Comprised of 250 acres of fields and woodland and bounded to the south by Mouse Water, it is a beautiful spot to get away from it all without having to leave it all behind if you don't want to. The fields are grazed and cultivated but the woodlands are much as they were at the end of the last ice age with spectacular walks along Cleghorn Glen with the chance to see badgers, bats, deer and all manner of birds among the towering pine and beech trees. The Mouse Water (pronounced moose) tumbles down along the edge of the farm and has some glorious pools for swimming, shallows for paddling and some spectacular water falls before it joins the River Clyde.

The Fauld is a small hill farm located close to Tobermory in the north-east of the stunning Isle of Mull in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. In total, the land comprises around 150 acres - although most of this area tends to be grazed by our Highland ponies and Shetland/Cheviot sheep. In spring and summer, there are wild flowers and birds galore, and bracing fresh air is on tap all year round - as are the spectacular coastal views from the top of the hills. The farm lies within walking distance of the iconic and colourful fishing port of Tobermory, which offers a range of shops, cafes and pubs - as well as being home to the Tobermory Distillery at Ledaig. If you have a car, we can offer off-road parking for a couple of vehicles, and we also have parking space for two campervans (though we do not have water or electricity connections yet). PS: You are advised to come equipped for camping in wet conditions whatever the season - although we promise that the weather can be lovely too! Overview

On the west coast of Scotland, the beautiful Taynish National Nature Reserve is an often-overlooked gem. The reserve covers almost the entirety of Argyll and Bute’s Taynish peninsula and is one of the largest original oakwoods remaining in Britain. Between the oak woods are scattered pockets of grassland glades, heath, saltmarsh and shoreline. Visitors can spend their time strolling along woodland paths and spotting wildlife, including roe deer, red squirrels and otters. While there are none within the reserve, private campsites within an hour’s drive include Tarbert Holiday Park, which has spacious touring pitches and heated glamping pods, and the small Ardfern Motorhome Park, which is exclusively for motorhomes and campervans.

When to go

Taynish National Nature Reserve is open to visitors all year round. May and June are the best months for seeing wildlife. In spring the landscape is carpeted with purple bluebells and yellow primroses and abundant birdlife includes migratory birds from Africa. In summer visitors can discover why Taynish is one of the best places in Scotland to see butterflies: more than 20 species have been seen there, including the rare, and threatened, marsh fritillary.

The closest public transit access is the bus stop in Tayvallich (30-minute walk), served by buses from Lochgilphead.
