Yurts in Lochaber Geopark guide

Overview

Stretching all the way from Rannoch Moor in the south to Glen Garry in the north, and from Loch Laggan in the east to the Small Isles of Eigg, Muck, Rum and Canna in the west, Lochaber Geopark is home to some of Scotland’s most spectacular scenery and some of the world’s most fascinating geology. Thousands of years of volcanic and glacial activity has created the geopark’s famous sites, including the volcanic rings of Ardnamurchan, the Ben Nevis Caldera and the Parallel roads of Glen Roy. Outdoor adventurers will find plenty to do here, surrounded by the UK’s highest mountains and deepest lochs: mountain climbing, skiing, biking and paddling are all popular activities.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. As a well-trafficked part of Scotland, sites can be booked up, especially in July and August. Make your reservations as soon as you know your dates.
  2. Campers typically arrive in the late afternoon or evening. Get the best pick of pitches by arriving earlier.

When to go

For long daylight hours; your best chances of getting some sunny days, and for enjoying outdoor activities, May through September is the best period to visit. To avoid crowds, aim to visit outside of the peak months of July and August. Outside of spring and summer, you will have fewer campsite options, as most are open seasonally, and may experience disruption to your travel plans (especially ferries) due to inclement weather.

Know before you go

  • If you choose to wild camp, be sure to follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.
  • Biting midges are a nuisance in the summer: bring repellent and long sleeves.
  • Following the Rock Routes is a great way to see some of the best viewpoints in Lochaber. The Lochaber Geotrails highlights six of the most interesting geological points.
