Home Farm sits in the blink-and-you'll-miss-it South Bucks village of Radnage. Helmed by affable host Andrew Radford, this traditional, family-run site boasts spectacular vistas of the surrounding Chiltern Hills. With myriad walking routes snaking from the site including the Ridgeway Path and Icknield Way, Home Farm is the perfect base for exploring this lush, unspoilt landscape less than an hour to the west of the capital. There's several acres of well-shorn grass to pitch up your tent or park your campervan, and while facilities might be a touch on the basic side, they're more than adequate. Kids will love letting their imaginations run wild – the spacious verdant fields their own personal fiefdom of fun – while mum and dad can recline and soak up the sunset over those famous hills.
As all cool campers know, proximity to a decent boozer is high on our list of cool campsite credentials. We all love the post-pitch up stroll into the nearby village to find that welcoming country pub and savour a pint of the local brew, unwind in the beer garden (or dry off beside the roaring fireplace as the case may be), and get the inside scoop from the locals on what to see and do. One thing we're less fond of though is the schlep back to camp, particularly if you've got littl'uns with you or, if you've... ahem... over indulged (you know who you are). Well, thankfully a treacherous night time stagger tentward is one thing thing you won't need to worry about at this idyllic Chiltern Hills site – for you'll be camping right next to not one, but two of the area's nicest pubs. We'll drink to that?
The regal streets of Windsor lie a little over half an hour away – visit her world famous castle (020 7766 7304) or spend a day chasing after the kids at Legoland (0871 222 2001). For fearless souls, The Hell-Fire Caves (01494 533739) are essential visiting. Descend 500m through a network of 15th century caverns carved out of the chalk by the infamous high-society rake and founder of the Hellfire Club, Sir Francis Dashwood. Besides guided ghost walks and spooky storytelling, there's a school of witchcraft for your mini magicians. Back on the surface world, West Wycombe is a charming village lined with timber-beamed Tudor houses and quaint, olde-worlde shops. Explore Bucks on two wheels via the Chilterns Cycleway – a scenic route divided into 23 sections ranging from 4 to 14 pedal-friendly miles. For another great day out, Oxford and The Cotswolds lie to the north and west.
The Crown at Radnage (01494 482301) next door is an absolute gem, with a fine host of ales and excellently-executed pub grub favourites. Nearby, The Three Horseshoes (01494 483273) lies just downhill (bring a torch for the schlep back home!). Casketeers should drop by the Rebellion Brewery (01628 476594) in Marlowe to stock up on some local ales to enjoy back at camp. For a taste of the orient, The Gurkha Hut at The Royal Oak (01494 483437) serves delicious Nepalese cuisine. If you're really looking to push the boat out, The Sir Charles Napier (01494 483011) is a stunningly-located Michelin-starred gastro pub with a beautiful wild garden.
