A dog-friendly shepherd’s hut with a hot tub, set on a 26-acre Welsh farm 20 miles from Cardigan Bay

“You do occasionally see a tractor driving past,” explains The Three Spaniels’ owner Miranda apologetically. “And you can see a house.” She’s right; you can – if you squint and look really, really hard among the glorious Welsh countryside that spreads out in front of the site’s lone shepherd’s hut. Beyond the little fenced garden and past the field grazed by Miranda’s beloved horse, Rufus, you might just about spot the chimney pot of a cottage half a mile down the valley. For most glamping guests though, this level of what passes for traffic and urbanisation in West Wales, keeps the place just the right side of remote.

Having said that, although there’s just the one shepherd’s hut on this new site for the moment, you are not completely isolated. The Three Spaniels is Miranda and husband Dave’s pet project and they’ve parked the hut up in a sheltered position that’s not too far from the house they live in on their 26-acre farm. You’ll share this ample space with them, their spaniels (of course), chickens, horses and the sheep which graze on site. A hedge separates you from the farm buildings and ensures privacy but you are never too far away if you want to ask this enthusiastic couple for local information.

Before moving here, Dave and Miranda had been holidaying in Wales for years. They’ve canoed, coasteered and caravanned all around the area so they’re well equipped to point you in the right direction. They can tell you where to eat fish and chips with a chance of seeing dolphins (New Quay), where to find some challenging MTB routes (Brechfa Forest) and where to go for a decent Sunday roast (The Gwarcefal in Prengwyn). But be warned; although it’s not too far from much that makes Wales such a great destination, it’s not close either. The nearest shop is four miles away, the nearest place to paddle out in to the River Teifi – a further eight and the coast – a 20-minute drive.

If you don’t fancy exploiting the surprisingly easy connections, The Three Spaniels works just as well as a retreat. Couples can cosy up in the self-contained shepherd’s hut which has its own shower and loo as well as a seating area which converts in to a double bed. The underfloor heating, heated towel rail and simple kitchenette make winter stays just as appealing as summer ones when you can take advantage of the garden, barbecue and a beautiful, bubbling hot tub where you can soak away the evening hours. A brazier for campfires means stargazing is a year-round on-site activity along with walking the dog in the extensive grounds. With a name like The Three Spaniels, you might have guessed that at this glamping getaway, dogs are welcome too.

Our hut has underfloor heating, ensuite shower room with electric shower and flushing, plumbed in toilet; the kitchenette has a two ring electric hob, toaster, kettle, cutlery and crockery, pots and pans for two; tea, coffee and sugar. There's a full size under counter refrigerator and the dining area converts to a cosy double bed. Duvet, pillows, bed linen, bath towels and tea towels are all supplied. Outside the hut is enclosed in a small garden to keep your pets in and our pets out, but guests are welcome to wander around our woods and meadows or simply put your feet up on the comfy sunloungers and enjoy the birdsong. There's a barbecue and picnic table in the garden too.

Three Spaniels Glamping
Friendly and restful
I have never had such a peaceful and restful holiday. I needed a break from the busyness of life and that’s exactly what I got. A previous review summed it up well when they said it was the right side of remote. The shepherds hut was lovely and the setting idyllic. The private hot tub was a real luxury and really added to the restful nature of my holiday. Miri and Dave were lovely, friendly hosts - so welcoming and accommodating. So good to find such a welcoming dog friendly place. My dog and I will definitely be going back!

Three Spaniels Glamping
Had a fantastic three night break. Miri and Dave were brilliant hosts and very informative of the local area. They truly are living the dream! Hut was small but comfortable the addition of the hot tub was an added bonus. Took advantage of the land with plenty of morning walks made better by the glorious weather we had. Missing our doggie friends, Muphy, Woody and not forgetting Goose! Thanks for a lovely break. Clive, Jan and Duggee.

Three Spaniels Glamping
We have just returned from a wonderful 3 night stay at the Three Spaniels and have already booked to return next year. Top class hosts who are very welcoming and friendly but are not in any way intrusive either. The hut is beautifully appointed and the hot tub is just an added bonus as are the resident dogs and other animals. Lovely spot and the on-site pub is perfect and well stocked. So nice to find somewhere where are two spaniels felt so at home. Can't wait to see the farm in Summer as I can only imagine it will be even better! Thanks Dave and Miri and see you soon xx

Three Spaniels Glamping
This is a fantastic place. We spent 4 nights here last week and thoroughly enjoyed it. The hut is in a lovely location and had everything we needed. The layout has been well thought through and is very cosy. It was great to spend a day in the surrounding area then come back and lounge in the hot tub with a drink. Miri and Dave are great hosts. They were very welcoming and made sure we had everything we needed. They have made The Shepherd's Hut a place you can look forward to staying in.

