Hi!  Welcome to Custer Family Glamping!  We are so glad you are here ;)
Our 10-acre property is located in Custer, WA in the Northwest corner of Whatcom County.  Custer is an easy 20-minute drive to Bellingham, 10-15 minutes to 2 coastal beaches (Birch Bay and Semiahmoo), and only 10 minutes to Blaine and the Canadian border.  
We love to host our friends and show people around our beautiful slice of the PNW🌲

We are a big family, so we designed all of our glamping sites to be kid and pet friendly and big enough to fit families of 2-6.  A little luxury and ease for the grownups and a magical nature experience for the kids.  Kids are allowed to "just be" here.  Cellular reception isn't great but no one seems to notice.  Not when they are busy building forts, roasting marshmallows and climbing up tree houses.  

The intention infused into all of our spaces is a Hygge* (pronounced hoo-gah) vibe.  *Hygge is a calm, comfortable time with people you love.  The absence of frustrations; often enjoyed with warm drinks, cozy blankets and candlelight or a fire.❤️

County Noise Statement: We love living in rural Whatcom County and we know land owners in our area love it too. In fact, their enthusiasm for the great outdoors is so high that sometimes they can generate sounds that will travel throughout the day. These are likely sounds you are not accustomed to hearing in a traditional neighborhood.

Distant noises such as:
-county shooting range located a few miles away
-tractors
-mowers & chainsaws
-ATV vehicles
-barking dogs
-farm animals (goat, horses, crowing roosters)
-wild animals (early morning bird song and owls at night)
-children laughing
-adult voices
-train horn

Evenings are generally very quiet and peaceful as night falls with the exception of holiday weekends as the enthusiasm for owning property in the country may ramp up ;) We tell you all this in order to be fully transparent about noise potential.  If the potential for noise and the nearby shooting range will be a damper on your glamping experience, no worries! We totally get it! Our place is probably not the best fit. If you want to bring your kids to a place where they can build a fort, take a break from their screens and build family memories over a campfire, then you will love it here! And we look forward to seeing you soon.

Campers (glampers) have access to this quaint little outhouse with a composting toilet and sink (foot pump water).  

Our "room" was tidy and cozy when we arrived.

Incredibly comfortable bed that was perfectly warm on a cold spring night. The bunk bed cot was also perfect for my two little boys.

Our 33+ acre, picturesque, tranquil property is situated in the Tamihi Recreational Area just south of Chilliwack, British Columbia.  Three sides of the property are heavily forested with the Chilliwack River bordering the fourth side.  It's only 20 minutes from town but far enough to enjoy the peaceful and serene offerings of nature.  The property has a 20 x 60' covered picnic area, a large beach suitable for swimming in summer and fall, and it is also a world-class fishing spot.  It has unlimited mountain trails and logging roads for ATVs, mountain bikers/hikers and with Class I - IV rapids, is also a fantastic area for whitewater kayaking and rafting.  The national kayaking team trains just up from us and Chilliwack River Rafting is very close by.  We occasionally host weddings in the meadow and covered picnic area as well. 

Your QUIET, well-mannered, leashed (at all times) pet is welcome as long as you pick up after them.

There is a minimum of 3 nights on long weekends.

Children MUST be accompanied by a parent at all times!  We are in a very sensitive, natural environment & want it left exactly as you found it so it can be enjoyed by others.  We've unfortunately had children cutting down small trees, ripping moss & bark off of trees & damaging playground equipment.  

For some reason Hipcamp doesn't show my individual sites, so I will list them here. Some say Adults only (a minimum of 19 yrs)due to sharp drop offs to the river and undercut banks that would be unsafe for children.

SITES:

Site 21.  Adult only site (19+)  17'W x 63'L with a wider portion at the end and some to one side.  (measurements of that to follow)  Private, with gorgeous wide open  view of the river, Pairs well with site 45 and 21.

Site 23. .Adult only site (19+) 66'L x 12'W  but the end 23' is 27' wide and a wing to one side.  (abt 13 x 17')  Private, and nice view of the river, Pairs well with site 45 and 21.

Site 25 Across the road from the river, but still with a river view.  37 W' x 32'D

Site 26. Across  the road from river with view, 20'D x 31'W + an extra 9' W x 15'L strip across the front. 

Site 27.   Quite private, but connects with Site 28.  38'W x 52'L

Site L1. Adults only (19+)  This site has a beautiful full view of the river.  39'D x 23'W connects with L2 on the left and; 48 on the right.

Site L2.  Adults only (19+)  Beautiful river view!  Connects with L1 on the right.  39'D x 20'W.

Site L4.  Adults only (19+)  Private site with full river view.  30’L x 35’W Best for under 25' due to a narrow entrance.

Site L6.  Some river view through the trees.  Semi-circle, 28’D x 42’W  Fairly private, but visible to L6.  This site is suitable for smaller units (under 20').

Site C2.  Only 2 campsites on this road, so it's very quiet and private but it adjoins Site C1.   33’ D x 30’W plus 9’ x 21’.

We have a couple of our power sites also listed on Hipcamp under a different listing as well as one of our group sites that had to have it's own listing as well.

Get close to nature on a 40 acre farm homesteaded in 1929 by Pauline and Earnest Weatherby, who raised their 2 children and 40 foster kids.  Located 6 miles from the Canadian border, Mt. Vedder horse trail is 3 miles away, Nooksack Falls and Mt. Baker are 22 miles, and Silver Lake Park with swimming, fishing and boating is 7 miles away.  A Nucanoe and 2 electric bikes  are available, see details.  Dog supplies, eggs, homemade jellies/jams/dried fruit and seasonal produce available to purchase. There's a big dog park, large undulating meadows, and lots of woods and wildlife.  Tent and RV camping. WiFi and water available at the dog park.  Chickens and ducks, a vegetable garden, flower gardens, and fruit trees on site.  We can provide insight into small sustainable farming, fruit processing, and seasonal canning.  Your hosts are Rich and Kathleen and our 5 labs and 2 cats. Come and enjoy a beautiful and serene setting.

