The best camping in Fort Sisseton Historic State Park, SD guide

Overview

About

Fort Sisseton Historic State Park is named after the Sisseton Indian Tribe, and it features a historic fort and charming grounds that give visitors a glimpse into the region’s history. Back in the day, this area was a frontier army outpost, and the plentiful drinking water from the lake combined with tons of trees for timber and fuel made it an attractive basecamp. Nowadays, it’s more about fun than fortification. There’s a boat launch, canoe and kayak rentals, various historical festivals and activities… and of course, camping. The campsites here are relaxing and spacious, so get ready to stretch out!

When to go

The ideal time to visit Fort Sisseton Historic State Park is during the warmer months, from late spring to early fall, when the park's full splendor is on display. Winter can be harsh, with limited access to some areas due to snow, making the off-season less ideal for a visit.

Know before you go

  • Check the park's event calendar for historical reenactments and plan your visit accordingly to enhance your experience.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes as you'll be exploring historical grounds with uneven terrain.
  • Be mindful of park hours, typically from 8:30am to 5pm, and plan your visit within these times.
  • While the park does not offer camping, nearby lodging options are available for overnight stays.
  • Remember to respect the historical structures and artifacts, preserving the park's integrity for future visitors.
