Very Private Riverside

1 site · Tent70 acres · Stratford, ON
I am a country girl who loves to meet people from around the world and share our beautiful bit of space with others who seek quiet and solitude. Steve is my husband and the capable hand that brought my dream of a HipCamp alive. We seek to share our special property with guests who want to drink in nature in a very quiet setting. You will have 1 large campsite beside a river in a lightly forested area, surrounded by farmland. You will be the only booking on our complete 70 acres, so you can enjoy this piece of country in privacy. Cook all your own food over a campfire, or try area restaurants or pizza (5+ km away). A tent structure with a 'thunder box' brings you privacy for bathroom needs. You will be expected to dispose of your waste in the compost bins provided. There are two tables and seating for four, a swing to enjoy gazing over the river, and a few other spaces to discover. Wake to the gobble of wild turkeys and possibly the yipping of coon kits or wild coyotes. Bring your pet. You can drive your own 4x4 near (but not onto) the campsite when it's dry. The last hill is carry-in. Or you can choose to begin your detox with a 1 km moderately challenging hike through woods, fields and meadow while we run your supplies back. Buy campfire bundles or gather your own from abundant amounts of deadfall in the woods. During the day you can wade up the river or dangle a line. Every week of the year, the river changes and offers its own experience, sometimes full and fast, and sometimes slow and meandering. We welcome you to harvest the woods for berries, build wigwams with downed wood, and wander the trails with your canine family members to enjoy off-leash roaming. Once you turn in for the night, you will sleep well in the quiet with darkness high-lighting the stars. We are near Millbank with the famous Anna Mae's bakery and pleasant, family-run, Zehr's Country Market for fresh local foods and basic groceries. Kitchener-Waterloo and Listowel are the nearest largest cities.

Forest camping near Goderich guide

Overview

Nestled between the mouth of the Maitland River and Lake Huron’s eastern shores, Goderich, Ontario offers beaches and swimming galore. A vibrant fish and wildlife scene, Goderich features year-round hunting and fishing (with proper permits), along with boating, tubing, or biking. Goderich lies in the path of various migrating birds, providing opportunities for birders to fill out their life list. Lucky campers may see bald eagles soaring overhead and diving into Lake Huron for a fresh meal. Nearby campsites include amenities like electrical and water hookups for RVs or tent camping.

Where to go

Point Farms Provincial Park

Point Farms Provincial Park sits on a bluff with stunning views overlooking the water. Set up camp at one of the pull-through sites for car camping, RVing, or tent camping with electrical hookups and a short walk from water taps, comfort stations, free WiFi, and laundry facilities. Boating, biking, and birding for yellow bellied sapsuckers and orioles give campers plenty to do. Campers who plan to hunt should make sure to snag a small game hunting license for year-round hunting in the area.

Falls Reserve Conservation Area

Almost entirely surrounded by a loop in the Maitland River, Falls Reserve is an exciting family camping experience with a gorgeous natural backdrop—small waterfalls pouring over rocks with swimming holes below. Watch birds migrate in spring and fall, or take a hike through the dense 300-year-old oaks. Many campsites at Falls Reserve’s three campgrounds feature fire pits, picnic tables, and electrical, hydro, and water hookups with sewer access. Campers can pay for a day use pass at Fall Reserve’s entryway gate autopay box, or get a park membership pass for visiting any time of year.

Goderich Lighthouse

Guiding ships to safety since 1847, Goderich Lighthouse has a unique square shape that beckons visitors and locals alike to picnic and view stunning sunsets from 100 steps high. Hikers will enjoy Viewpoint Trail, culminating in a collection of original, historical cottages. Camping near the lighthouse includes glamping options close to Maitland River and Lake Huron’s shores.

When to go

Camping season around Goderich begins in May with Victoria Day and runs to October. Summer months are a popular time for camping and outdoor recreation, with average temperatures topping out at 24°C. With days stretching longer into nights, staying during summer also means the area’s notable sunsets are visible longer. For smaller crowds and cooler temps, plan to visit in spring or fall.
