A secluded shepherd’s hut on a farm with views of Aylesbury Vale

Stay in the single shepherd’s hut at Hill View Farm and you are treated to far-reaching views of the Aylesbury Vale. It’s hard to believe the view is all yours. But it is. You don’t have to share this space with anyone. The hut sits in its own little fenced corner of a field on a farm on the Buckinghamshire-Oxfordshire border. It’s a nice bolthole for anyone who wants to getaway on a romantic break or even for a solo stay in rural surroundings. It’s a grown-up place to stay and the days out round here are rather grown up too. There’s Oxford and the Cotswolds, Blenheim Palace and Bletchley Park.

As a base in this part of the world, Hill View Farm’s duck-egg-blue shepherd’s hut offers self-catering stays that are totally comfortable without taking things too far. You’ll have the means to make a cup of tea, for example, but not to watch TV. You have a loo in the hut but the shower is a few steps outside. A log burner keeps the place warm and 12-volt electricity keeps it lit – and also means you can keep devices charged. Here, you don’t go without (beds are made, towels provided and there’s a welcome hamper on arrival) but you are not given luxury that jars with the environment either. The eco-friendly loo and the off-the-mains experience shows a care for the land that’s fitting here on the farm. Dogs are welcome – by pre-arrangement (at an extra charge) and they'll be as happy as you are as the farm is also home to Poundon Pastures, a two-acre secure dog-walking park where they can run around off the lead.

This is just the sort of place that you could come for the weekend to read, play games and relax with good food and drink – all while gazing at that view. But should you want to explore further the options are all as lovely as the vista. There are the honey-stone villages and rolling countryside of the Cotswolds to explore, there’s punting down the river in Oxford and there’s the opportunity to tour the impressive stately homes of the English countryside.

Enjoy peace and quiet in our lovely shepherd hut. There is a king sized bed, 2 easy chairs, table and stools, kitchen area with fridge and 2 ring gas hob, wood burner and compost loo. There is a 12V solar electric system that provides lighting and 12V sockets. Outside there is a hut with a gas powered shower. You can take a shower whilst enjoying the view of the surrounding countryside. Bedding and towels are provided together with a welcome hamper to get you started. We do ask for a minimum 2 night booking. The views from the hut are across the Aylesbury Vale and you can literally see for miles. We do allow 1 small well behaved dog but ask that you contact us about this beforehand and don't just turn up with your pet. There is a secure dog walking park in another field close by so a fun place for your pet to come and have a holiday too! Oxford is close by and can be reached by train from Bicester or Park and Ride Bus. There are a number of National Trust properties to visit together with the Cotswolds and Blenheim Palace a short drive away.

From the host
We have 2 blocks of farm land. One of 125 acres around the farmhouse and buildings. We are situated on the Bucks/Oxfordshire border and have wonderful far reaching views across the surrounding countryside. Our shepherd hut is situated one field away from the house and is completely self sufficient with solar electric 12V system, compost loo and outside shower. It is a beautiful spot to watch the sun go down and survey all around you.
Nearby attractions

Dog-owning glampers are well catered for at Hill View Farm as a dog bed, bowl and towel are provided when you book them in (one dog allowed, at extra cost) and the farm is also home to Poundon Pastures: a two-acre secure dog walking park (£10/session). Hill View is on the border of Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire with Oxford itself, Bletchley Park and Blenheim Palace all about 20 miles from site. Each could make a full day out from here – and the Cotswolds stretch away to the west beyond Blenheim for further adventure. There are plenty of pretty villages to explore with country houses, gardens and pubs along the way. If shopping is on the agenda, the purpose-built Bicester Village is only eight miles away and Stowe Gardens, a National Trust landscape garden, is 11 miles from the farm. Silverstone is just 16 miles from site. Days out to Stratford-upon-Avon and Warwick Castle are also all possible from here too, both within an hour’s drive.

Food and drink

A welcome hamper provides you with a few local goodies for breakfast on your first day in the shepherd’s hut at Hill View Farm. At the time of writing, the closest pub to the farm (within walking distance) The Sow and Pigs in Poundon, was closed. Check directly for up-to-date information. Otherwise, you could try the good food at The Crown in Twyford (two miles), The Red Lion in Stratton Audley (three miles) or one of two pubs in Launton (also three miles): The Bull and The Black Bull. There are plenty of options in Bicester too. For campsite or picnic supplies, the nearest shop is Twyford Village Stores.
