Hike-in
Hike-in to this Hipcamp.
The main attraction nearby are the School Forest mountain biking trails, which are across the road. There are 13 miles of single track mountain bike trails available. Four miles East of the homestead is the Village of Walloon, which has a public beach and park. Three miles South is the town of Boyne City, located on Lake Charlevoix. Young State Park is also three miles south, and has a beautiful public beach.*Once the snow has melted, I intend to get a proper site photo! In the meantime, use your imagination :) Within our 16 acre maple-beech dune forest, this campsite is higher up on a hill, offering nice views of the surrounding forest-scape. It is a 5-10 minute walk up, from the available parking spaces, so camp light or take multiple trips to your vehicle. Or, if you came to mountain bike, take a quick bike ride up to the site. Near parking, you'll find available drinking water, freshly filled that morning. You'll also find wood to purchase at $5 a bundle.  The parking area is shared with us, Matt and Andi. We are friendly and happy to share our space, and be providing inexpensive accommodations in a place we love and know others will too.  Your camping space, however, is private. We know where it is, we know of about three rough trails to get there, but will leave you in peace during your camping days. However, we may be seen or heard walking the main trail that leads to the backside of our property, where we have another garden and small orchard. You're welcome to explore these trails while visiting, peruse the garden (please be mindful of your step!), and purchase anything fresh or from the pantry. Andi cans and creates ferments regularly -- what is available is all about seasonal timing.  This camping area within our forest has a thinner tree top canopy, and offers more glimpses of the night sky. 2-3 tents can fit comfortably in this space. A bonfire pit is available. There is also wood to purchase for $5 a bundle near the parking area.  ***You are not allowed to bring wood from another forest onto the property.  Please do not sneak wood, or even consider bringing your own. Moving firewood is how tree-killing insects and diseases are spread, and even moving from a 50 mile range is highly discouraged. I'm sorry if this sounds harsh. Please read and do the research if you have any doubts or confusion on this rule.

Campfires allowed
Firewood provided, firepit. $5 bundles
Toilet available
Composting toilet. The compost toilet can be seen east of the house (to the left if looking at the house). It is a slender, wood structure, near some compost piles. Please do not urinate in the compost toilet. This is not always easy, but try your best to pee outside ahead of time. ** Please do not dump any full waste buckets into any compost piles. If a bucket is full, set aside with a lid on and Andi or Matt can tend to it. Thank you!
No pets
Potable water available
Hose, bottled water or jugs. I will happily fill a large container full of our well water to set next to parking area, in the shade and labeled, "WATER." The hose is attached at the front of the house, and can be found snaking it's way towards the garden, between the hemlock trees and the house, ideally left under the shade of one of the trees.
Showers available
Cold water only. The hose is also available for quick cool offs, especially if you're coming off the bike trails. Please use proper, biodegradable soaps and shampoos when using any of the nearby lakes, or when using our own hose.
Bins available
Compost bin, recycling bin, trash bin
Cooking equipment present
Grill over firepit, cookware, cooking utensils, cutlery. We will provide some basic cooking ware at the campsite. It will be kept in a sealed container underneath the picnic table. Basics include; a cast iron pan (one large, one small), small pot, salt, oil, utensils for cooking, utensils for eating, a grill top, paper towel for cleaning cast iron. *If using the cast irons, please do not clean with soap. Wiping clean with paper towel and composting used towel is sufficient. If it truly needs to be washed, please season it with oil and leave it looking nice for the next campers.

Andi and Matt were great hosts! We were their first ever Hipcampers - we pitched a tent at the back of their amazing property. Loved the location (the Boyne School Forest MTB trails are next door). We weren’t around camp much, but really liked the secluded & quiet camping spot!
