A self-contained shepherd’s hut for two in the Cornish countryside

Some people return to the same campsite in Newquay every year, others swear by a particular hotel in Padstow, or a B&B near Boldeva. But how about something in the middle? Rosie the shepherd’s hut provides just that. She’s a little self-catering cabin in the garden of a B&B on a smallholding between the north and south Cornish coasts. Instead of exploring one particular corner of Cornwall, from here you can see the lot—including the highlights named above. Situated just outside the hamlet of Demelza in central southern Cornwall, you have 360 degrees to explore. You also have lovely views, a charming host, and a super cute shepherd’s hut to stay in.

That charming host is Kim. You park up next to her cottage, where she also offers B&B and a holiday apartment and knock on the back door to let her know you’ve arrived. Then it’s a hop and a skip across the garden, past ducks and chickens, to your secluded little spot behind young fruit trees. The view reveals itself as you arrive: rolling Cornish countryside—Poldark country—towards the north coast and the setting sun. There’s outdoor seating, a barbecue and, from May to September, a hot tub; all designed to help you enjoy this rural spot. Inside, the hut is perfectly proportioned for two with mod cons and just a touch of vintage styling. A double bed, a little kitchenette, and a small en suite are all warmed by underfloor heating. So, yes, there’s electricity and hot water which all adds up to make this hideaway as good in winter as it is in summer. The Smart TV and good WiFi help with that too.

Rosie is permanently parked up 11 miles from the north coast at Mawgan Porth and Watergate Bay on the north Cornish Coast and 11 miles from Charlestown on the south coast. This rural spot is also just five minutes’ drive from the A30 (though you’ll easily forget that when you’re here). It provides an easy route east through Bodmin Moor and west towards Lands End. If you want a taste of everything that’s on offer in Cornwall, this is a great place to be based. But there’s so much to see within easy reach that you might become one of those people who return to the same place year after year.

Rosie is set on a smallholding overlooking a beautiful valley in central North Cornwall. The hut is self-contained and includes a bathroom and kitchen facilities. There is under-floor heating, fridge, microwave and a dining table with two chairs. There is a small balcony and steps leading up to the hut. The outdoor area overlooks the countryside and is the perfect spot to take in the magnificent summer sunsets. It has a picnic table and barbecue. A portable induction hob allows cooking indoors and out. There is an evening outdoor spa area in a nice private area with Lay-Z-Spa hot tub, available from May to September. Relax and enjoy countryside views. There is parking on site with a short walk to the hut.

Shepherd's Hut with valley views
Hut with a view
Really lovely welcome from a top host - unexpected but appreciated cake, tea and coffee, etc, and also fresh eggs and home made jam for a little extra meant beautiful breakfasts. Very cosy and well equipped hut - everything we might have needed was easily to hand. Loved the outdoor spa to relax in at the end of a day's adventuring, watching the sunsets over the hills.

A gem of a find in a quiet, tucked-away part of Cornwall called Demelza, from which the famous Poldark character was named. It is close to both North and South coast beaches and is a cosy farmstay retreat for those with a love and appreciation of the outdoors. Amazing views across a valley, and on a clear night, it's perfect for stargazing. Use of 2-person Lay-Z-Spa from May to September. Please bring an extra towel. The hut is self-contained and includes a small bathroom and kitchen facilities. There is under-floor heating, kitchenette, bathroom, cooking facilities, fridge and the outdoor area is ideal for watching the sunset with a G&T A car is essential. Parking is available on site, but please let me know if more than one car parking space will be required. Car hire available from Newquay Airport. Bike hire available. Evening outdoor spa area with Lay-Z-Spa hot tub, gazebo and solar lights. Countryside views
Nearby attractions

Rosie the shepherd’s hut is situated in the grounds of Demelza Cottage just outside the hamlet of Demelza in central, rural Cornwall. It is 11 miles from the closest north coast beach at Mawgan Porth and 11 miles from the south coast at Charlestown. You can head out on lovely countryside walks from here with The Saints Way, a well signposted footpath which crosses from coast to coast, less than a mile from Demelza Cottage – but a car is necessary for further exploration due to the rural location. There are lots of places on the north coast you may want to visit within an easy drive. In addition to the sandy beach at Mawgan Porth, there’s also Watergate Bay which is popular with surfers. Newquay is a mile or so further with the famous surf scene of Fistral Beach – or head about the same distance further north to visit the harbour town of Padstow. Port Isaac and Polzeath arew also within 30 minutes’ drive. Head south and you can reach the coast beyond St Austell’s. At Charlestown, see tall ships and visit The Shipwreck Museum. At Pentewan, go for a swim. The Eden Project is 10 miles away and The Lost Gardens of Heligan are 15 miles from your hut.

Food and drink

There’s a little homemade and homegrown produce available from the smallholding – including your choice of freshly-laid chicken or duck eggs plus Kim’s jams. For more supplies head for the closest town, Roche, where there’s a well-stocked Co-op. There’s also a few takeaways if you don’t fancy cooking for yourself. For more of that, you could always head to The Lanivet Inn, a  traditional Cornish pub, five miles from site, serving good pub grub. Foodie Padstow is 11 miles from site if you want to try Rick Stein’s famous fish restaurant – or just his fish and chips. There are also great seafood restaurants in Newquay, also on the north coast, and Charlestown on the south coast. Wadebridge is another option that’s about the same distance away.
