Family-friendly camping and glamping on a small site with a swimming pool, campfires and a British-style pub in the Midi-Pyrenées.

Driving through the sunflower fields and small rural settlements of Gers, it’s easy to get lost in the moment and forget where you’re headed — until you see a handpainted representation of a 17th-century musketeer standing guard at the gates of Camping D’Artagnan, that is. The man fictionalised by Alexandre Dumas as “the fourth musketeer” is something of a hero around here as he was born in nearby Lupiac. And while many of us know little about Charles de Batz himself, the character of D’Artagnan provides a perfect mascot for this family-run campsite in the Midi-Pyrenées. Like him, the campsite is stylish, clever and full of camaraderie.

The style at Camping D’Artagnan can be found in its equipped bell tents, on its lovely sun terrace and in the rather nice washrooms. The cleverness is down to British owners Rob and Gemma, who’ve transformed a derelict site into a beautiful place to stay. And the camaraderie? Well, that’s brought about by having just a few pitches and bell tents on-site. It’s a place where you’ll find yourself saying a friendly bonjour to your neighbours and perhaps sharing a drink at the on-site bar. You’ll be forgiven for slipping back into English there, as the place is styled as a British-themed pub.

There are just eight pitches here and five bell tents all tucked in a green and pleasant garden with views over the countryside to the distant Pyrenées. The simplest way to stay is in a two-man nature pitch, which means no electricity and a tent-only space. The most luxurious is the spacious emperor bell tent which comes with its own hot tub. Whichever you book, you’ll have access to the on-site, above-ground swimming pool, children’s play area and a host of bookable extras from an off-ground fire pit to a Champagne reception.

Camping D’Artagnan is located in the tiny settlement of Margouët Meymes, where the only things to do are to explore the countryside, enjoy the views and perhaps go fishing in the nearby lake. There’s more of that at nearby and not-to-be-missed Lac d’Aignan which has a sandy beach, swimming, watersports, a treetop adventure park and lakeside dining too. The region is known for fine food and Armagnac and there are plenty of opportunities to sample both in the towns and villages you’ll want to explore. Perhaps start with Lupiac, where you can pay homage to D’Artagnan at the statue in the village square or the town’s little museum.

In the hill of south west France
Fabulous stop over on our way to northern Spain, open out of season, lovely hosts (wish we’d got here in time for Sunday lunch in their little pub!). Set among the rolling hills, stunning sunset, outdoor kitchen so we could make some gorgeous food and drink wine to the sound of crickets, fell asleep to the sound of owls and wakened by the sound of tweeting birds. Must stay here again if we are passing through. 20th October. Great toilets, showers, bbq, outdoor seating, ehu.

My family and I loved camping at Camping D'Artagnan. Gemma and Rob have created a little haven in nature with all the facilities you could need for a great camping trip, including a well stocked kitchen. Our little girl loved running around after the chickens and we all enjoyed having a dip in the pool after a hot day. Close to some lovely villages and a beautiful lake for swimming, we had a very relaxing and enjoyable stay. Gemma and Rob are also extremely attentive and happy to help at all times. We will definitely go back!

Friendly and fantastic
This is by far the nicest and friendliest site I have stayed at on this round France trip. Small. Family run. Great clean facilities. Use of fridge and large outdoor kitchen. Electric hookup and grass pitches. I will be back to try the glamping tents and hottubs.

Beautiful Campsite
We loved our 1 night stay! We had a lovely, spacious pitch and the facilities were superb and so clean! The campsite had walks on the door step and also had a pub onsite and a pool. It was the perfect, peaceful stop off on our travels.

Rob and Gemma welcome you to an alternative camping experience set in the rolling hills of hidden Gascogny. Camping d’Artagnan is a family run campsite / glampsite with views over the Pyrénées mountains. Set in amongst the sunflower fields we provide a luxurious, romantic and secluded getaway location to suit your needs. We have a selection of options to choose from, including catered spacious bell tents to relax and de-stress inside and fire pits, BBQ areas and hot-tubs to chill out in nature. Uniquely situated in the centre of France’s South Western gastronomic tradition known for its wines, Armagnac, duck, foie gras and cheese. We provide an ideal location for indulgent relaxation or active holiday goers. At a short distance away are beautiful lakes for swimming and walking. There are family activities at the local lakes such as tree climbing, ziplines, paintball and hiking paths that link to the world famous Camino de Santiago a UNESCO world heritage site. All around at short distances are beautiful villages with historic architecture from the middle ages and beyond. There are very inexpensive traditional restaurants and more upmarket wine tasting lavish dining rooms.
Nearby attractions
A 10-minute drive, 20-minute cycle or hour's walk (six kilometres) away is Lac d’Aignan where there's a sandy beach, swimming and water slides, bar and restaurant. There's great walking, fishing and horse riding in the forest around the lake and treetop adventure at the nearby Parc Accrobranche (+33 (0)6 78 78 46 71) too. The town of Lupiac is 10km away where D'Artagnan fans can learn more about the man himself in the small Musée D'Artagnan and at a festival if your stay happens to coincide with it (usually the second weekend in August).
Food and drink
The campsite has its own on-site British-style pub, The Boar's Head Inn, which opens seven days a week in summer and on weekends off-season. It serves bar snacks including Ploughmans and pork pies from 4 pm and dinners from 7 pm–9 pm, as well as a good range of drinks. For a meal out with added interest, how about heading to La Ferme Aux Buffles (+33 (0)6 29 28 31 53), four kilometres away, where you can see a herd of Asian buffalos grazing on a 4x4 trip or visit the small farm before a meal at the on-site restaurant. In Aignan, Bistro Brocante Cave (+33 (0)6 44 72 29 28) is recommended as is La Guingette (+33 (0)5 62 03 84 29) by the lake. In the summer, there's a weekly night food market in Lupiac where you can buy food from stallholders and enjoy family dining in the village square.
