It’s proper camping on the farm, but with every creature comfort

Brittany and Cornwall share a Celtic-British history and a similar geography. Each is a westernmost promontory buffeted by Atlantic waves, with rugged capes and cliffs sheltering fishing villages and sandy beaches, while inland lie moors and the neolithic menhir monuments beloved by Asterix. Brittany, though, is almost 10 times the size of Cornwall and retains its own language and distinctive cultural traditions. In a part of northern Brittany blessed with place names like Plouezoc’h,Trudujo, and Beg ar C’hra you’ll find La Ferme de Croas Men nestled in the rolling countryside.The flowery signs by the roadside were painted by Monsieur Cotty, who started the campsite 20 years ago and also created the many objets trouvés sculptures around the site.This is also a working dairy farm shared by four generations of the Cotty family and an ark-ful of animals.They raise and grow food for 45 cows, but there are also donkeys, goats, sheep, ducks, rabbits, chickens, and Max the Pig among the 30 or so breeds. Such a menagerie makes this site a great opportunity to introduce children to all sorts of animals.

This is much more than a glorified petting farm, though, for this place demonstrates how farm life has developed over the last century, with a museum of farm machinery next to Ty Coz, the original family cottage, which looks just as it might have in 1900, complete with a beaten- earth floor, massive table and benches, four-poster bed, vintage dresser, and grandfather clock, which stands opposite photos of the great grandparents.

Rather than being a dusty, hands-off rural museum, though, this room can be booked for a special breakfast – a stack of pancakes, fresh bread, and home-made jams just waiting to be devoured with tea, coffee, or hot chocolate.

The Cottys, among whom Raphael speaks excellent English, allow small visitors to watch the milking, feed the animals, and witness the farm in action throughout the day, asking only that adults are present to ensure safety and that animals are allowed to rest between 11am and 4pm.There are tractor rides and donkey-cart rides around the farm in July and August (keep a look out for over 150 different plants and trees), and plenty to see round about, with beautiful sunken-road walks starting from the farm itself.

The historic port of Morlaix is just 10 minutes’ drive away, while the closest beaches and coves on Brittany’s heather-covered northern coast, the wonderfully named Armorican Corniche, are about 15 minutes away by car.

Morlaix is famous for its colossal viaduct, the remarkable 16th-century house of Queen Anne of Brittany, and for beating off an attack by an English fleet in 1522.The English sailed up the estuary and found the town undefended and, in true medieval style, proceeded to pillage. But they made the mistake of lingering in the wine cellars until the locals returned to drive the inebriated intruders away, subsequently adding ‘S’ils te mordent, mords-les!’ (‘If they bite you, bite them!’) to the town’s coat of arms. Fortunately, there are no worries about overstaying your welcome any more, with spacious pitches, cabins, or tents waiting for you just 20 miles (32 km) down the coast from the port of Roscoff.They’re used to visitors here year-round as the farm is often visited by school groups, and one of the friendly features is ‘Oscar’, the name given to a building Monsieur Cotty constructed from boulders and stone blocks that Obelix would have been proud to lift. Inside this wonder is an equally massive table for campers and farm visitors to socialise and feast around, whatever the weather.

Discover this little corner of Brittany whilst staying on a working family farm. Pitch your tent within the grassy fields surrounding the farm, amongst the orchard trees. Pitches are spacious,  and amenities are easily accessed.Shower blocs and the games room are a little stroll away, whilst the animals including cows, sheep, ducks and donkeys are part of the picturesque farm scene.The kitchen block is housed in a converted stone outbuilding and has all you need to cook up a feast, with electric hot plates, fridges, freezers, recipe inspiration and even a snug upstairs to curl up and watch TV.Children and grown ups can explore the river (500m) from the campsite as well as the wooden play hut hidden amongst the trees. There is also a games room with a reading corner, table football, ping pong and board games for those rainy days.Outside there are plenty of distractions to keep people entertained from trampolining to ride-on tractors, to animal petting and giant connect 4.You can collect fresh eggs every day from the hens and enjoy the bumpy tractor rides during July and August around the farm.There are so many places and things to explore in this area from the Baie de Morlaix, to a Gaule Village, Wolf Museum to cycle paths and boat trips.You can do as much or as little as you like here.

Camping Pitch
Amazing campsite
This a brilliant campsite, with so many thoughtful details! It’s really well organised and my children absolutely loved all the animals. We would definitely return.

We have returned from a relaxing half-term holiday at Le Ferme De Croas Men which is set in a delightful location. The owners are very relaxed, making us feel welcome and suppling us with fresh milk incredibly quickly on several occasions - small touches like this made it really enjoyable. Facilities around the farm were superb for our children who particularly liked watching the cows being milked, and helping to collect freshly laid eggs. There are lots of other animals, as you might expect on a farm, along with a couple of friendly dogs who stopped by our tent. There are various facilities to make your stay more comfortable - at the time we rarely saw anyone else using them. I was surprised at how few visitors there were staying in either tents or caravans, we were told to pick any space we liked and had a massive pitch to ourselves for the whole time. There are loads of nice places to visit and eat at in the local area and it felt like we only managed to see a few of them. Which we look forward to returning for another holiday!

