A back-to-basics campsite with views of mountains and sea on the Llŷn Peninsula

The nine off-grid pitches at Bryn Ifan are mowed into the long grass of a wildflower meadow in a pleasing pattern that’s reminiscent of a crop circle. From each of them, there are views of mountains and rolling countryside all the way to the sea. This is the Llŷn Peninsula, so there’s plenty of each of those and all within easy reach. The beach is 15 minutes' drive away, the highest mountains in Wales are half an hour by car, and the countryside stretches in all directions. In fact, that countryside is all there is in the near vicinity, so you can also expect dark and starry skies while you sit round the campfire at night.

The site’s outstanding views reveal themselves as you make your way from the farmyard car park to your pitch with gear loaded into wheelbarrows. This is a car-free, tents-only camping field which makes it particularly peaceful and perfect for family camping. Kids are easily entertained by the freedom of running around the wildflower-lined pathways and clambering about on tractor tyres.

With rustic but lovely toilets and showers, this small site advertises back to basics camping. We won’t argue with that description but the on-site Campers’ Barn adds a few facilities that make it a back-to-basics site you can stay at for more than a few days. A communal fridge/freezer, undercover washing-up, and indoor eating space make sure of that. And the function sits alongside the fun of table tennis, table football, and air hockey which keep everyone entertained if shelter or shade are needed.

But one of the best assets of all are this site’s lovely owners, Callie and Gwynn. They are hands on and on hand to sell you logs or set you off on local adventures. The one you won’t want to miss is the pleasant hike up Bwlch Mawr, the twin-peaked hill that’s ever present in your views and which has been recently acquired by the North Wales Wildlife Trust. And then of course, there’s the beach. You wouldn’t be on the Llŷn Peninsula if you weren’t interested in that. The closest to here is Dinas Dinlle but nowhere on the peninsula is too far to visit from this site with views of mountains and sea.

Large grass tent only camping pitches in our meadow. All with fantastic views of the sea and mountains. Easy access to the toilets and showers. - Pitch for 1 large tent or 2 small tents (max 5 person per pitch). - Free hot showers - Communal camping freezer for ice blocks for your cooler. - All soaps, washing up liquid, shampoos and conditioner. - No dogs allowed, no groups, no smoking or vaping.

Meadow Camping
Special spot twixt mountains & sea
Bryn Ifan is a natural hideaway with fantastic views of coast and mountains. Excellent showers and toilets with a large barn with fridge, washing up facilities and kettle add up to make this an ideal spot for families or couples. Add in the warm welcome and peaceful setting and you have somewhere truly special on the edge of Snowdonia.

We had an amazing experience
we have spent 4 nights at this amazing and peaceful site. The hosts both human and four legged are welcoming and friendly and take that extra time to ensure your holiday is just perfect 😊 The amenities on the site are clean and tidy. The peaceful countryside was wonderful, my children enjoyed a lot watching beautiful sunsets. The location is great to visit Caernarfon and Portmeirion and to have an amazing walk with your family . We highly recommend this campsite 🌱

Meadow Camping
A hidden gem!
We absolutely loved our stay at Bryn Ifan Camping! Callie and Gwynn were the most welcoming and lovely hosts. The location is simply beautiful, with stunning views of Snowdon and mountains on one side and the sea, beaches and across to Anglesey on the other. The site itself has a boutique feel mixed with wild camping, is creatively designed and extremely clean and well kept. Our boys loved hanging out in the barn, playing table football, table tennis and air hockey, as did we. Our new favourite camping getaway - we can't wait for our next stay and can't recommend highly enough!! Thank you Callie and Gwynn!

Beautiful campsite, excellent facilities with superb hosts. Honestly cannot wait to return. In particular I loved the smell of bracken, sea views, simple access to many spots nearby, the hot outdoor shower and it’s rural location. Thank you again

From the host
Here at Bryn Ifan farm we have 10 mowed tent pitches in our beautiful wild meadow field each with gorgeous views of the sea and surrounding mountains. We are a small, quiet, family friendly eco campsite and you can enjoy the starry skies at night as there is hardly any light pollution here! There is parking for one car per pitch (you can book another car space if you contact us) but the camping field is car free. You can easily transfer your camping gear by wheelbarrow to your pitch. With coastal and mountain walks within 10 minutes drive, there are lots of opportunities for outdoor adventures. Snowdonia National Park and the beautiful sandy beaches of the Llŷn Peninsula are all within easy reach. The mountain behind the camping meadow which you can see in the pictures is Bwlch Mawr. You can walk to the beginning of the path or take a 2 minute drive and hike to the top where you will see fabulous 360 degree views of the coast and surrounding mountain ranges. Explore nearby Caernarfon Castle for the day or go for a ride on the famous Ffestiniog Steam Railway through stunning countryside for a truly unforgettable trip. Our local beach Dinas Dinlle is only a 15 minute drive and you can swim or enjoy a walk with amazing views of the mountains coming right down to the sea.
Nearby attractions

This part of the Llŷn Peninsula is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and you can take it all in with a hike up nearby hill, Bwlch Mawr. Keen walkers can walk straight from site but if you (or your kids) will find the 45-minute walk to the to top enough, drive to the bottom of the route – ask Callie and Gwynn for directions. The closest beach is Dinas Dinlle (six miles) which is good for a swim. It's backed, like all of the coast, by the Wales Coast Path which you can also use for a cliff-top walk to see Trefor Sea Stacks, a little further west (seven miles). There's plenty more walking, bouldering, and climbing opportunities in Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park, the edge of which is also around seven miles away. Snowdon itself is about 20 miles from the site and if you don't fancy the hike to its peak, there's always The Snowdon Mountain Railway. Caernarfon Castle (0300 025 2239) is around a 20-minute drive away and one of the most visually-striking of all the Welsh castles given its position on the banks of the River Seiont. A short walk from the castle, is the Caernarfon station at the end of the Ffestiniog Steam Railway where you can hop aboard a heritage train for a ride through Snowdonia's foothills.

Food and drink

If you're cooking on site, you're in for a treat as the neighbouring permaculture farm, Henbant, has a small shop selling their homegrown organic produce: veggies, fruit, eggs and meat. For more than what's on offer there, head five miles to Penygroes where there's a Co-op supermarket. For brunch, lunch or coffee and cake, try seaside cafe Braf at Dinas Dinlle. For a beachside dinner or takeaway, there's fish and chips nearby from The Surfer Chippy. And for a meal at a pub, try The Goat in Glandwyfach (six miles). It has an extensive pub menu with options for kids too. There's also pizza and other dishes for dinner available in a nice garden setting at nearby campsite, Bert's Kitchen Garden (be sure to book in advance).
