A year-round lakeside site for motorhomes and caravans in Suffolk

Arthur’s Retreat is a small, year-round site for campervans, motorhomes, and caravans not far from Thetford Forest in Suffolk. With a lake and countryside views, it’s a lovely place to park up for a few nights but, on top of that, it’s convenient too. Located right in the middle of East Anglia, it’s a handy spot if you want a base from which to explore both sides of the Norfolk-Suffolk border. And because it’s not far off the A143, you can whizz 20 minutes in one direction to historic Bury St Edmunds and 20 minutes in the other to the market town of Diss.

There are just nine pitches on this well-located site, which is only open to people with their own facilities on board. It’s a simple site which offers a chemical disposal point and bins – but no showers or loos. Pitches, however, are well appointed with a drinking water tap and a picnic bench at each. There’s also electric hook up and fire pit hire, both available at an extra charge. Host Hollie, who named the site after her baby son, lives just next door and usually pops along in the evening to make sure everything is ticking along nicely—and typically it is. This is a dog-friendly, family-friendly, and generally friendly site that’s small enough for you to get to know your neighbours if you want to.

You might, however, not have time for that. In addition to being a great base for walks and bike rides in Thetford Forest and for exploring the villages and towns of rural Suffolk, it’s also a good place for a stopover. It’s midway between Cambridge and the coast, about an hour from each, and just over that from the ferries to Holland at Harwich. There are plenty of pubs in the neighbouring villages where you can get a good feed before you settle in for a good night’s sleep at Arthur’s  Retreat.

At Arthur's Retreat, we offer spacious hardstanding pitches measuring 6x8 metres, equipped with both electric and drinking water connections for your convenience. Upon arrival at Arthur's Retreat, you will be impressed by the tranquil surroundings and peaceful ambiance. With nine hardstanding pitches available for caravans and motorhomes, you will enjoy a more secluded and private experience, perfect for a restful stay. Each pitch is equipped with a drinking water tap, ensuring that you don't have to go far for fresh water. Additionally, electric hookups are available for an additional fee.

Arthur's Retreat Suffolk
Just what we needed
We liked that the pitches were well spaced, and we had plenty of room outside our unit on the grassed area. The lake is very pretty, makes a nice feature. We especially liked the value-for-money price, and the fact that EHU was included and a water tap close by each pitch. The bonus ball was the free 5G wi-fi!

Arthur's Retreat Suffolk
We stayed for two nights and had a great time at Arthur's retreat. We liked the hardstanding pitches with just the right level of services, keeping it all very lowkey. Lovely views overlooking fields and a small lake, with plenty of nearby places to visit. Great for people who are self sufficient who enjoy lovely sunsets, spotting birds and barbecues. Thank you Hollie, we will visit again!

Arthur's Retreat Suffolk
Perfect weekend getaway, good communication, nice wide hard standing pitches, good value for money, didn’t need anything else, nice pond to sit by when it warms up a bit, we walked to the Blue Boar pub in the next village which was lovely. I would recommend the site and will be returning at some point

Nearby attractions

Arthur’s Retreat is situated in the village of Hepworth. There are walks and horseriding available in the nearby countryside and more of both at Thetford Forest which is less than 10 miles away. It also offers cycle tracks and bike hire, if you have not brought your own, and there’s a Go Ape treetop adventure experience too. Suffolk Wildlife Trust’s Knettishall Heath is just six miles away, Bressingham Steam and Gardens is nine miles from site and Banham Zoo is about 12 miles away. Bury St Edmunds with its ruined abbey, impressive cathedral and shops is 10 miles with the 18th-century Ickworth House and gardens just a few miles beyond it. The market town of Diss is also about 10 miles away with lots of historic buildings and a small museum.

Food and drink

There’s no pub in the village of Hepworth where you’ll find Arthur’s Retreat but there are plenty in the surrounding villages. Try The Blue Boar Inn, which also has a tea room, in Walsham le Willows if you have a dog or kids in tow. It is pet friendly and has a beer garden and kid’s play area – plus a menu of good pub grub. There’s also The Cock Inn at Stanton (two miles) where you’ll also find the closest grocery shop, The Mill Inn at Market Weston (three miles) and The White Horse in Thelnatham (four miles); all of which do food. Diss (10 miles) is the place to head for if you’re after local produce as there’s a market on Fridays as well as a good delicatessen and a number of independent shops and eateries. There are also plenty of places to eat out in Bury St Edmunds.
