Glamping on a family farm in Sussex, just off the South Downs Way and not far from Brighton

As one of the UK’s national parks, the South Downs is touted as “one of Britain’s breathing spaces”. And for people living in London and the South East, it’s the easiest one to get to for a healthy lungful of officially-recognised fresh air. It’s also host to the South Downs Way, one of the most manageable and accessible national trails, perfect for hilltop walks with fantastic views of countryside and sea. It’s at the heart of the national park and a short walk off the trail that you’ll find Foot of the Downs, a glamping site with a trio of timbered cabins for self-catering stays on a family farm.

Whether you’re walking solo on the South Downs Way and need a place to rest for the night or want a family weekend in the countryside, this site on the edge of the village of Fulking works. It is home to a single shepherd’s hut, that sleeps two, and a pair of curved glamping pods which sleep up to four. Each of them is named after a bird whose presence in this Sussex landscape is encouraged by a focus on farming for biodiversity; lapwing, nightingale and skylark.

The accommodation here is fully self-contained with a kitchenette and an en-suite WC and shower room. Beds are made and a little welcome hamper means you’ll have what you need to make a cup of tea on arrival. Better still, especially if you’re walking here, you can pre-order barbecue and breakfast hampers, a fire pit and logs. And if you don’t fancy cooking? There’s a great pub, The Shepherd and Dog, a short walk down the road.

As the name of the place suggests, the view is of the rolling downs and the Sussex countryside they sit in. It’s pleasant enough from down here at the foot of the hills but use the local footpaths to get atop them and you’ll find yourself at one of the national park’s most legendary viewpoints; Devil’s Dyke. From this lofty position, you can watch paragliders take to the skies and see all the way to bustling Brighton and its beaches, just ten miles down the road.

Skylark Pod
A great weekend in the South Downs
We spent the weekend in the Foot if the Down's Skylard pod. The pod itself had everything we needed: From kitchen utensils to linens and towels. There were biscuits, tea and coffee as a welcome gift. Walking around the farm was relaxing, with very nice views. Would very much recommend it!

Contactless check in worked well. The accomodation was really beautiful, clean and well equipped. We ordered additional breakfast and it was lovely presented in the room on our arrival. The bed is very comfy. Nice view from outside the pod and morning sun at the outside seating area. It is in a very quiet area. We absolutely loved our stay.

We are a family owned farm situated in the picturesque village of Fulking, in the heart of the South Downs National Park. Nestled at the foot of the downs, just outside Fulking, West Sussex is our shepherds hut and luxury camping pods, the accommodation is situated on our family working farm for a truly rural South Downs glamping experience. Our accommodation is fully equipped for self catering and open all year round.
Nearby attractions

The south coast at Brighton is nine miles away. Its famous shingle beach, Palace Pier and Brighton Pavilion, the independent shops of The Lanes, galleries, amusements, attractions ad eateries make for a great day out. The seafront promenades at Hove and Shoreham are also great for a stroll. For a longer walk, head straight up the hill on to The South Downs Way, a 100-mile national trail along the chalk escarpments and ridges of the south downs, with beautiful scenery along the way. The campsite and the trail fall within the South Downs National Park and the trail is great for cyclists and horse riders too. Beyond Fulking, where the campsite is, the nearby villages of Henfield, Hurstpierpoint and Steyning, each a drive of about 15 minutes, are lovely places to visit. Kids will like tractor rides and the chance to meet the animals at Washbrooks Farm park (01273 832201) and Sharky’s Soft Play (01273 494984) offers a great rainy-day activity for younger children.

Food and drink

There are a number of pubs and cafes within walking distance of the campsite, including The Shepherd & Dog pub (01273 857382), a very short walk away. For a longer, more challenging walk, head up on to the downs and to the Devils Dyke pub (01273 857256), about two miles away. Or, to stay on more level ground, head for The Royal Oak Pub (01273 857389) in Poynings, about a 30-minute walk across country or to Tottington Manor (01903 815757) a little further in the opposite direction, through fields and woods. Another recommended option if you're out for a walk on the South Downs Way is Cadence Cycle Hub cafe at Truleigh Hill.
