Camping in Nidderdale with excellent facilities, dogs and campfires welcome, and views over Thruscross Reservoir.

Breaks Fold Farm provides camping on a traditional working farm within Yorkshire’s peaceful Washburn Valley, on the fringe of the Yorkshire Dales and in the heart of Nidderdale. You can choose your own spacious pitch here in a field enveloped by towering pine trees, providing a perfect base from which to explore the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There are good views, ample footpaths, modern facilities and campfires and pets are allowed. It kinda ticks all the boxes, right?

Walkers and cyclists, in particular, will love it here. The site sits on the edge of the Thruscross Reservoir, the highest of four in Washburn, making it a much quieter option for explorers. A footpath runs around it, providing stunning views across the water and surrounding moorland. You can easily join the Six Dales Trail from the campsite, following the River Washburn south, or head to nearby Brimham for rock climbing and mountain biking routes.

Less than 10 minutes' drive west of Breaks Fold Farm, you also find yourself in the Yorkshire Dales, its famous three peaks – Pen-y-Ghent, Ingleborough, and Whernside – likely beckoning. You’re also roughly equidistant from Harrogate and Skipton, for more idle days mooching in shops and cafés and generally taking in the atmosphere of the historic market towns.

The facilities at the campsite are a cut above – all modern and well-maintained. There are wet-room-style showers and proper flushing loos and a good, practical amount of space. Firepits are available to hire and barbecues (off the ground) are allowed. It’s all very laid-back. With days spent exploring Yorkshire's most beautiful scenery and evenings stargazing beneath its unpolluted skies, Breaks Fold Farm is as easy-going a camping holiday as you're likely to find.

If you are looking for a totally non-commercial experience, then Breaks Fold Farm is the perfect choice for you. The camping field is set over a 3 acre field, surrounding by woodland, just a 2 minute walk down to Thruscross Reservoir. The pitches are grass pitches, no electric hook up, marked but unallocated to allow campers the freedom to choose their pitch. Good old fashioned camping, with great facilities and stunning location. Wake up to the birds singing and sounds of nature. Though the school holidays there is an additional field opened to make even more space. The facilities are made up of separate female and male toilets and 4 individual heated family shower rooms. There is also an indoor washing up area and free to use fridges and freezers. Free WiFi is available onsite. A small play area is located at the bottom of the main camping field to occupy little campers, which can be seen from all the pitches in the main field. Fire Pits are available to buy onsite, with top up wood available at a discounted rate. The field is partially sloping due to the nature of the landscape, but the surface is well maintained and pitches large so campers have the freedom to choose where to pitch. Quiet times are in operation between 10pm and 8am to ensure everyone has a peaceful and enjoyable stay. Dogs on leads are welcomed on the campsite. The location is perfect for four legged family members due to the miles of walks available on the doorstep. There are also several dog friendly attractions nearby. Small camper vans (12ft max i.e. VW) welcome. Trailer tents welcome . There are lots of local attractions to visit within a short drive - Fountains Abbey, Bolton Abbey, Skipton Castle, RHS Harlow Carr, Forbidden Corner, Ripon Museums, Lightwater Valley, East Riddlesdon Hall, Harewood House, Brigham Rocks, Hesketh Farm, Ilkley Moor, Fewston and Swinsty Reservoirs, The Himalayan Gardens Ripon, York and attractions. There is something for every member of your family. Always available to help, but leave you in peace to enjoy your break.

Lovely spot by reservoir
Lovely spot. Nice and quiet by reservoir. Good loos, showers and wash up area. Bit of a trek up if in bottom field but nice sheltered location by trees and a bit more secluded in bottom field when quiet. Farmers who run the sight very friendly folk. Would visit again. Good location for visiting fountains abbey, Brimham rocks, Harrogate etc.

Breaks Fold Farm Grass Camping
Lovely time. Very peaceful. Enough away from the A59 to feel out in the countryside but still close enough to Harrogate, Skipton and Ilkley for supplies as required. We recommend the walk to Blubberhouses and the Mackenzie’s farm shop and restaurant.

Really welcoming and friendly
Wonderful place to camp. Richard was really friendly and helpful, he comes round the field every evening to make sure you have enough firewood etc. Facilities were great, super clean. You can really feel how much heart and effort Richard and Louise put into making everyone enjoy their camping experience on this site. Location is great for walks around the moors. Although it's a great place for kids, we were an adult couple staying there and it was perfect, too.

Breaks Fold Farm is a traditional 225 acre working hill farm in the beautiful Washburn Valley, North Yorkshire. 2022 winners of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society North Yorkshire area Tye Trophy for contribution to environment and conservation. The farm and site are committed to the environment and conservation, to preserve this amazing place for generations to come. The site was also the original home of C4's 'Carry on Glamping', chosen for the outstanding views and secluded location. Although the vehicles are no longer here, this field can be enjoyed either in our very own hand crafted Shepherd's Hut or in your touring caravan/motorhome. Situated in the Nidderdale AONB, with dark sky status. Perfect for a quiet getaway in peaceful natural surroundings. The site neighbours Thruscross Reservoir, with miles of off-road walks by the water or on the moors. Although the site is rural, it is just a short drive to the popular Skipton, Harrogate, Bolton Abbey, Grassington and Pateley Bridge. The accommodation is made up of camping, caravan and motorhome pitches and Glamping. There is something to suit everyone and any budget.
Nearby attractions

The site is located on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, with its three peaks all within an hour's drive. Its diverse landscape must be explored; from moorland to meadow and river to waterfall, there's plenty to see here. Fountains Abbey is a 30-minute drive away, its 12th-century ruins now a National Trust site with a gorgeous Georgian water garden and medieval deer park – you may even be able to see a new baby deer. The charming little market town of Pateley Bridge is a 15-minute drive – both the starting and finishing point of the 53-mile Nidderdale Way long-distance route. Stump Cross Caverns are a little over a 10-minute drive, natural caves with a history spanning hundreds of millions of years, with their natural formations and remains of prehistoric creatures letting you step back in time.

Food and drink

The nearby towns of Harrogate and Skipton, both around a 20-minute drive away, provide plenty of places to eat and drink. In Harrogate, check out Mykonos Bar and Grill, a popular restaurant serving authentic Greek food with indoor and outdoor seating. Reservations are advised (0142 356 5151). For drinks, the Little Ale House comes recommended, an independent craft ale micro pub with rotating cask ales, a great atmosphere, and outdoor seating options. For a pub close to the site, the 18th-century Sun Inn is a 10-minute drive away, with spacious seating ideal for families and a patio with views out onto Nidderdale. There's a kid's menu for the little ones, a carvery on Sundays, and a pool table for some fun and games.
