Castaic Lake Campground

Along with hiking, biking is one of the best ways to enjoy the peaceful landscape at Castaic Lake. There are several trails that are available for exploration, most of which are easily accessible and suitable for bikers of all skill-levels and inclinations. Check them all out here , and be sure to take special note of the bike-only single track, which is a nice challenge for more experienced riders.

With a lake like that, how can you say no? Lake Castaic is an awesome spot for either an afternoon joy ride or a weekend fishing trip, with respite from the hot Southern California sun a quick dip in the water away. Like many lakes in the area, your boat will be inspected, and must be clean and completely dry (they are sticklers about this, so make sure there isn’t a drop!). There are several spots to launch, but water levels can affect the Lower Lagoon launch, and all launch points could be closed for a few hours due to wind. It’s always a good idea to call ahead and see what the conditions are before heading out (661) 257-4050.

There’s fish in these hills! In fact, this lake holds the state record for largest largemouth bass (that’s a mouthful), clocking in at 21 pounds. Anglers can take to the water and try their hand at catching the many species that live in Castaic Lake, which include, of course, largemouth bass, striped bass, largemouth black bass, bluegill, bullhead, channel catfish, crappie, and rainbow trout (stocked biweekly by the Department of Fish & Game). A few tips: the “drop-off” area between shallow and deep water is usually a fishy hangout spot; lures that resemble trout tend to work with largemouth bass; and cast in deeper waters on colder days. You can enjoy exploring the perimeter of this lake via bike, horse, or hike, depending on your mood. Hiking is a great way to really bond with the local wildlife, and, if you love birds, you should definitely check out the “bird walks”, hosted the first Saturday of every month. There are more than 7 miles available for exploration (3 miles on the lower lagoon), and paths suitable for all ages and skill levels.

There are several miles of open trails available for exploration via horseback, which, along with hiking and biking, is one of the best ways to enjoy the lovely lakeside scenery. Check out the horse-friendly trails here and plan your route with your four-legged friend.

Even though there is a lot of motorboat traffic on Castaic Lake, there is still plenty of room for paddlers! The lake itself is a great place for an aquatic afternoon adventure. There are designated areas for jet and waterskiing, but the entirety of the perimeter is available for exploration via canoe or kayak. So get out there and get rowin’. Fishing isn’t just reserved for motor boats, either. Grab your pole and try your hand at catching one of the many delicious species who call this lake home (check out our fishing section for all the deets).

C’mon, you know you can’t wait to get in those sparkling waters. There are a few areas for swimming near the campgrounds, but be sure to look for designated swimming area signs before you dive in. Generally open Thursday through Sunday, be sure to call ahead of time (661-257-4050), as sometimes it is closed for the season due to drought or low water levels.

There’s not a ton of information out there about the wildlife at this park here, which is why we need you to get out there and let us know!
