A charming site with a focus on wildlife in the heart of Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.

Wake up, walk 12 minutes for a dip in the sea, then head back up the lane for a hot shower while looking out at the trees beyond. After sneaking a peek at the birdlife from the on-site hide, how about cooking your breakfast in your own kitchen shelter then washing up while watching butterflies? Sound like campsite life as you know it? Perhaps not. But that can change by booking a stay at The Hide. This small camping and glamping site, on the Pembrokeshire coast, offers a healthy dose of nature and the kind of facilities you may have wished for on previous camping holidays.

There’s a bird hide overlooking feeders in the car park and a butterfly feeder close to the washing-up sink as well as a wildlife pond. This off-grid site is proud to be members of the Greener Camping Club, which only certifies sites that can prove their eco-friendly credentials. But thankfully these days, being green does not mean you have to go without and, here, at The Hide that point is happily proven.

There are five camping pitches in one shrub and tree-lined field, two glamping bell tents in the one next door and in an adjacent field we have two pitches available for campervans. Each premium pitch and bell tent has its own private composting toilet, hot Alfresco shower, kitchen shelter, picnic bench and campfire with BBQ grill. Our standard camping and campervan pitches are provided with their own picnic bench and private campfire with BBQ grill and are only a short walk away from our shared facilities. The bell tents, named after native bats which are seen in the area, are kitted out with made-up beds, soft furnishings, cooking kit – and just about everything you’ll need, except for the towels you’ll want for your morning swims.

The camping fields are sheltered by greenery and, while there’s a sea glimpse here and there, the best views are from a picnic area in a neighbouring field. The closest place to actually reach the beach is just down the road. Continue along the coast and you’ll soon reach the next beach at Pwllgwaelod, where The Old Sailors pub offers a tempting place to refuel on coastal walks. The site lies between Fishguard and Newport on the north Pembrokeshire coast, within the national park. It’s a handy spot for exploring the many things that recommend holidays here. There are the scenic walks, beautiful beaches, family-friendly attractions and adventurous activities but there’s one type of attraction that your hosts will steer you towards more than most; the wildlife. Beyond their own hide, where you can see jays, woodpeckers and even visiting badgers, they’ll tell you about nearby Llangloffan Fen, the Cilgerran Welsh Wildlife Centre and Skomer Island. It’s a 30-mile drive to the launch point for the boat that takes you there – but worth it for the wildlife-loving families and couples who’ll enjoy this site the most.

Sea view campervan pitch
Beautiful site, well maintained by Geraint and Jemma who meet you when you arrive and are very helpful. A lot of love and care has been put into their site - the pitches are well-spaced and facilities are practical and eco-friendly. Great site and great people.

Meadow Grass Pitch
5 stars
The best campsite ever! If you are thinking about staying here - just do it! Felt really welcomed, got shown to the pitch, some recommendations for local things to do. Absolutely beautiful location with multiple view points down to the sea, and a short walk down to a peaceful secluded beach. Amazing facilities - washing up area, compost toilets, hot outdoor showers, recycling, ash disposal. They've thought of absolutely everything and have even gone the extra mile with an honesty box where you can purchase all sorts of goodies and with fresh herbs available. We didn't get a pitch with the individual facilities but would be valuable when the weather isn't as good to be able to cook under shelter.

Geodome
We loved our stay at the The Hide. The bell tent and private kitchen are well equipped. It's private, with plenty of room for kids to play and walking distance to the beach. Excellent, would definitely recommend for families!

Glamping at the Hide with a friend
Really enjoyed our stay in the Dorbenton tent. The Hide is a quiet, pretty spot and a good base to explore from. The views are lovely although we couldn't see the sea from our pitch. Had some lovely swims in the sea from the Aberbach beach as well. If I have one grumble it's that the sofa beds were really uncomfortable and not suitable for an adult to get a good night's sleep on. As we weren't a couple one of us had to sleep on it and it would have been better to have had two proper single beds that could be pushed together if wanted instead of one double. Also would have loved a little fridge but we managed with the cool blocks that wre kindly provided every day.

Bell Tent 1
It was a beautiful site - absolutely perfect and so peaceful. I can't think of anyway it could have been improved - Geraint and Gemma were extremely accomodating and are clearly passionate about the concept of 'greener camping'. The tent was glamour itself and the views were unsurpassable. A wonderful experience!

Wildlife and nature is at the forefront of our minds here at The Hide. We're proud to be a Greener Camping Club site, known for its eco-friendly and low-impact camping holidays. We're an off-grid , non-electric site, offering you the chance to fully immerse yourself in nature. By day, you can relax and unwind surrounded by the fresh sea air, and clear blue skies. By night, enjoy stargazing with very little light pollution, whilst sitting around your cosy campfire. You will find us surrounded by tall trees, stunning sea views, and our very own bird hide, set down a quiet lane within the heart of Pembrokeshire. Our wooded area opens out into a peaceful field of just a small handful of spacious pitches. Our two glamping Geodomes are situated in a field of their own but private from each other and our campervan pitches are in a field overlooking stunning sea views of Fishguard Bay. The beach is minutes away on foot, and local amenities, a five minute drive. The Hide truly is nature's hidden gem. Our site is situated on agricultural land. Our aim is to return as much of the natural wild as possible. We are re-wilding aspects of the site by planting new trees and installing a wildlife pond. (Due to the fact that we have put in a new wildlife pond on our campsite, please ensure all children are supervised at all times.) We are also leaving parts of our site to grow wild as well as planting wildflowers and other plants and shrubs to attract nature in. Future plans include a wildflower meadow, a lavender field, and of course, more bird hides!
Nearby attractions

There's a bird hide overlooking bird feeders situated in the wooded area just above the car park. For more wildlife, head to the Cilgerran Welsh Wildlife Centre (01239 621600), 30 minutes' drive (17 miles) away and set on a nature reserve with an outstanding cafe or to the closer-by Llangloffan Fen, just 15 miles away. Both are owned by the Welsh Wildlife Trust as is Skomer Island. The launching place for boat trips to the island, which is famed for being a puffin paradise but also home to Atlantic grey seal, razorbills, gannets, fulmars and manx shearwaters, is about an hour away. Booking online in advance is necessary. All this is within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park with stunning beaches and great walking all available. The Pembrokeshire Coast National Trail passes close by and the closest beach, Aberbach, is a ten-minute walk down the lane. Family attractions within a 50-minute drive of site include Folly Farm (01834 812731), The Dinosaur Park (01834 845272), Anna Ryder-Richardson's Manor Wildlife Park (0164 665 1201), Oakwood Theme Park and Heatherton World of Activities (01646 652000).

Food and drink

You can walk from The Hide to Pwllgwaelod along the coast in around half an hour to reach The Old Sailors (01348 811486) pub where food is served (ring ahead to check opening hours). Fishguard is under three miles from the campsite and handy for supermarkets and takeaways but, for a recommended meal out, head to The Golden Lion (01239 820 321) in Newport or, for something special, to the lovely Llys Meddyg (01239 820008) restaurant which comes highly recommended by your hosts. The town, which is five miles from The Hide, also has cafes, ice cream huts, a grocery shop and a produce market on Monday mornings.
