Lakeside pitches and pods on a traditional campsite in the Derbyshire Dales

Blackbrook Lodge in the Derbyshire Dales is a neatly traditional campsite with a pitch to appeal to pretty much every type of camper. There are hardstanding pitches with electric hook up for campervans, caravans, and motorhomes. There are grassy pitches for tents and there are pods for those who like to go glamping. It’s dog friendly and all arranged in well-kept fields around the site’s pretty lakes. It’s a ten-minute drive from the market town of Belper and not far from Ashbourne and the Peak District National Park.

The broad appeal of this 12-acre site is only one of its charms; the lakes are probably its biggest. There’s something undeniably peaceful about camping near water and this place has both pods and pitches with watery views. There are benches in scenic positions and fishing is allowed. Next on our list of highlights is the fact that it’s family run and friendly. You can also put a big tick next to clean facilities and to campfires being allowed. Finally, this a year-round campsite which means you can come here anytime.

It’s worth a closer look at the pods at Blackbrook Lodge, which represent rather good value. They are what you might call glamping for campers: cute Hobbity pods with the simplest of interiors. They offer a dry space under a solid roof with (joy of joys) a real bed, electricity (TV and WiFi included) and the means to make a cup of tea. They have outdoor seating on an astro-turfed deck that’ll save you from getting muddy and access to a self catering blue lodge. They do not have hot tubs or luxuries.

Camper, glamper or caravanner, this place is well positioned for adventures in the Derbyshire Dales and the South Peaks. Don’t miss Carsington Water or Dovedale. Make sure you look around Belper and Ashbourne and try to visit Bakewell and Chatsworth House. But whatever you do, leave time for simply relaxing on site by the water.

Nearby attractions

On site, there are lakes stocked with carp if you fancy fishing and there’s more of that at Carsington Water, five miles from site. It’s also a great destination for watersports, waterside walking or cycling – and bikes are available to hire. The market town of Belper is six miles away and a nice place for a wander or a meal. Ashbourne, seven miles away, offers more of the same with cobbled streets and plenty of historic buildings too. It’s known as ‘the gateway to the Peaks’ – and particularly Dovedale which is a pretty place to visit within the Peak District National Park. Matlock and the Heights of Abraham country park with its limestone gorge and cable car is 10 miles away. For families, Gullivers Kingdom theme park is nearby and for thrill seekers of all ages there’s always Alton Towers (20 miles from site). Bakewell is 18 miles from site and Chatsworth House is not much further (21 miles).

Food and drink

There’s a handy on-site shop which sells the basics. The Tiger Inn at Turnditch is the closest pub to site, a short drive (less than two miles) away, and has a changing menu with daily specials served all day – as well as beautiful views of the dales. Belper (six miles) has plenty of eateries and shops in King Street and a twice-a-month farmers’ market every other Sunday in Market Place. That’s also where you’ll find the recommended Black Swan if you fancy tapas, nachos or burgers and loaded fries.
