Romantic shepherd's hut glamping in the Severn Valley, within rambling distance of Ironbridge and Bridgnorth

The private driveway up to Albynes Farm in Shropshire is like that you’d expect on a National Trust estate. Sheep-dotted parkland flanks you on either side and vast, old oaks stand stalwart amid the fields. The farmhouse itself is no grand stately pile, of course, and the place is still very much a working abode – lambing sheds and grain silos sit behind the house – but in the garden out front there’s a resting spot that even the most noble of National Trust properties would be envious of: a king-sized shepherds hut perfect for two people.

Past the lake and nestled beneath a pair of birch trees, the shepherd’s hut is the sole accommodation at Hay & Hedgerow Glamping, the aptly agricultural name given to this farm glampsite. Inside, its white, wood-panel walls enclose a big brass bed, compact kitchen and en-suite shower room, while outside a terrace, pinned between the trees, looks out across the parkland. The classic feel of the shepherd’s hut structure is juxtaposed with some thoroughly modern elements – there’s a television, free WiFi and the wood-burning-effect stove is actually electric – but everything has its place. When the sheep are out grazing in the meadow beyond, it’s a truly timeless scene.

While the rural location lends total peace and quiet, it also makes Hay & Hedgerow Glamping an ideal destination for walkers. A few hundred metres away a vast stretch of woodland begins, cloaking a stream that bubbles its way down to the nearby River Severn. It’s easy from the farm to follow footpaths down to the riverside, where a waterside trail follows the river’s course north into Ironbridge, five miles away. Before you reach town, the 18th-century Woodbridge Inn makes for a handy refuelling station (Ironbridge Gold on tap) before walking the last mile into town.

Ironbridge itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to a slew of museums, from china and tile museums to the excellent Museum of the Gorge. In the opposite direction from Hay & Hedgerow Glamping it’s also the same distance downstream to the market town of Bridgnorth, which has a good tourist information centre in which you can get your bearings. Whether it’s taking in Bridgnorth’s own steam railway, canoeing on the River Severn or heading to the highs of the Shropshire Hills further west, there’s plenty to keep you busy. Plus the local National Trust estates, of course. The real ones this time.

Bespoke Luxury Shepherds Hut that sleeps two people in comfy double bed, complete with en suite shower room with flushing toilet and wash basin. Bed linen and towels are provided.Kitchen area with belfast sink, granite worktops, small fridge, microwave/grill combi oven, hob, kettle and toaster. There is a table and chairs, TV and small sofa inside the Shepherds Hut and outside is a private decked seating area hidden within the trees, with outdoor furniture, fairy lights and barbecue. There is an electric 'wood burner' for cosy evenings and lovely views from the windows - you can sit in bed and watch the sun rise over the lake. Electricity is included as well as free WiFi.

Quiet & Beautiful
I loved glamping in a stylish quaint trailer seemingly styled on an old fashioned train cabin with all the trimmings & fittings you could want. It’s a romantic setting on a beautiful farm with free-roaming animals and a wonderful host. I would recommend to all style of ‘glampers’. Thank you to our Host!

After so many cancelled travel plans in the last 18 months, we were definitely ready to recharge our batteries and this was the ideal place! Comprehensive directions from the owners meant it was easy to find and the location couldn’t have been better. The view was beautiful, especially at sunrise, and although only a stones throw from the main house, the hut is private and secluded. The hut was clean and comfortable, with tea, coffee and some basic toiletries provided; and the small vase of flowers was a pretty addition. The inclusion of the induction ring hob is welcome, making it easy to prepare a simple meal when necessary. My only small criticism would be that the WiFi signal inside the hut was almost non existent, although it worked fine on the decking, but if you’re trying to get away from it all, perhaps that’s actually a positive? We would wholeheartedly recommend a stay, if you’re planning a visit to the area!

Welcome to Hay & Hedgerow Glamping, a bespoke Shepherds Hut set in beautiful parkland over looking fields, woodland and water. Although it has all modern conveniences such as hot and cold running water, flushing toilet, en suite shower, comfy bed, TV, kitchen area and free WiFi, you can also get back to nature with wild fowl and ducks visiting the lake during the day and owls hooting at night. There is a lovely private decked seating area nestling the trees outside the hut, allowing you to enjoy the lovely views and fresh country air. The Shepherds Hut is set in an unspoilt rural location set on a working sheep farm yet only 5 minutes by car from the historic market town of Bridgnorth and 10 minutes from the world heritage site of Ironbridge Gorge. There is plenty of wildlife to watch from the hut or you can go walking in the lovely surroundings. We pride ourselves on offering a luxurious stay in beautiful surroundings, with high standards and attention to detail to ensure that we are the perfect place to escape to for a relaxing break in the Shropshire countryside.
Nearby attractions
The rural locale of Hay & Hedgerow Glamping means walkers and cyclers are in their element. There's a particularly good footpath from the farm that follows the valley of Linley Brook down the the River Severn or, if you've got the legs for it, it's a 6-mile walk (a couple of hours) to Ironbridge (01952 433424). The Shropshire Hills are also a 25-minute drive west for longer day hikes. Regardless of how you get there, though, Ironbridge is a must at some point. This vast cast-iron construction that gives the town its name has been wowing visitors since 1779. There are no fewer than 10 museums within the gorge, including a recreated Victorian town at Blists Hill, and the free Ironbridge World Heritage Festival takes place every September. To the south, it takes 5 minutes to drive into Bridgnorth, a great foodie spot (see food & drink) and well worth a wander. The National Trust estates of Dudmaston (01746 780866) and Attingham Park (01743 708123) are also nearby (20-minute and 25-minute drive respectively).
Food and drink
There are no immediately local pubs so the best bet is to head into nearby Bridgnorth (5-minute drive) or Ironbridge (10 minutes). The former has a host of good pub-cum-restaurants, including the flower-clad Old Castle (01746 711420), the ancient King's Head (01746 762141), which all low beams and tiny doors, and The Boatyard (01746 218030), set on the banks of the River Severn and the place to go in summer. In Ironbridge, meanwhile, The Malthouse (01952 433712) serves decent gastro pub food and acts as a venue for shows and comedy, The Tontine Hotel (01952 432127) is directly opposite the world famous Ironbridge (and has a particularly good carvery), while The Black Swan (01952 882471) on the way into town in Jackfield, overlooks the River Severn and has a fantastic beer garden in summer, serving excellent but traditional pub fare – highly recommended.
