Best camping, glamping, and outdoor stays in Whitstable

The Kent countryside and coast have long attracted Londoners looking for a quick break away from the city and charming Whitstable must be one of the top spots. When it comes to camping in Whitstable, there’s history there too. Holiday parks and caravans have long represented an affordable way to holiday on this part of the coast but, these days, there are other kinds of sites too. Look a little further outside town and you’ll find Whitstable campsites which get the Hipcamp seal of approval. Whether you’re looking for a glamping getaway or just a pitch for your tent, there’ll be something to suit you in this Kentish coastal town.

The obvious thing to do while you’re camping in Whitstable and the area around it is to get yourself to the beach. The shingle beaches around town are the perfect place for a paddle and a picnic. You can enjoy the freshest seafood possible in the town’s little harbour and take yourself into town for an artisan ice cream. The charm of this town is that it doesn’t have large-scale attractions - just the tiny Whitstable Museum, bijou art galleries and independent shops though it’s summer oyster festival attracts the crowds. Just out of town is Whitstable Castle (more quirky family home than defensive structure) and Tankerton where grassy slopes give way to photogenic beach huts along the shore. Further afield Herne Bay and trendy, bustling Margate are a short distance along the coast for amusements and the retro theme park Dreamland while the historic sites of Canterbury with its mighty World Heritage-listed cathedral are just six miles inland.
