A single yurt on a smallholding on the edge of the Forest of Dean

Get a feel for the Forest of Dean with a stay at Oakdean Cottage Yurt. This single off-grid yurt on a smallholding is surrounded by a wildlife-rich woodland offering plenty of opportunities to spot wild boar, foxes, squirrels, and deer. The wood-burning stove and campfire area help to make glamping in a yurt feel like an appropriate way to stay on the edge of this ancient forest. And although it’s rustic with wild surroundings, it’s comfortably domestic too. It’s set up on a steep hillside in a garden setting, overlooking rooftops and Gloucestershire farmland.

The yurt sits on a level deck in this sloping orchard garden and has its own bathroom and kitchen shed with running hot and cold water – and an electricity supply. There’s also a covered dining and cooking area. That’s all the functional stuff but the yurt itself is the interesting bit. It’s as authentic as it gets; crafted by yak herders in Mongolia. The insulation is yak wool and the latticework is held together with strips of yak leather. Inside, there’s a double bed and a double sofa bed, making it as good for families as it is for couples. It’s worth noting, though, that the yurt’s raised platform makes it unsuitable for those with children under three.

You can walk directly from site into the forest and you don’t even have to go that far to see and hear some of its wildlife. Birds, bats, and deer are all sometimes seen in the yurt’s immediate surroundings and just hanging about in the hammocks may be all the advantage you need. A handy walking map is provided in the yurt along with tips on places to eat, drink, and visit. Peaceful Soudley Ponds with the Dean Heritage Centre is a good place to head for, a walkable two miles away. There, you’ll find impressive trees, a good cafe to refuel at and all the information you’ll need to make your trip to the Forest of Dean memorable. Though, having said that, if you’re staying at Oakdean Cottage yurt, we'd say that much is already guaranteed.

Our Mongolian yurt is cut into steep hillside, between plum and hazel trees, with gorgeous views over the valley. A purpose built and self contained shower room and kitchenette is 25 meters away, and a covered picnic shelter and woodland campfire area are just next to the yurt. You have exclusive use of all facilities. You can walk directly into the forest from the yurt, with amazing hillside walks and spectacular views. We are a short distance from Blakeney, which has a shop, chip shop, and pubs, and Soudley which has the Dean Heritage Centre, and the beautiful Soudley ponds. The terrain is steep. There are steps and smooth paths in most areas but please be aware that it may be challenging.

Oakdean Cottage Yurt
A Perfect Hidden Hideaway - 10/10
I recently had the pleasure of staying at the Himalayan Yurt nestled in the heart of the Forest of Dean, and it was truly an unforgettable experience. This yurt is a perfect blend of rustic charm and modern comfort, offering a peaceful retreat in nature without sacrificing convenience. The outdoor area is breath taking, with a beautifully maintained garden complete with hammocks that are perfect for relaxing under the trees. There’s also an outdoor cooking and dining space, making it easy to enjoy meals in the fresh air. The outdoor fire pit/oven are a fantastic touch, ideal for cozy evenings by the fire, making your own wood-fired pizza. Inside, the yurt is both cozy and spacious, with a wood-burning stove that adds warmth and ambiance, especially during cooler nights. The double bed is incredibly comfortable, and there’s a pull-out sofa for extra guests. The thoughtful seating arrangement, including a charming reading bench, provides plenty of space to relax. The décor is unique, full of character, and perfectly complements the natural surroundings. The amenities are also impressive. The attached cottage has a well-equipped kitchen with tea and coffee facilities and a portable gas cooker for indoor meals. The double shower is spacious, with plenty of hot water, and the flushing toilet is a nice luxury, considering the remote setting. Overall, the Himalayan Yurt is a hidden gem and perfect for a peaceful stay surrounded by nature but close enough to The Forest Of Dean.

Idyllic escape
We had a wonderful stay in the Oakdean Cottage yurt! The location was idyllic, looking accross the peaceful valley of woodland and farmland. The yurt and its facilities were beautifully designed with great attention to detail and craftsmanship. We were very lucky with the weather so could fully enjoy the outside life - roasting marshmallows over the fire, relaxing in the hammocks, listening to the wildlife and eating our breakfast outside. We would love to come back to explore this stunning area further - definitely recommend!

The yurt is located in the orchard area of an 1820s smallholding, surrounded by wild woodland and forest, where deer, wild boar, squirrels, woodpeckers, owls and bats are frequent visitors. Everything but the boar are often seen right in the garden of the yurt! On a steep hillside, this provides an elevated position with amazing views over rolling farmland.
Nearby attractions

Oakdean Cottage Yurt, sits on the edge of the Forest of Dean and you can walk directly from site into the trees. A good route is to head up to Bradley Hill from where you can see views of the River Severn. From there you could continue to Soudley Ponds, a lovely place to walk by water and impressively tall Douglas fir trees. Soudley is also where you’ll find the Dean Heritage Centre with exhibitions on the history of the area and a cafe. There’s a chance to get into the trees at Go Ape, Mallards Pike (four miles) and to see the twisted trees and film sets of the ancient forest at Puzzlewood (nine miles). It’s about the same distance to Clearwell Caves where you can glimpse underground via a serious of nine show caves and caverns. Lydney, sometimes called ‘the gateway to the Forest of Dean’ is four miles from site and situated on the River Severn. At Lydney Junction, a station on The Dean Forest Railway, you can hop aboard a steam train for a scenic round trip to Parkend just over four miles away. The Wye Valley and the border with Wales are about half an hour’s drive.

Food and drink

There’s a good cafe at the Dean Heritage Centre, two miles away, in Soudley. If you walk, it’s through the woodland. Or, if you fancy the pub, head in the other direction across fields and down country lanes to Blakeney where you’ll find the King’s Head pub. If you’re wanting to cook on site, all the kit you need is provided, and the closest shops and supermarkets are in Lydney (four miles) and Cinderford (six miles). For a trip out to a pretty market town with plenty of independent shops and delis selling local produce, try Coleford, nine miles away.