If you are considering camping in Brittany then you just have to stay at Le Ferme De Croas Men. We spent 7 nights here camping in August, with our two daughters (aged 7 and 2) and loved every minute of it. The owners are very relaxed and friendly and the facilities are brilliant. Once you are on the site all the 'activities' are free. There is a big trampoline which is great as a central place for kids to meet. There is the old farm, where you can see the cows being milked plus the donkeys, rabbits, pony, hens and a pig, plus guinea pigs you can play with.In the evenings there are various events, from tractor rides to Bretan dancing and a 'theatre'. They have a daily bread order (croissants, baguettes etc), plus they sell their own milk, cidre and apple juice. The campsite has varied pitches in different areas, with shade if needed. The facilities are excellent with two main blocks of toilets, showers, basins, washing up and laundry. In the campers 'kitchen' there are freezers, kettle, microwave etc. There's also free Wifi in the 'info room'. The location is fantastic with so much to do within a short drive away (Morlaix, beaches etc). Also across the road from the site is a riding school and our elder daughter went for a pony riding lesson which she really enjoyed (ended up being around 90 minutes long for just 25 euro!). There is just so much right about this site that I could just go on and on, but suffice to say we will be going back next summer. It's easy to find and is well signed from the main roads.

We stayed at the Ferme de Croas men campsite, for a week in late June. We opted for posh camping, and stayed in the Cabin.  We have a young daughter (3 years) and it was perfect. Two bedrooms, cooking facilities and fridge, the only thing it didn't have was running water, but we were moments from the shower/sanitation block so wasn't an inconvenience....there was endless hot water, a place to wash babies/children and washing machine.The setting is beautiful, just as you would hope rural Brittany to be. The major added bonus was the farm, you are free to walk around and meet the donkeys, rabbits, hens, pig, we even went to help collect the cows for milking. We didnt know Brittany at all before our visit, but found Ferme de Croasmen to be a great base, there are various lovely beaches to visit just 20 minutes drive away and beautiful villages.  Will definitely be back.

We are a small, family owned campsite and farm, located in the heart of the beautiful Breton countryside. You are welcome to visit the farm and the animals (donkeys, goats, chickens, ducks, rabbits, a pig…), watch the cows being milked, stroll around our kitchen garden, and visit the Ty Coz, a traditional Breton farmhouse and our museum of old farm machinery. During summer, Freshly baked bread and croissants are delivered to order each morning, and you can also pick up some farm produce at our reception, including our home made organic apple juice and cider.Pitches are flat, grassy and partially shaded. Or if you prefer you can try our rental accommodation- we have gypsy-style caravans, wooden floored canvas ridge tents, a spacious chalet and a cosy little dream cabin. We have 2 clean, modern toilet blocks, showers with free hot water, kitchen and bathroom sinks, washing machines. There is also a playroom and a computer with internet access Nearby Attractions Nearby attractions include the historic town of Morlaix (10 mins), with its bars, restaurants and weekly market, the Chateau du Taureau (20-30mins plus a boat trip!), the Chateau Kerjean (40mins), the famous Oceanopolis at Brest (45min), the incredible Granite Rose Coast (45mins) and, of course, the beach- there are plenty to choose from a mere 10-20 minutes away Directions Please visit our website for directions. Nearby attractions

Morlaix hosts one of the local markets, which take place every day of the week. Only one of them is further than a 15-minute drive from the campsite, so fans of produits régioneux can get a daily fix if they fancy, and discover lovely Breton towns and villages in the process. There’s a big indoor pool with slide and jacuzzi at Plouigneau, if the weather’s awful, but otherwise there are so many beaches and coves to explore nearby – the sandy shore, surf, and sailing schools at Locquirec are recommended. Beyond lies the medieval town of Lannion and the pink-and-orange rock formations of the enticingly named Côte de Granit Rose (Pink Granite Coast) are just 25 miles (40 km) away.

Food and drink

Whether you choose to breakfast in the atmospheric old farm cottage or chez vous, it’s a meal to savour on a farm where milk, eggs, butter, yogurt, preserves, honey, cider, and apple juice are either made right here or locally produced and can be bought at reception. Factor in local markets and this could be a real foodie treat. The Crêperie L’Hermine (00 33 2 98 88 10 91) on the quiet rue Ange de Guernisac, in the heart of Morlaix, makes a traditional Breton pit-stop after the Saturday morning market. Alternatively, go for a lunchtime treat of fresh seafood or fruits de mer on the terrace of the Brasserie de la Plage  (00 33 2 98 79 30 70) overlooking the beach and harbour at Locquirec, or stay for dinner in the swanky restaurant (00 33 2 98 67 41 02).