The pictures underestimate the wonderfulness of this place. We stayed for 3 nights and it was everything we wanted and needed. The accommodation is almost perfect, everything has been thought through, even had freshly cooked biscuits on arrival. The surroundings are tranquil, stunning views and the night sky is a feast for your eyes! . The hot tub is a really lovely addition, it's all so clean and well maintained. Dave and Miri are kind, caring and considerate. Highly recommend staying here.

Situated in a stunning, rural location, our shepherd's hut is nestled in the peaceful Ceredigion countryside in West Wales. Our hand-made shepherd's hut is luxuriously kitted out with en-suite shower room, kitchenette; and underfloor heating. Outside you have your own fenced garden area (dog-friendly) and rural views. Feel free to roam our 26 acres, enjoy the wildlife and star-gaze in the unpolluted night skies. Our shepherd's hut has everything you need for a perfect 'get away from it all' glamping holiday. It's bright and airy, with lovely character features. Most importantly it is comfy and warm, with underfloor heating. It is south facing with lovely rural views and an enclosed garden, where you'll find a luxury hot tub ready and waiting. With water temperature set at a soothing 37 degrees, there's no better way to relax after a hard day's adventuring. The jets have two speeds too for an intense massage to bubble away any aches and pains, or choose the lower speed and sit back to soak up the peace and tranquility of the Welsh hills around you. During the first lockdown we turned one end of our gorgeous old stone barn into a bar area for us and our guests to enjoy. We used old scaffold boards to create the bar area and to insulate the walls. The boards were also used to raise the floor and we insulated beneath with sheep's’ wool, there’s plenty of that around these parts!! The fun part was gathering few quirky bits and pieces from our lives past and present to decorate and create what we hope to be a cosy and inviting atmosphere. If you’re unlucky with the weather during your stay the bar is a great alternative space to relax and maybe chuck a few darts. Or if the sun’s shining, enjoy the lovely sheltered garden. So if you fancy a game of cards, sharing traveller’s tales over a pint or simply cwtching up on the sofawith a good book, the bar will ready and waiting for you. Wildlife and conservation are important to us here at The Three Spaniels and we are keen to encourage all manner of flora and fauna to thrive; to that end we are in the process of planting more native trees, restoring our hedgerows and planting patches of wildflowers wherever possible.
Nearby attractions

The Three Spaniels site has a small woodland and meadow with a stream at the boundary line which guests are welcome to explore. Beyond the site boundaries, the River Teifi is a great place for walks, wildlife spotting and canoeing. The area is also a great place for mountain biking and horse-riding. Brechfa Forest is about 14 miles down the road and has plenty of walking, horseriding and mountain biking trails. The site is about 20 minutes from the coast at Cardigan Bay. Head for the closest beach at New Quay (12 miles away) to join a dolphin, seal and birdwatching boat trip, or explore the pretty seaside villages of Llangrannog, Tresaith and Aberporth a few miles south. You can join the Wales Coast Path for challenging walks or go coasteering, paddleboarding, kayaking or surfing.

Food and drink

The closest pubs are a 4-mile drive away in Llanybydder but Dave and Miranda recommend heading a little further to the little village of Prengwyn and The Gwarcefal Arms. Their favourites also include seaside pubs The Black Lion (01545 560122) in New Quay and The Ship Inn at Llangrannog (01239 654510), both a drive of around 30 minutes. Another recommended pub is Penllwyndu (‘The Pen’ to locals – 01239 682533), about 20 miles away. A little closer to site is Lampeter, 7 miles away, with a number of places to eat and drink. The dog-friendly vintage-style Granny’s Kitchen (01570 421667) gets the thumbs up from David and Miranda. Newcastle Emlyn, 12 miles away, also has a choice of restaurants and cafés including the recommended Harrison’s (01239 711814) and The Riverside Café (01239 710404). The Plwmp Tart (01239 758100) at Penbryn Beach, 16 miles from site, is also recommended as a place to refuel after a walk.
