Lake Bob Sandlin Primitive Campground

Some people come to Lake Bob to ‘escape from it all.

’ Then some people look at those ‘escapists,’ all next to each other with their electricity and water and tables (tables! pshaw!) and scoff at them, then walk straight into the woods. If you’re in the second category, or even if you refrain from scoffing but want a more secluded and stripped-down experience, then take a short (<1 mile) hike from the parking lot and embrace nature and seclusion. You’ll have a roughly 100-sqaure foot plot of flat land and that’s all. Reservations and ground fires are not allowed, but the tradeoff is that these sites are much cheaper.

One of my favorite state parks. The trails are well paced and well marked. I have stayed in several number campsites in both areas, 42 and 43 worked great for me. The best is the primitive site down from the trout pond. The site is off the trail and just a short hike from the pond. The trails are clear and wide. There are nice hills and a few rocky spots. Easy hike for kids and the dogs.

Had a blast this past weekend and plan to go back. Definitely will plan on reserving a spot by the water. Stayed at site #49 and was close to restrooms. Super quiet at night and lots of shade during the day with all the trees. Dogs aren't allowed in public swimming area FYI, which is understandable. We're able to find a small trail that led to an area they could play by the water.

Your guide to camping in Lake Bob Sandlin Primitive Campground

Overview

Biking

While the mountain biking trails are short, they’re ranked at an intermediate level, so you’re guaranteed to get your thrills! The 4.5-mile trail passes through dense forest and near two ponds, which makes the quick-and-dirty trail quite scenic as well. And when you’re done riding in the Texas heat? Jump right into Lake Bob Sandlin.

Boating

Lake Bob Sandlin measures in at 9,000 acres, which means there’s plenty of space to water ski, cruise, or chill out under the sun. We even hear there’s a party cove, so bring your friends along for a weekend of summer fun.

Fishing

Cast a line in Lake Bob Sandlin for a chance to catch largemouth bass, white bass, crappie, sunfish, and catfish. The included boat ramp and fishing pier are ideal for those who want to either fish from a boat or right from the shoreline. There’s even a cleaning station to use after a long day of fishing.

Hiking

The 4.5-mile multiuse trail within Lake Bob Sandlin State Park is perfect for a tough hike in the woods. The intermediate trail winds through lush, green forests and even has a few primitive campsites for an overnight backpacking trip. Find the trailhead near the main parking area by the lake!

Paddling

There’s no better way to spend those long summer days than canoeing through the cool waters of Lake Bob Sandlin. The 9,000-acre lake has plenty of room to paddle open water, but you can surely stick to the vegetated shoreline if you wish. In the mood to get a little wild? Gather a few friends to chill out in the party cove for an hour...or three!

Swimming

After a day hiking or biking, relax near the water on Lake Bob Sandlin. You’ll find the designated swimming area near the main parking lot and boat ramp. Swim out to the platform for an even better sunning spot. Keep in mind that the beach is unsupervised, so swim at your own risk.

Wildlife watching

The most popular wildlife watching experience at Lake Bob Sandlin State Park happens during the winter months. Come when it’s cold for a chance to spot an elusive bald eagle soaring over the lake. You can also request a guided nature walk on most weekends.
