay. There are compost toilets nearby, other facilities are in the Main Field. Ben’s Field has 5 tent and small campervan pitches, accessed via the Donkey Field through a narrow entrance (may not be suitable for all vehicles) with views of the valley and countryside. Facilities are in the nearby Main Field. Coverack is a beautiful village, although small, it does provide most essentials, with a village store, pub, takeaways, restaurant and café. A windsurfing school operates in the harbour hiring out kayaks and SUPs. Fishing trips operate from the harbour. The campsite is split into 7 main camping areas separated by traditional Cornish hedges and trees. This gives much privacy to campsite users and does give shelter in the event of inclement weather. The campsite was run for over 50 years by Ben and Georgia Roskilly. It has now been taken over by Ben's nephew and his wife, Jake and Annette Roskilly .
Nearby attractions

The campsite is situated above the beautiful fishing village of Coverack. It is an easy five-minute walk down to the beach and harbour via an off-road, scenic valley walk. The beach is suitable for swimming and Coverack Windsurfing Centre, which operates out of the harbour, offers lessons in windsurfing and equipment hire for stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking. The southwest coastal path passes through the village. Porthkerris Diving School (01326 280620) is six miles up the coast and the beautiful beaches at Kynance Cove and Lizard Point are both within 30-minute's drive of Coverack Camping. Roskilly's Farm is three miles away but can be reached via a lovely walk through the fields. There (along with eating ice cream – see below) you can join a pottery lesson run by ceramicist Sally Tully (book in advance).

Food and drink

On a warm sunny evening there's nothing better than a cold beer and fish and chips sitting on the sheltered harbour wall; try the takeaway options from The Lifeboathouse (01326 281 400). Also in the village is The Paris Hotel (01326 280258) which serves food and also does takeaway. Archies Loft (01326 281440) is a cute little cafe serving Roskilly's Ice cream and quality takeaway food. The village store has a range of goods including local produce and, for special occasions, try The Bay Hotel restaurant (01326 280464). Roskilly's Farm is the best place to try the family's well-known Cornish ice cream, as it is direct from source. There's also a casual restaurant on site that serves breakfasts and lunches.
