Happy on the Hill

Happy on the Hill: it’s both the name of the place and a fair description of how you’ll feel at this peaceful glamping site in Somerset. It’s home to just two cabins; each a unique bolthole that’s tucked among trees and secluded in its own space. It’s an ideal place to hide away for a few days or to base yourself if you want to explore some of Somerset’s sights. You’ll be soothed by nature, positioned within walking distance of Bruton, and wowed by the view from these eco-friendly, dog-friendly cabins for two.

Choose from Gabriel’s Wagon and Jake’s Cabin, both made largely from recycled, reclaimed and re-used materials. That’s certainly true of Gabriel’s Wagon, the basis for which is a restored railway carriage. It sits in a small orchard and is full of charm. Jake’s Cabin, while no less charming, is roomier with a glass front that makes the most of the view. It’s built from larch and cedarwood and nestled under oaks that are home to owls you’ll hear twit-twooing at night. Inside, each accommodation has a bathroom with a roll-top bath, a kitchenette, a comfy bed and a log-burning stove. Outside, each has a covered seating area so you can enjoy the outdoors no matter what the weather—and there’s a fire pit as well.

The reclaimed materials and the homegrown organic goodies in the highly recommended breakfast hampers (which you can book at an extra cost) speak of your host’s commitment to protecting the environment. So too do their suggestions of what to do and how to get around. Walking is high on the agenda, with recommended routes described shared on hand-drawn maps, but there are E-bikes for hire as well and there’s EV charging if you’ve come by electric car. On foot, the lovely town of Bruton is a good destination to head for. It’s two miles from the site offering gardens, galleries, and independent shops to explore. There are more of those over in bohemian Glastonbury, which is better reached in the car. The same goes for Cheddar Gorge, Wells, and Bath. All are temptingly possible days out from here and none of them are too far.
