Situated on top of a ridge with expansive redwood forest and coastal views, the Audrey Edna Cabin provides a completely private gathering place and destination for visitors with reservations. The cabin has spectacular views of forest, sky, ocean and the Butano ridgeline. It's a short hike to 8000+ acres of county parkland where you can hike, bike and ride horses (though please note, there are no facilities for horse boarding at the cabin.) The cabin is located at Alpine Ranch, a property adjacent to Sam McDonald County Park that was protected by Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST).
Whether you are looking for an active experience or just want to relax in a peaceful, remote setting, there's something here for everyone.
This is a rustic hike-in cabin designed for a introductory pack-in experience. Bedding is not provided. It is about a 1.7-mile hike on a rolling dirt road from the Sam McDonald County Park parking lot, with about 650 feet of elevation gain. Most hikers can reach the cabin in an hour or less. Guests should plan to arrive at least 2 hours before sunset, and pack water and flashlights or headlamps. Guests with limited mobility, please contact us for information regarding accommodations that will allow you to access this shared resource.
*A note about reservation availability: On the weekends, POST offers priority reservations for the cabin to our partners at the San Mateo County Health Department and Park Rx to provide patients with equitable access to the benefits of nature. Occasionally, we have last-minute public weekend reservation availability due to cancellations. The cabin is reservable up to 3 months in advance, on a rolling basis.

Property History:
At one time, the ridge of the Santa Cruz Mountains was a thriving center for trade between tribes of the coast and the bay, which we still find evidence of today in cultural sites and artifacts throughout the region. Native people have cared for this land since time immemorial, including the local Muwekma and Ramaytush Ohlone who are still active in the area today. This property specifically is host to a tributary to one of just a handful of waterways that support salmonids in this region, which are a species of tremendous importance to native people.
Over 1000 acres here were eventually purchased by entrepreneur Ridgeway Rowley, who built a home on the ranch in the 1880s as part of an unsuccessful wedding proposal to Fannie Page, daughter of a local mill owner (ever heard of Page Mill Road?) After being rejected by Fannie, Rowley operated the ranch for a decade in conjunction with his work as District Attorney and publisher of the Palo Alto Weekly, before eventually returning to his hometown of Cortland, NY, where he lived as a bachelor until his death. Over the course of the 20th century, the ranch was divided, some parts of which became Pescadero Creek County Park. POST purchased the 350 acre home property, now called Alpine Ranch, in 2012 through our Heart of the Redwoods campaign, an initiative to protect 20,000 acres of Redwoods in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Alpine Ranch borders Pescadero Creek County Park and Sam McDonald County Park, adding to the area’s protected open space and containing more than a mile of tributaries to Pescadero Creek, which flows year-round and is a major spawning stream for steelhead trout.
The Audrey Edna Cabin at Alpine Ranch is situated at one of the property's most scenic overlooks. The cabin was built in the early 1900's, and completely reconstructed up to modern building codes by POST in 2018 so that all could enjoy this special place.

Hello all! If you're looking for some glamping with creature comforts, while just being 10 minutes away from restaurants. This is the place for you. We are a 5 acre property and home surrounded by tall redwood and oak trees. Very green and lots of shade. These are the amenities/facilities you will have free access to: Pool, Pool chairs and umbrellas, Deck area with sunset view, Trampolines, and hammocks.
There is not cooking allowed by or at any of the common areas, due to flies and critters. Cooking and eating is only allowed by your sites and not in any common areas: Hammocks, Trampolines, Pool Area, tables, sink, and deck please follow this rule because we want to prevent our shared areas to be fly and bug infested. We are still working on ridding the flies and cleaning. (please try to bring prepackaged food or something easy. If anything you can drive 10 minutes to nearby food and grocery). In the past we let people cook and eat around the pool but now our whole property is fly infested and I find scattered leftovers on the ground. Thanks for understanding.
THERE IS A 1-2 MINUTE HIKE TO THE CAMPSITES 1-5!
Poolside campsites are closer to the parking and are bigger.

Most of our guests are those that come from foreign countries and they all LOVE the property. I love leaving a great impression of our area.

