Pronghorn Oasis

1 site · RV, Tent40 acres · Johnson Village, CO
A brand new Hipcamp site in 2024, on one of the most unique properties in Park County. With only a single Hipcamp site on a large 40 acre property and no neighbors nearby, you'll enjoy a private camping experience in one of the most scenic locations in Colorado. The property is partially wooded, and there is a spectacular view from the top of a prominent hill on the property which is some of the highest ground for miles in all directions. Upon completion of the City of Aurora's Wild Horse Reservoir in the 2030's, this will be a "waterfront" property. On site picnic tables (the lighter colored bench can fold into a table) and a port-a-potty are provided. The campsite is equipped with a unique dual purpose wood/propane fire ring - bring your own propane to enjoy campfires while burn bans are in effect. Great hiking opportunities may be found right on the property, and numerous nearby seldom used dirt roads provide exceptional mountain biking opportunities. Close to recreational opportunities in Buena Vista and Salida, as well as Antero, Eleven Mile, and Spinney Mountain Reservoirs. A level site with great access, and can accommodate large RV's and campers. And keep your eyes out - you might just see some Pronghorn passing through the property! Directions from the town of Hartsel: Proceed 2 miles South on State Hwy 9. Turn right (South) on CR 53. Stay right at the fork at 1.3 miles. At 3.9 miles, turn left (East) onto lightly used Shawnee Trail (Note: On occasion due to County grading on CR 53, there will be a small mound to drive over as you enter this left turn). Proceed about one-quarter mile (and past the the POSTED NO TRESPASSING sign just inside the property entrance) to the campsite a bit further on the left.

The Milky Way Cabin

1 site · Lodging2 acres · Florissant, CO
Disconnect and relax at our custom-built tiny house nestled against a grove of Aspen trees. This 100% solar-powered and self-sustaining cabin is situated on 2 acres at 9300 feet above sea level, accessible via a scenic 13-mile drive on dirt roads off Hwy 24 in Florissant, Colorado. Since we are 100% OFF GRID we do not have a well or septic system. Bring 4-5 (5) gallon jugs of water and dump them in the tank under the sink. It's very easy and is plenty water when used conservatively. This way you will have running water. The shower itself uses 1.75 gallons per minute. If you decide to use the shower, make it quick! NOTE: The cabin will be dry beginning October through May for the winter. You can still boil water in the kettle and put it in the sink for a hot water wash-up. Just no running water. There is a water filling station next to the Fire Station in Florissant. You can fill up your jugs of water there. Bring a short hose. Ace Hardware has them across the street if you forget. One dollar in quarters will get you 20 gallons. They are closed on weekends. There is another one in Divide. IMPORTANT: Do not allow the water level to fall below 1/4 tank. If the water gets too low it can cause an expensive repair. The tank holds 48 gallons. There is a composting toilet. It's very easy to use. We've made a quick video on how to use it. Visit our website at www.themilkywaycabin.com. Keep an eye on the urine container and it and empty as necessary. There are two lofts. One has a queen bed and the other has two twin mattresses made of foam that fold in to chairs. Bring sleeping bags if you plan on sleeping in the loft! The kitchen table is flat against the wall and folds down when needed. Turn and pull out the lever on top release the table. This place is brand new and we are still working things out. There is a stool under the stairs and the box in the corner was designed to be used as a seat/ottoman. Lay out a blanket on the brand new Huge deck and bring binoculars or use our telescope (available in the summer only and located in the shed) and stargaze! Lots of things to do including hiking, paddle boarding, fishing in the summer at 11 Mile Reservoir. Go snow shoeing, rent a Polaris in Woodland Park, and snow mobiling in Buena Vista. Eleven Mile Reservoir is just a few minutes away by car. Detailed arrival and departure instructions are on our website. You will receive a guest password upon booking on how to use the unique systems in the cabin. You must agree to read it thoroughly before your arrival. This is our family cabin, not an Airbnb. If you do not empty the urine bucket upon departure you will be charged a $150 cleaning fee. We have security cameras for when the place is vacant. We turn them off when there are guests for your privacy. Contact Raemi for more details at 303-975-6746

The best camping near Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area guide

Overview

About

With its rocky canyons, forested riverbanks, and backdrop of snow-hatted mountains, the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA) is made for outdoor adventures. White-water rafting enthusiasts can tackle class IV and V rapids along the Arkansas River—one of the United States’ most popular rafting rivers—but you can also paddle gentler sections in a kayak and fish for brown and rainbow trout. Alternatively, head into the hills to hike, mountain bike, or rock climb, pick up some speed along the OHV trails, or try your luck gold panning by the riverside. The park’s eight campgrounds all have direct river access.

Notable campgrounds

  • Best for outdoor enthusiasts: Hecla Junction has 22 tent or RV sites with easy access for kayakers, rafters, and hikers.
  • Best for RVs: Rincon Campground has spacious sites with riverside fishing right on the doorstep.
  • Best for peace and quiet: Vallie Bridge has 16 walk-in tent sites in a secluded spot by Bighorn Sheep Canyon.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. You can reserve one of the park’s 140 campsites via the Colorado Parks and Wildlife website. All campsites must be booked in advance, but same-day bookings are allowed.
  2. Campsite reservations open six months in advance.
  3. Campsites can book up quickly, especially for holiday weekends and during peak season (June through August)—make your reservation as soon as possible.

When to go

Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area is open year-round, but it’s busiest from May through September. This is the main season for rafting and water activities, while some of the best fishing is in early spring or from late summer through fall. Winter camping is possible if you don’t mind braving the cold, and the surrounding mountains provide options for snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing.

Know before you go

  • Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area is located along a 152-mile long stretch of the Arkansas River. The main entrance to the park is at Salida, 100 miles west of Colorado Springs or about a 2-hour drive. Highways 24, 285, and 50 run through the park.
  • A vehicle pass is payable in addition to camping fees.
  • Facilities in the park include a Visitor Center in downtown Salida, restrooms, and picnic areas, but you should bring everything you need with you. Cell phone service is patchy throughout.
  • AHRA campgrounds provide tent pads, picnic tables, and grills, but there is no electricity or running water. Dispersed camping is also allowed throughout the park, but you must use a portable toilet system and fire pan.
  • All AHRA campgrounds except Salida East, Point Barr and Vallie Bridge have at least one accessible campsite and accessible restrooms.
