A quiet, relaxed, riverside campsite with acres of Carmarthenshire countryside to explore

Spacious pitches in a grassy meadow surrounded by green fields full of sheep – that’s the lie of the land at Glynmarch Farm. This Carmarthenshire campsite adds campfires, wild swimming and barn table tennis into the deal too. It’s the epitome of a rural idyll for those who enjoy camping on the wilder side. It’s back to basics but well thought out and well looked after. Friendly host, Simon and his family invite campers to pitch up in their two-acre meadow but allow access to a further 10 – including a stretch on the river.

There are just 15 pitches here, each reached along mown pathways through a gently sloping meadow. Campers share one composting loo, one flushing toilet, and a hot water shower that’s roofless for views of the sky. If, at any point, you do need to get undercover though, you can always head for the barn. There, you’ll find entertainment in the form of table tennis as well as a handy facility by way of a communal fridge-freezer. Mostly, though, campers are encouraged to enjoy the outdoors and especially the river where you can picnic, have a campfire or even plunge in for a dip.

Glynmarch Farm feels far from anywhere but it’s on the edge of a rural community and there are two pubs less than a mile away. The edge of Brechfa Forest is a couple further at Abergorlech where there are enchanting walks on wooded river banks as well as mountain bike routes for those who want to go deeper and faster into the trees. The Dinefwr Estate is a popular place to visit and not far from the adventure of the Brecon Beacons which rise up about 10 miles away. For a day at the seaside, it’s further: the Welsh coast is about an hour in the car. Driving through the lush scenery of this part of Wales (all rolling hills, forests and babbling brooks) is not exactly a chore but with that in mind, you might find yourself not want to leave it at all.

We are a Freedom Camping Club site (free membership) with 15 tent pitches set in the beautiful Carmarthenshire countryside near the village of Llansawel. The site itself is around 2 acres, with parts mown and parts sown with hay meadow flowers. Beyond the campsite we have a further 12 acres for campers to explore, and this includes a stretch of both banks of the Afon Marlais where we encourage riverside fires and picnics or even a bracing dip in one of the deeper pools. Our aim is to provide a relaxing and peaceful environment in which to unwind and be immersed in this lovely part of rural Wales. We have grazing sheep on some of the land, and walks directly from the farm that give magnificent views of the Brecon Beacons and the Cambrian Mountains, all of which help to provide campers with a varied flavour of this part of South West Wales. We keep facilities simple; two toilets (one composting, one flushing), hot shower, a washing up sink, and also a covered barn space with table tennis and other games for children. For evenings off from cooking, or just for a nice pint, there are two local pubs under a mile from the campsite where guests can get great pub food and a warm welcome seven days a week. We are around 30-50 minutes by car from many attractions including Dinefwr Castle, Carreg Cennin Castle, Llyn Brianne, The National Botanic Gardens of Wales and some beautiful nearby coast at Aberaeron and Newquay to the West, and Laugharne and Tenby to the South West.

Glynmarch Farm Camping
Overall was okay. Facilities were simple but clean enough except for the thousands of bugs that seemed to like the flushable toilet. Weather was up and down, unfortunately came just as a storm was forecast. Not the easiest to get to/not the smoothest of drives but survived it. Host was friendly but unfortunately made myself feel a little uncomfortable.

Camping night !
had an amazing stay at Simon’s camp! Simon is a wonderful host—he went above and beyond by helping us fill up our airbed and even guided us to a beautiful nearby river. The directions to the camp were straightforward, and the pitch itself was well-maintained, featuring a hot shower, neat toilets, a washbasin, and a sink. The amenities made our stay very comfortable, and the natural surroundings added to the memorable experience. I highly recommend staying here for a peaceful and relaxing getaway.

Nearby attractions

There are 12 acres of Carmarthenshire countryside which you are welcome to explore within Glynmarch Farm – including the banks of the River Marlais. You are welcome to picnic or have a fire by the river and can even wild swim in some of the deeper parts. You can head out on walks into woodland and countryside directly from the campsite or head two miles to the edge of Brechfa Forest where there are walking and mountain bike trails. National Trust membership comes in handy here as there are two estates nearby managed by the trust. Dolaucothi is six miles from site, with woodland walks and a Roman gold mine, and Dinefwr is 12 miles away where there’s a historic house, a deer park and a 12th-century castle. The National Botanic Gardens of Wales are 18 miles away. You can reach the north western edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park in a drive of about 20 minutes and the west coast at New Quay within an hour.

Food and drink

There are two pubs less than a mile away in the village of Llansawel: The Angel Inn and The Black Lion. Both serve food and are recommended. If your stay happens to coincide with the first or third Saturday of the month, you can pick up local produce at the farmer’s market held outside the village hall. Otherwise, the closest place with a shop is the village of Talley, four miles from site. For more choice, head to Llandeilo (10 miles). Another recommended pub is another Black Lion, this one in Abergorlech. It has a lovely setting close to walks along a river in woodland.
