A small, yurt glamping site with treasure hunts and alpacas in the Yorkshire countryside

Do you remember when you were so young that when you hid behind your own hand you thought nobody could see you? Maybe not. What about playing hide ‘n’ seek or building a shelter out of bedsheets and furniture? There’s something intrinsically exciting and magical about creating a world just for yourself, where you can’t be found by others. Greenoak Hideout, as the name suggests, is an enchanting place that allows these childlike feelings to flourish, a place where children (of all ages) are invited to hide away in one of the cosy yurts — the comfortable adult version of bedsheet shelters — and escape the normality of everyday life.

On the surface, this unsuspecting Yorkshire rural garden is a three-and-a-half acre home to a variety of animals and wildlife. However, dig a little deeper and it becomes clear that it is also an enchanting haven that owner Estelle has created for the enjoyment of her family, friends, and especially her grandchildren. The glamping site that it has now become — consisting of a couple of luxury yurts each with its own separate bathroom hut with walk-in shower room — is an expression of Estelle’s desire to share the experience. And the experience is up to you because there are so many add-ons at Greenoak that you can tailor it to suit you and/or your children’s wishes. If you want, you can pre-order a pony ride, you can pre-book a meet ‘n’ mingle with the alpacas, breakfast baskets are on offer, as are seasonal treasure hunts and garden games. If you’d prefer, you can try to discover a hedgehog here or a fox there or collect eggs from the laying hens or see the nesting ducks and their ducklings. And this is all before the sunset and marshmallows around the crackling fire.

There are plenty of things to do and places to go beyond this sanctuary of course; the surrounding countryside is an expansive plain offering big skies and wide views with excellent rambling opportunities, there are nature reserves close by and for days out, the coast and its beaches are reachable in under an hour, so too is the city of York. And the market town of Howden, less than 10 minutes away and notable for its tea rooms, cafes, and independent shops, is a convenient excursion and should be taken advantage of because the alpacas will probably need a break from all the attention.

First time Glamping and impressed!
We absolutely loved our two night stay in the Fox Yurt, I was quite surprised how spacious they are. The beds are really comfy and they kept the heat in quite well at night as the weather had dropped in the evenings. We said hello to the two lovely donkeys and the horse. Unfortunately we didn't get to do the pony ride for our son or see the alpacas as the owners were away. Although my son loved the endless bouncing on the huge trampoline and took quite a shine to the ridealong toy tractor and trailer! The shower and toilet facilities are a very short walk from the Yurt, however I was surprised again at how clean and new they were. We would definitely stay again and bring some friends or family along 😊

Out first yurt!
What a beautiful find! This was our first glamping experience and it didn't disappoint. Lovely decor with amazingly comfortable beds. Access to a BBQ and a fire pit which was perfect for star gazing. The kids loved all the play areas, especially the trampoline and the dogs Scout and Tiggy were very friendly.

A fabulous weekend!
We had a great time. The kids (6 and 4) really enjoyed the space to run around and play; they loved the trampoline, feeding carrots to the donkeys and pony and spending time with the friendly resident dogs. The yurt was lovely - very well equipped and with super comfy beds. Great shower room and the hot tub was a very enjoyable extra. John was a wonderful host who made our stay huge fun. We would highly recommend Greenoak Hideaway.

Our glamping trip
We loved glamping at greenoak hideout, it was perfect for our 5 year old. Lots of outside toys to play on, she loved the trampoline especially! The yurt was lovely and had everything we needed and more. John was a great host and very helpful, lovely inviting family place to visit. We hired the hot tub for Friday evening which was really nice under the stars. Ordered a takeaway from Sam’s kitchen, it was really nice! And we visited the village not too far away called Howden lots of little Coffee shops and a minster to look around, there is also a great play park there too for the kids! We will definitely be back next year. Thanks for having us! 😃

Greenoak Hideout is an idyllic, peaceful getaway in the East Yorkshire countryside with only a short drive to the historic town of York and the Yorkshire coastline. Greenoak Hideout is suitable for couples, friends and family groups. We are proud to cater for everyone and we are sure you will find lots to love here, whoever you are! At Greenoak Hideout you will be staying in an authentic yurt which comes with its own luxury bathroom with toilet, basin and large shower. Mains electricity is provided for your convenience. Each yurt can be set up to sleep from two to five guests with a comfy king size bed, the option of three additional single beds, and a cot or Moses basket available free of charge by request. Our 18ft yurts are not only spacious but beautifully furnished and unique. As well as your own shower room, your yurt has a mini fridge, tea and coffee making facilities, outdoor furniture and a BBQ. You will have use of a fire pit and all the cosy blankets you could wish for. The wood burning stoves included in the winter months make us a perfect, cosy getaway year round. There really is no bad time to stay with us, as the grounds are beautiful in every season. We also have a beautiful bohemian bell tent available seasonally to add on to any yurt booking, for larger parties who need a little extra room. We are a very family friendly site, with lots of entertainment available for our guests. There’s plenty of space for little ones to play, and we have some resident animals including our pony Shandy, and our mum and baby Alpacas. Guests can also enjoy collecting and eating fresh eggs from our lovely hens, and have a go at spotting some local wildlife including deer, hedgehogs and foxes (who we named our yurts after!) We have garden games available to enjoy for free as well as some add ons available including pony and alpaca experiences, and breakfast baskets. We also have a wood fired hot tub that is bookable via email subject to availability and additional fee. Our site is perfect for walkers as we have a number of nature walks and reserves close by, as well as being close by to the town of Howden, which has wonderful cafes, tea rooms, restaurants, pubs and some lovely independent shops. Cyclists can also enjoy the popular Trans Pennine cycle route which passes through the beautiful East Yorkshire scenery with many great places to stop along the way. We are also conveniently situated with easy access to both Hull and York.
Nearby attractions
If it's necessary to emerge from the hideout that is Greenoak, there are plenty of places to explore within easy reach including nature reserves such as Eastrington Ponds (lake fishing, dog-walking, dragon-fly spotting) or the North Cave Wetlands,  which has several lakes and three hides for viewing potentially rare wading birds. The former is a mere five-minute drive north while the wetlands are a fraction further to the east on the outskirts of the village of North Cave. For families with young children the adventure park, William's Den (01430 472230), is just seven miles away. And in Hull, slightly over 30 minutes away, The Deep (01482 381000) is one of the most visited attractions in the northeast and for good reason — it has sharks. Little Wold Vineyard (01430 424755) is about a 15-minute drive from the campsite and does tasting tours of the historical farm and award-winning wines. For longer day-out excursions, the shingle and sandy Hornsea Beach is 30 miles east and the historic city of York, with its magnificent 13th-century gothic cathedral, is roughly the same distance northwest.
Food and drink
There are breakfast baskets available for pre-order at the campsite and tea, coffee, and hot chocolate are included with the yurt. The nearest pub is the Black Swan (01430 410931) in the village of Eastrington less than two miles away. The pub serves good local food, has a garden and an open fire. However, the market town of Howden is only less than five miles away and has a great selection of eateries including Florena's Italian (01430 235094) for the best pizza, Kitchen (01430 430600) for light bites, snacks cream teas, and sandwiches, or Silvano's at the Waterwheel (01430 431970), a quirky indoor space which has a family outdoor area. For farm shops, try either Spuds and Berries (01757 630879) in Hemingbrough, ten miles west, or Drewtons (01430 425079) in South Cave, eight miles away in the opposite direction.