Just what I needed. MY husband asked when I got back… do you see any people? Nope, I said— only cows, quail and a few raptors. Beautiful views. Rebecca was accommodating even though I caught her by surprise— asking to camp in the post rain muck. She expressed care and was lovely. It’s a pricy spot.. but you are paying for privacy at the top of a rolling hill. I’ve never stayed anywhere like it.

Our recent campground visit was exactly what we needed.
The site was tucked deep in a redwood forest—private, peaceful, and surrounded by nature. Each spot was thoughtfully prepared with a leveled pad for an RV or tent, a picnic table, and a fire pit. Upon arrival, the owner personally greeted us, guided us to our site, and even kindly offered firewood for the evening.
The entire campground felt calm, quiet, and secluded—true off-the-grid relaxation. The owners and their family were some of the warmest, kindest people we’ve ever met. On our second day, they stopped by to say hello and even brought their horses. Our dog was absolutely thrilled to see them.
This getaway was especially meaningful for us during the holidays—a perfect chance to reset and prepare for the new year.

We loved our experience at Fancy camp in Tent #1! Sana and William created a beautiful campsite filled with all the things needed for a comfortable stay—peaceful surroundings, cozy bed, blankets, warming stove, games, farm fresh eggs, coffee, hot shower, and clean bathroom. From the tent you get stunning views of the forest and delightful daily visits from friendly goats roaming around munching at the vegetation. Bonus—the olive oil, pomegranate molasses, and spices sold at their farm stand are very delicious!

This was an incredibly peaceful, beautiful site. Had a good experience with Art's friend Stas showing us how to get to the site. There is a picnic table and a bench at the site that were handy. The views of the sunset on one side and the sun rise on the other were amazing. There was good bird-watching and coyote-listening, and we enjoyed watching some kind of cute mole thing excavating tunnels right next to us at the site. Our dog really enjoyed staying there too. The general store/cafe/bar 5 minutes down the road was had fun vibes and amazing pastries in the morning.

Wow! What a treat. The Creek Site is private, quiet, and so peaceful. We travel with a little one, and we felt safe and comfortable the whole time. The short hike from the site to the creek was the perfect challenge for the kiddo's little legs. We were immersed in nature and lulled to sleep by the sound of the creek below, but the property was also just a short drive to nearby amenities and attractions. (We couldn't miss the steam train in Felton.) Doug was very communicative and friendly. We will definitely come back.

Great secluded spot in the redwoods! You’ll have the nice cleared wooded area to yourselves. We stayed at campsite 1 up top. Campsite 2 is about a mile down the dirt road closer to the creek. It’s a nice hike down and gets pretty steep at the end. There are no toilets, but well water. We had no problem driving our 2 wheel drive camper van there. Just the camping we like. Beautiful woodsy area and just us! Nice hosts, we’ll be back!

We spent a lot of time on the beach, which is only a few minutes away and we visited Pescadero. We stopped into the San Gregorio store… They had live music. It was so crowded! The place to be.

What a fun and memorable experience! Airstream #1 was clean, cute and comfortable with all the necessities. We very much enjoyed using the fire pit and watching the waves roll in. The location was excellent too - just minutes from town, but on a secluded bluff. We do wish airstream #1 would have been slightly cheaper since it’s the same price as airstream #2 & #3, which both have unobstructed/ larger views and more land space. However, it was still incredibly gorgeous and unique. We really appreciated how communicative Mark was too! We would love to return with friends for more airstream living!

We really enjoyed our stay here! The campsite is spacious, private, and wonderfully quiet — exactly what we were looking for. Our anxious dog actually slept better here than at any other campsite we’ve been to, which says a lot. He didn’t wake up every few minutes to check the surroundings; he was completely at peace.
A couple of things to note: the kitchen area could use a bit of attention. Also, make sure to arrive before dark. The driveway is very steep, but my 2WD was able to make it with careful driving.
Overall, a beautiful and peaceful spot, and we would definitely come back!

