An idyllic, wooded, Wye Valley escape, offering glamping pods, a treehouse and traditional woodland camping on levelled pitches

Set between two spellbinding valleys – the Elan and the Wye – Celtic Woodland Holidays enjoys a peerless position amongst Wales' most awe-inspiring natural wonders. Just outside the historic Wyeside town of Builth Wells, it's the perfect base for outdoor adventurists with Snowdonia to the north, the Brecon Beacons to the south, and the Cambrian Mountains and Cardigan Bay a little to the west. Then again, once you settle in to your luxury off-grid digs at this tranquil woodland retreat, you might not venture far after all...

The five pods that comprise the bulk of the lodgings here are enterprising host Leigh's own patented design. Christened the moduLog, these unique timber-built pods owe as much to treehouses as they do to wooden cabins, blending seamlessly in the sylvan surroundings. Constructed from locally sourced timber, each occupies its own elevated and secluded woodland clearing. Low-impact features such as sheep’s wool insulation and solar power are in keeping with the site's all-round eco-friendly credentials. Interior features include a wood-burning stove atop a slate hearth, a beautifully finished kitchen space (utensils included), and box seating with in-built storage that convert into comfy beds. Unlike the more commonplace pod designs, these canny cabins offer a far more welcoming space to unwind, with light pouring in through the French windows and a spacious porch for guests to enjoy al fresco dining and exceptional sunsets across the Wye Valley.

For those larger family getaways, the newly constructed treehouse happily hosts up to six guests, with separate double and twin rooms, plus a sofa bed in its spacious lounge. And for those who prefer their camping the proper way, a scattering of all-weather woodland pitches have been carved out in the forest. Made from artificial grass, they comfortably accommodate a family-sized four berth tent, and each has a raised barbecue and picnic bench.

It's the little extra touches that really elevate the experience here. Like the facilities hub you can call into for a hot shower a game of air hockey. Or the charming onsite shop stocking everything from torches and bedding packs, to locally-reared sausages and homemade cakes. Or the ingeniously up-cycled tractor tyres put to use as help-yourself-herb gardens – perfect for enlivening your dinner in the wood-fired pizza oven. In 2019, Leigh even added a wood-fired sauna and a cold-water plunge shower, which combine for an exhilarating wellness experience in the great outdoors. Not that it's all fancy dining and pampering. Nippers can really let their imaginations run wild here, too, making the most of the enchanting woodland setting. Get them to see what wildlife they can spot on the kilometre-long woodland trail, or see who triumphs in the fairy door hunt.

Cosy but pleasant.
Celyn was a lovely camping pod which i shared with my wife and labrador. Whilst I believe most adult couples would struggle to comfortably share one of the double beds, the option to use the additional bed makes up for this. Having two double beds set up, and a large dog bed on the floor, reduced the floor space significantly. But, it was manageable and pleasantly cosy. The view from the rearside was stunning especially at sunset. The amenities in the hub were clean and sufficient for our needs.

Peaceful easy feeling
The whole site was quiet and peaceful, just as we hoped. Our pod faced the fields and hills beyond while being sheltered among the trees. The pods are small, but if you have good weather like us, the outside space makes it fine. Communal areas were well maintained and there were great little bonuses of fridge spaces, games room, warm / dry large lounge area. Showers were hot!

Great for families and dogs!
Very friendly for us and the dogs. Great place to stay, amazing surroundings for walks, runs and other things. Everything you need for a holiday (and to survive in the wild - the bug out is a great shop!).

Our park offers some of the best rural views that Mid Wales has to offer. From the Wye Valley to the Cambrian Mountains, we are fortunate to be situated in a truly beautiful area and only a short walk from the medieval market town of Builth Wells and the Royal Welsh Showground. Our off grid glamping pods have been constructed with timber provided by local suppliers. Each pod is fully insulated using British sheep’s wool and is equipped with solar panels, kitchen amenities and glazed front panels for you to take in the breathtaking scenery of the woodland and surrounding countryside. A stay in one of our eco-friendly moduLog pods is the perfect way to spend your family glamping holiday. Should you want to spend a day at the park, we have a number of communal areas and activities just for you and your family. Our games room is fully stocked with books, magazines and DVDs and also houses the toilet and shower blocks. We have other communal areas including a fire pit and a designated BBQ section with pizza oven. You will also be able to receive Wi-Fi in the main complex. If you are just looking to stretch your legs we have designed woodland trails that take up just over 1km on-site, alternatively for those looking for something more challenging, the park overlooks the picturesque Wye Valley.
Nearby attractions

Builth Wells (1 mile away), famous for hosting the Royal Welsh Show every summer, boasts a pleasing blend of heritage and outdoor adventure. Builth Wells Golf Club (01982 553296) is one of Wales' most scenic spots to tee off. Seek out the town's historic park, The Groe, where you can enjoy a picnic beside the 18th century bridge crossing the River Wye. From here, you can take the tree-lined riverside path through the heart of the Wye Valley AONB. It's 136 miles in total to the river's source at Chepstow (via stunning Hay-on-Wye) home to the town's iconic Norman castle. A short drive to the south, the Brecon Beacons National Park offers plenty of activities including canoeing, horse riding, and mountain biking. The wildlife-rich Elan Valley is another great landscape to explore. It’s a designated International Dark Sky Park, offering unparalleled stargazing in the heart of the Cambrian Mountains. For a day at the seaside, head west to Aberyswyth and New Quay where you can watch dolphins in Cardigan Bay.

Food and drink

The onsite shop sells essentials such as bread, milk, cakes, and eggs, plus other goodies. Builth Wells (a mile away) has several decent places to eat and drink. The Greyhound Hotel is the go-to place for reasonably-priced pub grub and a warm welcome. For sweet treats and other homemade savoury delights, The Cwtch Café comes highly recommended for lunch. Pub-wise, The Fountain Inn serves Sunday lunch and shows the sport, while The Prince Llewellyn in Climery boasts a varied menu and has a kid-friendly beer garden.
