Weekend Trip to The Nut Plat Retreat
Highly recommend, my partner and I had a great time at Finlay’s cabin. It was exactly what we were looking for in terms of: how remote & private it was, outdoor and indoor fire & the hot tub! We also loved the unique structure and authentic feel… however a few things to note, for the cost per night(£180) I would expect: body wash & shampoo / hairdryer, better kitchen essentials, the coffee left was almost empty for example and old stuff was left in the fridge& top shelf was left completely wet.. I know it’s ‘small’ things but for the price you’d expect these things to be attended to.. for us we didn’t mind too much, but would have made the experience a lot nicer to have these things to improve the overall feel and experience. Also I felt that in terms of cleanliness, it could have been cleaner, many cobwebs & spiders, hair and dirt in the bath tub, messy outdoor porch area; we wanted to use the outdoor bbq and had to clean it very well ourselves.. for the price you would expect it to be clean and ready to use with coals etc however we had to make do with the indoor logs with no fire starter as only option was the chemical indoor one which we didn’t want to use to cook food on.. making it difficult. The hotub area is lovely, however we wanted to use it at night which proved difficult as no outdoor lightning, and indoor torch didn’t work.. some lanterns outside would be a great addition. Duncan was a kind host and has a very special plot!

White Peak Camping is such a beautiful and peaceful spot — absolutely loved our stay. The campsite is perfectly situated with easy access to stunning walks all around. The toilets were decent and clean, and the little phone-charging points are such a thoughtful touch if you need them. We also really appreciated the free fire pits, which made the evenings super cosy.
The owner, Janice, was great and very communicative, and her son Matt even came to check on us to make sure we didn’t get stuck with our van after the storm the night before. Really lovely people.
One thing to note is that they place strong emphasis on keeping noise down — no loud music at all — which we actually loved, because it made the whole place incredibly quiet, calm, and relaxing.
Highly recommend White Peak Camping if you’re looking for a beautiful, peaceful countryside escape. Thanks, Antje and Jay

Holistic Woods is exactly that.. the tranquility, no light pollution.. it was amazing, quiet and the first time for as long as I can remember my brain switched off from the noise of life.. can't wait to get back and chill out

3 nights at The Nut Plat Retreat
Such a beautiful spot, we took Ransoms for 3 nights. Everything we needed was ready for us, nice kitchen and a lovely hot tub. The host is very friendly and helpful. Don’t miss out on The Kentish Rifleman’s Pie and a Pint on Tuesdays and walks through Plaxtol, Igtham moat, and the green fields.

We had a great time camping here in early November. It was just us, and the surroundings are really nice. You could hear the nearby road at times but otherwise it was everything you’d like from wild camping. We’ll be back.

This spot was perfect. Despite it being November and seeing a little more rain than we probably would have liked it didn’t take away the experience. Jayne was accommodating to our needs allowing us a fire pit as it was out of season. Would be back!

I literally never write reviews for anything even when I triple promise I will but this place is just that awesome. It's got all the essentials so makes it comfortable (even on a stormy Oct night first time camping alone with my daughter!) But not too much that you feel like you're cheating- the whole point for me was for it to feel challenging, hey you survived that dear daughter you can do anything (without her dying from exposure). The toilets were nicer and cleaner than all weatherspoons loos, 2 charging ports for phones and a sink, lots of bins for rubbish and a gorgeous site with beautiful views (& a cute little swing). The views of the peak district were just stunning on the way down too. Janice was amazing - she walked down to us in the pouring rain (after a full day's work) to check we had everything! We'll definitely be back again, possibly when it's a bit warmer

Me and my partner came here for a much needed city break by tent and it was honestly amazing! The shower and toilet are seperate facilities and both clean, there is a kitchen too with a gas stove for cooking! The site is near anywhere you'd like to drive or even walk to around the peak district, and in the actual site itself you can see all the altitude and beauty around you. The air is incredibly fresh, and the owners of the campsite are really sweet and helpful. Will definitely come back for our next trip to the peak district this summer, thank you for having us :)

A lovely rural quiet place to stay. Fantastic views and lovely walks right on the doorstep.
Beautiful rural quiet spot with fabulous views. Great value for money. Would 100% definitely recommend. A nice touch was the picnic benches and a tree swing.
The toilets were extremely clean and fully flushable with running water and hand soap/handtowel.

Great spot, I was the only camper. Hiked 10km with my dog, put my tent up, cooked evening meal on my trangia on one of the wooden tables that are there, could have walked say 10 minutes to the pub but couldn’t be arsed, so just sat quietly with the dog enjoying the peace and quiet! Toilets are clean and there’s a cold water sink for washing up which is also v clean. Met the farmer on the way in, very pleasant chap. Great place! Hiked back to my car this morning. Lovely break from work!

Around Huntingdon
There’s no need to travel far to find quality campsites in this riverside town. Several sites offer boat moorings and camping pitches along the Great River Ouse, making this a top spot for boaters. Ramblers and riders will find trails in nearby Godmanchester Nature Reserve, Portholme, Houghton Meadows, and Brampton Wood, while wildlife watchers can get their fill at sites such as Shepherd’s Close and Grafham Water, known for their abundance of birds and flora.
The Fens
Sprawling from Huntingdon all the way up to Wisbech in the north and Newmarket in the east, this ancient landscape boasts caravan parks, riverside marinas, and glampsites aplenty, offering plenty by way of watersports and wilderness trekking. The Great Fen expanse just north of Huntingdon is a top spot for afterdark adventure, with its status as a Dark Sky Discovery Site, plus wildlife-rich reserves to explore during the day.
The Brecks
At the heart of this conservation area stands Thetford Forest Park, a deep pine woodland home to nature trails, kid’s play areas, and rivers ideal for a spot of wild swimming. Beyond, pingo ponds, violet heathlands, and tiny villages provide plenty more to explore. Accommodation options include working farm campsites, glamping lodges, and woodland retreats.
Dedham Vale AONB
A 90-minute drive from Huntingdon, this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is best known for its Constable Country, a rural region immortalised in the works of Romantic painter John Constable. Rich in walking trails and cycle routes, Dedham Vale is a favourite among active adventurers, with wild-style camping and caravan parks widely available.
Chiltern Hills AONB
Discover quintessential English countryside in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, around 90 minutes southwest of Huntingdon. Rolling hills harbour ancient forests and winding waterways, while the successful reintroduction of red kites makes this a top destination for birdwatchers. No-frills farm sites, kid-friendly campgrounds, and relaxed holiday parks provide plenty of options.
When to go
Like much of England, Huntingdon and the wider Fens are most popular during summer, when long days allow for hours of outdoor exploration. As a wetland, much of the region is flooded over winter, with many campsites closing. But for those that remain open, winter brings its own charms, including migratory birds and dramatic seasonal vistas.
Know before you go
- This region is a camping hotspot, so supplies can be easily collected in Huntingdon or any neighboring town.
- Many campsites and nature trails in the area are dog-friendly, as long as you bring a lead.
- Kayaking and canoeing gear can be hired at some riverside campsites.
- Wild swimming is popular in the Fens, though take all precautions as the rivers and water meadows can be unpredictable.
- Huntingdon Station is relatively well connected, but for hassle-free access to more remote spots it’s worth bringing or hiring a private vehicle.
