Breathtaking Barbara Falls is in our valley 10mins away. You hike up to the falls and feels its breath.

If you're a foodie, cruise 2.5 miles into "town" for a bite at one of 4 locally owned restaurants or a coffee at one of the coffee shops. Enjoy live music every summer weekend at one of 3 different music venues.
Hope does not have a gas station, so please plan ahead and fuel up in Girdwood, Cooper Landing or Seward before heading to town. There is a small market here, so if you forget an essential, you'll be able to purchase ice, water, beer, snacks, etc. here in town.

We absolutely love this place. Love the serenity and privacy. The host is top-notch and provides for every need. We are returning guests and this is by far our favorite place to camp. Such a gem of a property!! Very thoughtful accommodations, clean, quiet and private. There's plenty of space to spread out, and the river was so clear and peaceful. Kiddos had a blast exploring the trails, river, and picking wild berries. The fire pit cranks!! Nice and toasty and the pavilion is such a charming and well apprecited addition. We definitely recommend and hope to return soon! Kris was very responsive and helpful. Lovely host!! Overview
About
This is no average park in terms of size or opportunity. Chugach State Park has nearly a half-million acres of wild space to explore, and is among the largest state parks in the country, loaded with creeks, rivers, lakes, glaciers, and mountain peaks. It’s also bordered by Prince William Sound with access to both the Chugach and Wrangell Mountains. Campers will find accessible campgrounds, cabins, trails, and roadways leading to prime areas for hiking and fishing. Convenient to Anchorage, Eagle River, Palmer, and Girdwood, Chugach is great for a day trip from a basecamp in town or overnight camping trips.
Notable campgrounds
- Best for unique lodging: Darell B’s Magical Mountain has a tree fort and amazing views in a mountain environment.
- Best for glamping: Lulu’s Tents and Events has several plush tents with glamping interiors conveniently set on the Knik River.
- Best for rugged camping: Jim Creek Blank Land is a blank slate with easy parking and plenty of elbow room.
Tips for snagging a campsite
- The park has four campgrounds: Bird Creek has 24 campsites, Bird Creek Overflow has 40 campsites, Eagle River has 57 campsites, and Eklutna Lake has 50 campsites. Aside from group sites, all campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Arrive early during peak summer season to ensure you snag a site. Eagle River has a three-night limit, meaning it is more likely to have turnover. You can reserve the group campsite and tent platform at Eagle River ahead as well.
- Public-use cabins are available for rent at several Chugach campgrounds. They are all reserved in advance and fill quickly during summer.
- Private Hipcamps are a great alternative to first-come, first-served public campgrounds during the busy season. Reserve ahead to secure a site near the park.
When to go
Chugach State Park is a year-round playground. Camping is most popular during the summer season when trails are open to hikers, and Eagle River fishing is also excellent during this time. Even still, being convenient to Anchorage and several other communities means the park is accessible year-round. Skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and dog mushing are popular winter activities.
Know before you go
- This is a large, rugged park with a remote interior. Visitors backpacking or traversing the far-off reaches should have excellent wilderness navigation skills and satellite communication systems for emergencies.
- The park campgrounds are RV-accessible, most with a 35-foot length limit. Eagle River is the exception with no size limit for RVs.
- All campgrounds offer toilets, water, and fire rings for visitors. ADA-accessible facilities are also present.
- Permits are required for all commercial and special-use activities. Hosting any organized event at a group campsite will require a special-use permit.

Hey... We have been "camping here at Eklutna" since the first week in May, 2018. We expect to move on this next Sunday, 30 Sept 2018--it's been a wonderful Spring, Summer and Fall. There were NO leaves on the trees when we move in--there was still SNOW on the ground in many places within the campground! Summer came in June, and last Sunday, the 23rd of September was the busiest day ever! Every parking lot and campground site was filled with campers, hikers, lovers holding hands, moose and bear hunters, ATVers, and folks just enjoying the beautiful Alaska Fall colors. What can I say? We will miss Eklutna, the people we worked with & so many others that we got to know as Volunteer Campground Hosts; photos may fade, but memories REMAIN!

What's not to love about Eklutna! The views at the water's edge are beautiful. The teal glacial water is stunning. On a warmer day you'll see folks kayaking, throwing sticks for their dogs, and relaxing lake side. If you head up Twin Peaks trail, there's a bench which overlooks the lake. Keep heading up and eventually you'll get to the peak for an incredible view which stretches the length of the 13 mile lake. You may even possibly find yourself amidst some mountain sheep. We were up there this past Memorial Day weekend and saw a bear run down the mountains into some brush. As for the campsite, it's a great location. A stones throw away, opposite side of some trees which is great protection from the glacial winds. A must visit!

This was actually such a cool camp site. I visited with a group of 10 and we were able to pitch our tents and still have room to toss a frisbee and gather in a circle for dinner. The river is absolutely incredible and adds such a nice feel. We were even able to safely view some bears nearby with a state trouper and the campground manager close by - such a great experience! Eagle River Campground is for sure the place to be :)
