The Fauld is a small hill farm located close to Tobermory in the north-east of the stunning Isle of Mull in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. In total, the land comprises around 150 acres - although most of this area tends to be grazed by our Highland ponies and Shetland/Cheviot sheep. In spring and summer, there are wild flowers and birds galore, and bracing fresh air is on tap all year round - as are the spectacular coastal views from the top of the hills. The farm lies within walking distance of the iconic and colourful fishing port of Tobermory, which offers a range of shops, cafes and pubs - as well as being home to the Tobermory Distillery at Ledaig. If you have a car, we can offer off-road parking for a couple of vehicles, and we also have parking space for two campervans (though we do not have water or electricity connections yet). PS: You are advised to come equipped for camping in wet conditions whatever the season - although we promise that the weather can be lovely too! We look forward to welcoming responsible, country-loving campers to The Fauld :-)

Onsite, we also have Original Wigwam cabins which are wooden camping cabins (Pods) that offer all year round protection against the elements. With heating, electricity, fridge, kettle and toasters. For those wanting a bit more luxury there are also ensuite Wigwam Cabins onsite with wood fired hot tubs. We welcome families, groups, well behaved dogs and do allow campfires outside the wigwams and at pitches and can provide fire hubs on the campsite (this must be pre-arranged). Comprised of 250 acres of fields and woodland and bounded to the south by Mouse Water, it is a beautiful spot to get away from it all without having to leave it all behind if you don't want to. The fields are grazed and cultivated but the woodlands are much as they were at the end of the last ice age with spectacular walks along Cleghorn Glen with the chance to see badgers, bats, deer and all manner of birds among the towering pine and beech trees. The Mouse Water (pronounced moose) tumbles down along the edge of the farm and has some glorious pools for swimming, shallows for paddling and some spectacular water falls before it joins the River Clyde.

Our Huts are located within the Moss Wood area of Bute Forest - a mixed birch and alder wood that extends up the hillside to the west of the A886 that connects the Rhubodach Ferry to Port Bannatyne and Rothesay. Moss Wood has a range of facilities. Park on the shore-side where the coast can be enjoyed or at the main entrance, and take a walk up through Moss Wood along the Poetry Trail. A steep walk in places, the Poetry Trail is a loop punctuated with places to stop and read, to stop and think. Read nature poetry from throughout the ages, stop at the Blether Stane, or taking the spur to the Viewing Point back south across the Kyles. Moss Wood connects to the West Island Way – take the Poetry Trail and the spur to the Viewing Point – and then take the Stag’s Trod further up (steeply) till you reach the West Island Way. From there, head south towards Port Bannatyne or north along the boundary of the Community Forest. From the viewing point, you can also explore interesting heritage features such as the old WW2 bunker, kayak shelter, Balnakailly settlement, and the SSSI oak woodland.

Overview

Managed by the National Trust for Scotland, the Ben Lawers National Nature Reserve is home to the highest mountain in the central Highlands. Measuring 3,980 feet, Ben Lawers is the reserve’s centerpoint but not the only draw for climbers and walkers as there are seven Munros here (mountains measuring over 3,000 feet. Nature lovers will also love seeing its arctic-alpine flora, which includes many rare and endangered species and more than 600 types of lichen, and can spot wildlife such as red deer, black grouse, and ptarmigan. While there are no campsites in the park, a number of caravan parks and campsites can be found just outside the entrance.

When to go

Ben Lawers National Nature Reserve is open every day, all year-round. For the optimal conditions for hillwalking and mountain climbing, the best time to visit is during spring or summer, which is also the best time to see flowering plants. Weather conditions in winter, and much of fall, can be challenging. If planning to visit any time of year, be sure to have weatherproof gear.

Know before you go

Trails up to the mountains start at the car park. Visitors heading onto the trails should have sturdy walking boots, warm and waterproof clothing, and food and drink for the day.
Visitors should observe the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, leave no trace and refrain from picking flowers.
The closest public bus stop is in the village of Killin, just outside the reserve. This is also where you’ll find the closest public restroom.
