Pitches, bell tents and a gypsy caravan on the outskirts of Canterbury

Between the historic city of Canterbury and the seaside town of Whitstable are seven miles of countryside and woodland. Amongst it you’ll find Fleets Paddock Glamping & Camping. It’s an idyllic but fairly simple place to stay in the Kent countryside, not far off the Crab and Winkle Way, a handy walking and cycling route which joins the city and the sea. It offers campers and glampers a way to get to either without getting in the car. And once you’re done exploring your choice of city sights, countryside, or coast, this welcoming little campsite is the perfect spot for kicking back by the campfire.

Campers are offered free rein in the field, allowed to camp pretty much wherever they please. Pitches are flat, grassy, and off grid. There’s no electricity but the basics are covered: There's drinking water taps, somewhere to wash up, compost loo cubicles, and a couple of curtained hot showers. It’s all very outdoorsy. And in the middle of it all is the communal campfire pit; a sociable place to toast marshmallows, cook, and share stories of your adventures. If you like the sound of all that, but aren't quite self-sufficient, then book a bell tent or the bow top gypsy caravan. The site’s four glamping options offer an easier way to stay—think beds made, towels ready, and cooking kit included.

Off site, the Crab and Winkle Way is the best option for active types. You can join it less than a mile away from the campsite, then cycle five miles to the sea or two into the city where the World Heritage-listed Canterbury Cathedral is the obvious draw. At its other end, Whitstable is famous for its oysters and there are plenty of places to try them. It’s a cool town with great independent shops and a lovely shingley shore. And don’t forget that in between there’s all that countryside and woodland to explore.

10/10 would visit again
We loved the setting and the mix of tents, glamping and shepherds huts. The children thought the treehouse was great! And they enjoyed the swings, football and badminton. The facilities were clean and user friendly, with a lovely rustic feel.

Family Bell 1
We had a lovely time staying at Alex’s camping paddock. It was very peaceful and our daughters enjoyed the swings, football and badminton nets and treehouse. The bell tent was very well set up and being able to have small campfires was great.

Myself a daughter had a great time camping. Weather was fantastic. Plenty for the kids to do... Tree house, swings, football etc. Only negative thing was we followed directions via maps on hipcamo and it brought us to the wrong road, but we quickly managed it find it fine. Will definitely be back!

Set up your tent in one of our spacious pitches, and immerse yourself in the tranquility of the surrounding countryside. Listen to the gentle rustling of leaves, breathe in the fresh air, and let the symphony of birdsong be your morning alarm. One of the highlights of our campsite is the fantastic cycle path at the Crab and winkle way that winds its way through the enchanting Blean Woods. Hop on your bike and follow this picturesque trail as it leads you through ancient trees, dappled sunlight, and the subtle scents of wildflowers. As you pedal your way along, you'll feel a sense of adventure and freedom, with the beauty of nature unfolding before your eyes. The cycle path eventually takes you all the way to the charming coastal town of Whitstable. Explore the sandy beaches, watch the waves gently roll onto the shore, and relish in the seaside ambiance. Whitstable is renowned for its traditional charm, with its colorful beach huts, picturesque harbor, and delectable seafood. Indulge in the local delicacy – the famous Whitstable oysters – and savor the taste of the ocean. Back at the campsite, we provide the essential amenities to make your stay comfortable. Our facilities include clean and well-maintained washrooms, hot showers, and fresh drinking water. We embrace the back-to-basics ethos, so you won't find electricity hookups here. Nearby attractions

There’s plenty to do within 10 miles of Fleets Paddock Glamping and Camping starting with all the sights of Canterbury. Those include its World Heritage-listed cathedral, river boat tours on the Stour, its medieval city walls and St Augustine’s Abbey along with escape rooms set within the historic police station and jail, a climbing centre and museums. You can reach the city by using the Crab and Winkle Way to walk or cycle just over two miles. In the other direction, the route takes you into Blean Woods and, if you’re up for a five-mile walk or cycle, all the way to Whitstable, its harbour and beach. Other nearby attractions include Wildwood, a wildlife centre for British species and two wildlife parks for more exotic species: Wingham (10 miles) and Howletts (seven miles). There’s canoeing on the stour from Canoe Wild at Grove Ferry (eight miles) too.

Food and drink

The closest shop to site is Blean Village Store, just over a mile away, which is useful for picking up basics. The closest place for to eat out is The Tyler’s Kiln just down the road in Tyler’s Hill, where there’s a varied menu of pub grub. But there are also plenty of great options for buying supplies and for dining out in Canterbury, just over two miles away. If you’re coming from the train station, stop off in the neighbouring Good’s Shed for a great range of local produce or make a beeline there on a day out in Canterbury for lunch. The city has all the usual chains and plenty of good independents too and there are also plenty of supermarkets and shops for stocking up on supplies. In Whitstable, there are good pubs including The Old Neptune which is right on the beach and has a reputation for good music too and for the freshest oysters head for the harbour, Wheeler’s Oyster Bar or the Royal Native Oyster Stores.