June Bud Farms

June Bud Farms was established in 1960s.  Blending two single parents, each with 4 kids. While June & Bud raised 8 kids, they collected Registered Holsteins for their quaint dairy. As the Dairy grew to 110 acers home to 120 heifers', they soon had to add an additional milking parlor. From milking 4 cows to a staggering 12 at once, Bud made the paper for the cutting edge technology! As time marches on, the kids all grown, the little farm retired. Fast forward to 2020, its time to breath new life into this stout and sturdy barn. Cows are not in the current foreseeable future, but flowers are. We will carry on the name of Grandma June and Grandpa Bud. The play on the names is still quite fitting, and June Bud Farms continues to live on.

Hayward Farms

We have a 7 acre developing hobby farm currently with fruit trees, a garden, some chickens,  a shepherd named Jack and a few cats. Our property backs onto Hayward Lake which is great for paddle boarding, kayaking and swimming. There are hiking trails to Ruskin Dam and around Hayward Lake. You can also enjoy fishing/floating across the street at the Stave River.

You can also take a short drive (5 minutes) over the Ruskin Dam where there is a parking lot and a well groomed trail which takes you to a sandy beach area…perfect for children.  Just be sure to get there early to secure a spot. 

Rolley Lake is also nearby…about a 10 minute drive, which is also great for having a picnic, canoeing, kayaking and paddle boarding.  It has a large designated swimming area too. 

A little further, at the North end of Hayward Lake is Hayward Park.  This is another perfect picnic area with a large sandy beach area and designated swimming area. There are change rooms, showers and bathrooms. Lifeguards are on duty. Please get there early to get a spot. 

2 km down Hayward Street, headed south, is a Starbucks as well as a few gas stations, Subway, Triple O’s and a Beer and Wine Store.  Mission City is a 10 minute drive from our property. 

Please note that the trails to the lake from our property are not OUR trails and we are not responsible for grooming them.  They are in fairly good condition and is a forest hike.  The hike to the lake is about a 5 minute walk. There is one steep section so please make sure you wear proper footwear.  The water access is from the shore. There is no beach at this location. You simply access the lake and either swim or relax on your floatation devices.  

Our driveway is a narrow, winding, uphill, gravel driveway that is 3/4 km long. It does have a few potholes (which we maintain annually).  There are a few hairpin corners which can make it difficult for inexperienced drivers and for larger vehicles.  Four-wheel drive is recommended, but not necessary. Take the corners wide and avoid cutting the corners too tightly.  Avoid stopping on the driveway and just go slow and steady. 

We have 7 campsites to choose from, we hope that you enjoy your stay!

Site 1 - Is located on one of the deep, hairpin corners of the driveway.  This is a future glamp site location.  This site faces the Stave River (west) where you have gorgeous sunsets.

Site 2 - Is located above Site 1 at the next hairpin corner of the driveway (about 300 feet away), also facing west.  This is also a future glamp site location. 

PLEASE NOTE THAT SITES 1 AND 2 ARE JUST OFF OUR DRIVEWAY, SO PLEASE EXPECT SOME MINOR TRAFFIC. THESE SITES HAVE A ROUGH TOILET SYSTEM - 5 GALLON BUCKET WITH WOOD SHAVINGS AND SNAP ON TOILET LID.  PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN TOILET PAPER.

Site 3 - Our WEE LITTLE CAMPSITE.  This is our smallest campsite.  It too is located on our driveway; just adjacent to the driveway.  Late spring and early fall you get beautiful sunsets.  This site is good for 2 adults only (NO KIDS).  It is located just above a large downhill slope. It too has a Rough toilet system / compost toilet. Again, because it is on our driveway please expect some occasional traffic passing by.  We can make arrangements for you to park your vehicle elsewhere if you find the site is too tight…just send us a message. 

Site 4 - Is a field site located at the top of the driveway, immediately to the right. This is currently our largest campsite.  It is a good spot for larger groups.  Has a compost toilet as indicated above. Again - bring your own toilet paper.

Site 5 - Is located at the top of the property behind the stables. It shares a pit toilet with Site 6 which is nearby. Please bring your own toilet paper.  Sites 5 and 6 are perfect to book together if you have a larger group. 

Site 6 - Is located at the top of the property, behind the stables.  It shares a pit toilet with site 5, which is nearby.  BRING YOUR OWN TOILET PAPER.  These two campsites are perfect for larger groups.  These two campsites are closest to the trail that leads to the lake.  Please note that the trail is not our property and belongs to BC Hydro.  Some of our other campers may be walking through to access the trail.  

Note that sites 4, 5 and 6 are in proximity to our neighbours house, however there are a number of trees that do block the view to the neighbours house. 

OVERFLOW SITE - This site is reserved typically for campers with small children as it is located in our fenced in yard.  No pets are allowed in this area.  This has a compost toilet so please bring your own toilet paper.

Note that we get our water from our shallow well. This well typically runs dry in the summer months, so we do not have drinking water available. We do have non-drinking water available at the house which is good for washing dishes if needed.  However it is best that you bring your own drinking water.  We do have plans for a more permanent water system in the future. 

Given that we are a small hobby farm we do have some chickens and a rooster.  The neighbours also have a rooster so do expect to hear them early in the morning…this is part of the camping experience.  We are also about 5 km from the train tracks and you will hear the trains occasionally at night. 

 Note that we do not allow smoking on our property simply to avoid the possibility of a forest fire. 

We do have two sit-on kayaks to rent if interested.
