A simple site with campfires, tree swings and hammocks in Dartmoor

There’s a lovely old-school camping vibe at Three Hares Campsite in Dartmoor National Park. It offers grassy pitches for tents and campervans only, facilities are housed in a barn and entertainment comes in the form of a tree swing, a couple of hammocks and hedgerows that groan with blackberries in late summer. There’s also a goose called Gander who helps keep the grass nibbled short. Off site, it’s less than three miles to Castle Drogo, the Teign Gorge and some lovely wild swimming spots.

The campsite occupies a one-acre field that’s surrounded by mature trees and part of a 25-acre smallholding on a former farm. There are just 15 pitches almost equally split between those with electric hook up and those without. If you opt for off grid, you can just choose your spot in the field. If you choose one with electric, you’ll find a board in reception that details where you should pitch or park up. It’s also here that you’ll find a handy fridge/freezer for campers to share, logs to buy, off-ground fire pits to rent and info on the local area.

There are leaflets for that – but the best bits are the handwritten notes on a blackboard that hosts Chinnie and Henry leave for their guests. They detail their favourite wild swimming spots, walks and list a few good local pubs. All are places they like to visit with their own kids and places you and your kids are probably going to love too. But, in truth, topping that list is probably Three Hares Campsite itself. It’s small and friendly: somewhere kids can run about and make friends while adults sit back and relax all surrounded by the wilds of Dartmoor and Devon.

It was a wonderful, relaxing and special one night stop. The walks are endless and after a very hot day I found the site fun and perfect with the kiddies playing and people chatting . I was able to take a wonderful shower and was my dinner things up at the sinks . Chinnie was so welcoming when I arrived and made the start hassle free . Thank you so much for having me and I’ll be back (more walks to do !)

Stream come true
Really peaceful night in our spot down by the stream. Campsite is very clean, has everything and lots of effort has gone into the local info and activities. Would definitely go back.

Three hares campsite is run by Chinnie and Henry. We are a small, family run campsite in Dartmoor National Park, the campsite is 1 acre set on a 25 acre small holding. We offer an eco friendly and secluded camping experience with simple facilities on our working small holding. Our sheltered site is in a secluded valley just outside the historic village of Drewsteignton, an idyllic location from which to explore all that Dartmoor has to offer. From walking the Two Moors Way, hiking the high moors, kayaking down the River Teign to enjoying a traditional Devonshire cream tea, there is always something to do.
Nearby attractions

Three Hares Campsite is on the edge of the village of Drewsteignton in the Teign Valley in the northern part of Dartmoor National Park. It’s less than three miles from the National Trust’s Castle Drogo, which overlooks the dramatic Teign Gorge. You can look around the castle and its garden, enjoy the tea room and go for riverside walks through the wooded gorge below. There are, of course, plenty of places for walking in the national park including on the Two Moors Way – which, at its extremes, links Exmoor with Dartmoor and the south coast of Devon. There are also lots of opportunities for wild swimming including at Salmon Leap near Castle Drogo in the River Teign or at Fingle Bridge (near the pub) or in the River Dart. And if that’s too wild for you, head instead for the open-air pool in the pretty town of Chagford (five miles). Another National Trust site is Finch Foundry (six miles) where you can see how a working forge was run.

Food and drink

Eggs and homegrown veg are sometimes on offer in reception – check in for supplements to your meals but there’s also a good farm shop and butchers, Oinkers, about two miles down the road. It has a cafe on the same site that usually opens in summer. For more than that, head to Chagford (five miles) or to Morehamptonstead (nine miles) for general grocery shops and independents. For a supermarket, head 10 miles to Okehampton. The closest pub is the community-owned Drewe Arms in Drewsteignton itself, about a mile from the campsite. A little further, but still not much more than two miles from Three Hares Campsite, is the Fingle Bridge Inn which is scenically situated on the riverside. In Chagford, there are more pubs including The Three Crowns and The Globe Inn.
