This is a great place to camp while exploring this part of central eastern Oregon.
A typically well-cared for and managed Oregon State Park, it has amenities like power and showers that will be well appreciated after perhaps days on the road. And shade: it gets hot out there in the summer, and the campground is so deep in trees that most all the sites have shade through most of the day.
The John Day River runs right next to camp, and there's a short nature trail running down along it to a pond that has a viewing/fishing deck and some resident ospreys. And big noisy frogs.
You're within driving distance of the Fossil Beds monument, lots of backcountry roads, and the towns nearby, which have lotsa stuff. Check out
Grant Co Museum.
