Private Paradise
Nice dog friendly spot to camp if you don’t want to go to the holiday park. It’s a private spot close to the Murray to Mountain rail trail. Would definitely be back again and spend a few more days there.

Wombat Flats
A great looking site but not tranquil.
Mike prepared the site well by mowing it before we came which no doubt helped to keep the snakes away (there are both browns and red bellies on the property). He was also very accomodating with having a camp fire and allowing the collection of firewood on his property and the billabong was very scenic. However, while the trains (10 on the first day - I stopped counting after that) are a nuisance, the main road which is just on the other side of the billabong seemed to have constant traffic and trucks especially in the evening.

We had a wonderful time camping on Mike’s land. We set up next to a billabong and were amazed at all the birdlife. We enjoyed being the only people there and found it so relaxing and beautiful. It is only a short distance from Wangaratta city centre but felt so far away from everything. Very close to rail and bike trails and we cycled deserted back roads to get into town. You will need to take everything with you, including toilet, we also took our own water. Mike was a very helpful host and very welcoming.

Camp next to a billabong
Wombat Flats is a great spot to camp in the middle of no where, right next to the main railway line (approx 800m). There was only half a dozen trains and they where a welcome brief interruption to a beautiful tranquil spot.
Mike has an organics fruit and vegi stall to add to the occasion. My curry featured his vegetables and I snacked on his watermelon.
I went for a swim in the billabong. The bottom is clay and it is shallow. I sort of slid into the water.
Great spot, and a great stay!.

We loved camping here. It was peaceful and private and Mike was a great host. There are trains close by but it didn’t bother us. Wangaratta is close if you want to visit or need supplies and plenty to see and do all around. Will be back.

Such a beautiful place! We stayed 2 nights overlooking the billabong. Such a peaceful place yet amazingly only 5mins from Wangaratta so super convenient location as a base for exploring surrounds. Arrival directions were very clear. The afternoon sun reflecting over the water / through the gum trees is such a sight!
