An impeccably crafted shepherd's hut and a floating glamping cabin, set in scenic farmland just beyond the Daugleddau Estuary

A mile and a half east of Lawrenny in Pembrokeshire, newly opened Dragonfly Camping is home to some suitably quirky glamping accommodation. It’s befitting for the area. This is, after all, the most sheltered stretch of the coast, where the long, deep river estuary – Cleddau Ddu – is populated with sailing dinghies, kayaks and tiny tending rowboats that to and fro from yachts. In summer Lawrenny Quay is abuzz with folks in deck shoes and buoyancy aids. So, along with Dragonfly’s resplendent shepherd’s hut, where better to stay nearby than in a floating, boating, buoyant glamping home?

Set on a small lake on 300-acre Little Pencoed Farm, the Kingfisher Housboat is safe from the ebb and flow of the tidal estuary and, instead, stays remarkably still on its calm, quiet waters. Nevertheless, the home gently shifts as you step aboard, reminding you that this is very much a floating abode, while the exterior decking means, on a sunny day, you can jump straight into the lake for a swim. Inside, the floating cabin is all exposed pinewood and timber finish. There’s a master bedroom (with a king-sized bed), a bathroom and an open plan living space with a modern kitchen and a sofa bed for two more campers. It’s luxury living, just with water on every side.

Back on terra ferma the Kingfisher is accompanied by a second luxury dwelling, a two-person shepherd’s hut, built by local craftsmen. The attention to detail is superb. An inbuilt double bed is supremely comfortable, cocooned at one end of the hut, while a stove warms the entire vessel and a beautiful (and vast) copper basin provides a rustic sink in the kitchen space (worthy of a fancy farmhouse). Space inside has been cheated by adding an extra, up-cycled horsebox next door – it houses an off-grid bathroom with a gas-powered hot shower and allows for extra room inside the hut itself. There’s even space to pitch an extra tent outside, too, if you fancy bringing a few more people along, though proper tent campers should head to Dragonfly's sister campsite run by the same family, Dragonfly Woodland Camping in the trees just a short stroll away.

It’s a half hour walk into Lawrenny village, home to all the traditional essentials – a shop, cricket club and 12th century church. It’s a little further down to the quay where the boat club is neighboured by a popular tearooms. The garden there makes for a great place to have a cuppa before or after walking a stretch of the waterside footpath, which takes you through the trees of National Trust-owned Cleddau Woodlands. The trail is a part of the longer and renowned Pembrokeshire Coast Path, while the endless popular beaches of the county are all within easy driving distance too.

Dragonfly
Solo shepherd hunter!
I honestly couldn't find fault with this slice of heaven. A wonderful location, very private. I stayed here by myself for most of the break and felt relaxed and safe. The Shepard's hut is warm, with everything you would need. The bed is very comfortable. Along with the Shepard's hut there is a separate converted horse box as your personal washroom (with flushing toilet). There is a picnic table on a large area of mown grass and separately a fire pit with bench seating. There is also a bush bath. Wood for all fires is inclusive. All off grid but with a gas cooker, refrigerator, led lighting and charging points for tec items.. You really wouldn't know it! I had a query on my first night and received a very prompt reply. I found it so lovely I extended my stay by two days. Thank you so much Nicola and Jacob, I would love to come back!

Kingfisher Floating House
It is stunning. If you value peace and quiet, and need some headspace, this is the place to stay. We saw owls, young squirrels playing, countless birds and dragonflies. It was cold outside, but snug inside with the log burner, and the sunsets were incredible.

An ideal romantic retreat for couples but can sleep up to 4 on a sofa bed.
Nearby attractions
Dragonfly Camping is within walking distance of the Cleddau Estuary. The ancient woodlands that overhand the edges of the creeks are a treat for family walks – there’s a short, spell-binding trail through Lawrenny Woods, starting at the boatyard on the Quay. Holly and Rowan trees grow beneath the canopy and there’s wood rush, heather and bilberry carpeting the ground. Little Milford Woods, meanwhile, is owned by The National Trust and borders the village of Hook. For an interesting walk, go down to the bottom of Pill Road and take the old miners' drove road over to Lower Quay Road. You can access the waterside here if you are fit and have good boots. Dragonfly Camping is also within 15 minute's drive of several blue flag beaches and the historic towns of Tenby and Pembroke (each with a castle). Manorbier Castle (01834 871394) is also worth a visit – a well-preserved 12th century gatehouse where life-size wax figures in costume are dotted about the place. From the turret windows you get great views down to Manorbier’s surfer friendly beach. For families, Manor House Wildlife Park (01646 651201) is decent – kids love getting up close and personal with the Lemurs, Wallaby's and Meerkats; youngsters are also invited to help feed the goats and sheep.
Food and drink
Strike out on foot for a pint at Cresswell Quay (01646 651210) or a short drive will take you to the Lawrenny Arms (01646 651367) or Lawrenny's Quayside Tearooms (01646 651574) for locally sourced food. Further afield, the award winning Café Môr (07422 535345), a seafood shack based at Freshwater West beach, is well worth a stop or head into Tenby for a wide variety of good restaurants and pubs.
