Camping for grown ups with views of Snowdonia and the sea

Ysgubor Wen Eco Camping is a gem of a campsite between the mountains of Snowdonia and the sea. And you don’t need to take our word for it either. It was actually some of the site’s first Hipcampers who called it a gem—just check out the glowing reviews. But we couldn’t put it better ourselves. This place really is a gem for couples and solo campers who like to be surrounded by nature rather than neighbours when they’re staying under canvas. If you have kids or a caravan in tow, however, you’ll have to go elsewhere as this place is reserved for tents and adults only.

It’s also designed to appeal to those who don’t mind going back to basics. Each of the site’s nine pitches are off grid and tucked away among the trees or long meadow grasses of a private five-acre nature reserve. And despite the generous ratio of space per camper; pitch sizes are kept sustainably small. Here, campers are asked to respect the on-going conservation project—the work of 30 years. That means pitching small tents to fit in among the trees and grass and scrub rather than taming the wild to make way for larger tents. The eco-friendly ethos is carried through to the facilities which are also designed to be low impact; two compost loos, a simple washing-up sink and no showers.

Pitches here are far from uniform, each has its own character and different views. Some offer a window on what you can do around here. Tree Pitch One, for example, has views of both Snowdon and the sea. The mountain, should you wish to follow the well-trodden paths to the summit, is ten miles west of here. And, of course, there are plenty of other climbs, walks and sightseeing options within Snowdonia National Park, whose edge is five short miles away. The sea is even closer. The location of this wild-ish campsite is at the top of the lovely Llŷn Peninsula and the closest beach, a pebble one, is just a mile away. A sandy one is 10 minutes’ drive and the town of Caernarfon with its castle is not much further than that.

Meadow pitch 4
Beautiful campsite!
Absolutely gorgeous little campsite! Whichever way you looked there was fantastic views - framed perfectly by the wild meadow we camped in! Every pitch is so private as well, you really feel like you're out in the wild, but with the comfort of amenities like the toilets and running water (the toilets are wonderful - so clean and plenty of loo roll - first time using a composting toilet so didn't know what to expect but it was great!) It's very much a place you can come to switch off from the outside world and just be in the fresh air. Host Jane & Mike were absolutely wonderful and accomodating- the pack of firewood we bought from them was excellent and including all the bits to make a fire (fire lighters, kindling and logs) which was great because we had forgotten our fire lighters! This place is perfect for couples or solo campers - I would have felt really safe there if I was on my own! They have wheel barrows to help carry your stuff from the car which is great and such a good touch! Thank you so much for a lovely couple of days!

Perfect place to feel close to nature. Bats were flying across the field next to our tent in the evening! Pitch was private and had a very practical fire pit. Jane is very friendly and helpful. We ll be back!

Peace and Privacy
We had a fantastic time at Ysgubor Wen Eco campsite starting with a warm welcome from Jane. The views are amazing, but that's Wales for you. It's the details that make the difference: fresh flowers in the immaculate compost loos, perfectly thought out washing up area, beautifully mown paths through the swaying meadows. Our pitch had a mix of tree shelter and open view - necessary as we had both a thunderstorm and heat in the week we stayed. It's beautifully quiet, or rather the noises are all welcome: birdsong, distant sounds of dogs working with the sheep, breeze in the leaves. The space is managed well and each pitch is secluded, meaning there's genuine privacy that adds to the sense of freedom.

This exclusive adults only 5 acre site was created nearly 30 years ago as a private nature reserve and is a haven for wildlife, having been managed with conservation at the forefront. The site is a mixture of meadows and small managed woodland. This site is perfect for those wanting a quiet, nearly wild camping experience, to truly get back to nature and with very limited light pollution for those amazing big, starry night skies. Ideal for bird watchers and nature lovers. The site has panoramic views of Snowdonia National Park, Snowdon Mountain, surrounding countryside and the sea. All the 9 pitches are private, either cut into the meadows or tucked into the trees. We provide 2 compost toilets and a washing up area. The site operates a no car policy, parking is at the entrance, with wheelbarrows available for camping equipment. Within a mile from the beach, less than 10 miles from the historic castle town of Caernarfon and the Llyn Peninsula. Within easy reach of Snowdonia National Park, forest and mountain walks, climbing, cycle path network and beach activities. Nearby attractions

Ysgubor Wen Eco Camping is about a mile’s walk from the closest beach at Aberdesach, slightly further if you drive. There are plenty more within a short driving distance including Dinas Dinlle where there’s a large expanse of sand, a good cafe and fish and chips. The campsite is at the top of the Llŷn Peninsula and the Welsh Coastal Path offers great coastal walking too. The impressive, medieval Caernarfon Castle is 10 miles up the coast and worth a visit with the surrounding town offering plenty of shops and eateries. Inland, it’s just five or so miles until the edge of Snowdonia National Park with the base of Snowdon about 10 miles from the campsite. The closest launching route, if you want to climb to its summit, is the Rhyd Ddu path but there are lots of other hiking routes to try if you want to walk a less trodden path. And, if you don’t fancy the walk anyway, there’s always the Snowdon Mountain Railway, one of several to choose from for a relaxed way to see the scenery. Climbing, zip-lining, white water rafting, and all manner of other adventurous options are also on offer in the park with surfing, swimming, watersports and wildlife watching available on the coast.

Food and drink

The Ty'n Llan, a community-owned pub in Llandwrog four miles away, is open Wednesdays to Sundays and serves food. For breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea there’s Pant Du cafe, three miles away, just outside Penygroes. It’s on the site of an orchard and vineyard and on summer weekends, you can join a guided tour and tasting (book in advance). Also in Penygroes is recommended cafe, Yr Osaf. If you’re spending the day on the beach at lovely Dinas Dinlle, try lunch at Braf or The Surfer Chippy for fish and chips.