About
Experience a sense of wonder as you swap Silicon Valley for a scenic valley with an ancient forest of coast redwoods. This 2,800-acre park features 18 miles of hiking trails. As you walk along, keep an eye out for bubbling brooks, notice the soft moss on the trees, and take in gorgeous green ferns and huckleberries. Stop and get your feet wet at one of the waterfalls along Fall Creek or Pescadero Creek. Settle into one of the park’s 55 family campsites with room for up to eight people, or select one of four group campsites.
Notable campgrounds
- Best for large groups: Circle Group Camp can accommodate 50 people with tents only.
- Best for day hikers: Huckleberry Campground offers four hike-and-bike campsites.
- Best for backpackers: Slate Creek Trail Camp is part of a network of backcountry trails.
Tips for snagging a campsite
- Online reservations are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Reservations can be made six months in advance online or by phone.
- Campsites at Huckleberry Campground are first-come, first-served.
- Check-in begins at 2pm and check-out time is noon for all family and group sites.
- Reservations are required for Slate Creek Trail Camp’s six sites, each of which are limited to six backpackers. No dispersed camping is permitted in the backcountry.
- If the park closes due to inclement weather, campers may be relocated or have the option to receive a full refund from the day of evacuation.
When to go
Be prepared for coastal fog that feeds the redwoods, even during summer when leopard lilies are in bloom. Weather is changeable and often wet, as the park receives 40 to 60 inches of rain per year. Campsites can typically be reserved from late spring through mid-autumn, but during fall or winter, severe weather or drought can close the park, which is typically open for day use from 6am to sunset during this time.
Know before you go
- Only one family campsite is wheelchair accessible, and four require a short walk from parking. No family campsites have RV hookups.
- Fires are not permitted at Slate Creek Trail Camp, but backpacking stoves are allowed. Water must be packed in or purified from nearby Slate Creek.
- Showers and restrooms may close due to severe drought conditions.
- Dogs must be leashed and are only allowed in campsites and picnic areas and on paved roads.
- Maintain a “crumb clean” area to protect the marbled murrelet, an endangered seabird that nests in the forest canopy.

Easily one of my favorite camp spots of all time... we arrived on a Monday and stayed for three days and we were virtually alone in the camp. Misty foggy mornings and amazing hikes through the ancient redwoods were unforgettable. A short trip to Pescadero is very much worth it, as is traveling down to the beaches just 20 or so minutes away. I could literally live here forever. 10/10

We decided to take our almost 2 year old and our dog camping for the first time and come to Portola Redwoods. We were lucky and found a Friday night opening at site 46 just a few days ahead of time.
The spot was nice - the trees are beautiful and the site is very large. While I wouldn't call it secluded - it didn't feel too close to the neighbors either. It was very hot during our stay so the shade was much appreciated.
It did get pretty noisy at times with other families but we weren't complaining having a toddler ourselves. Bug spray is also a must in the evenings. Also note that you can't take your dog on any of the trails. Overall though a great stay and definitely recommended!

We had a great time in the Ravine group camp site. So shaded and lovely. Only downside was that the walk to the bathroom was a little treacherous after a recent rain and washed out some of the slope down. Not bad during the day, but at night when you are groggy, not so great. Otherwise the site was great with lots of spots for tents. It was April and a few trees had been felled on the site which took up a couple of our tent spots, we could not have put the full 25 people on the site, but luckily we didn't need that. We loved this site. This is a great getaway.

We were at site 42, which felt nice and private. There is lots of shade, and a number of lovely hiking trails close by (Eat it, Muir Woods!) We went in April and it was COLD overnight! 40 degrees... bring your wool socks! Also, lots of kids around.

We've camped at the Circle and Point group camps here for the last 3 years. Buggy at dusk, animals don't seem bad (except for those Stellar Jays!) Great hikes for all ability levels, great Ranger and Naturalist programs for families and the river is great too!

We decided to test the waters and take our dog on his first camping trip to Portola Redwoods SP. We were in campsite 48, which seemed a bit bigger than the other sites and also more secluded. It's great if you have dogs because of the natural redwood barriers!

Heed the raccoon warnings at Portola and take precautions with your food. They are active even during the day and campers should keep car doors closed, with food secured inside.

This place can be a real gem if you get a nice secluded spot close to the creek/river. Otherwise, you'll be cramped next to families. Some of the sites are on a hill so if you're a rowdier group, stay closer to the water so your voice doesn't carry.
